I met Jason (and his adorable Boston Terrier, Sophia) on a beautiful Saturday morning in Byron Bay, Australia. After being a fan, and following his work for many months, I was excited for the opportunity to meet IRL for coffee and talk all things design and career. After chatting for an hour and joking about making our own podcast one day, I knew Jason was someone that you all needed to meet too.

After chatting for an hour and joking about making our own podcast one day, I knew Jason was someone that you all needed to meet too.
One of the many things I love about Jason is how multi-faceted he is. He’s not afraid of a challenge. to have his hands in a little bit of everything. In a world that is constantly telling you to focus on one or two things, Jason is breaking barriers and becoming a master of them all. Not only that, his laid back and good vibes make it easy for him to become one of those instant friends - right from the moment you meet.

What’s a typical day look like for you? No one day is ever really the same but lucky I love variety.
What keeps you inspired? I’m always inspired by nature. The bush, the beach and the ocean. We are spoiled here in Australia.. the light here is magic. I love to learn and I’m always researching something. I’m also always inspired by creators and artists, often friends, who make things with their hands.
What is your style philosophy? Style comes from within and with confidence. The best way to learn is by doing. Comparison is never a good headspace. Try to not limit yourself.
What song is a “must” for a road trip playlist? “70s Roadtrip” on Spotify is the best! Generally, fun upbeat music is my vibe but I often don’t like being the DJ (in charge of the music) because I love listening to other people’s music.
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? I was born in Launceston (Tasmania) and grew up in Melbourne, but my career “blew up” when I lived in Bondi Beach in Sydney.
Favorite thing to do when you visit California? I love LA (and Palm Springs too!)
I have always felt at home in LA; the people, the vibe, the energy.. and I really love an America accent. It’s one of my most favourite places to visit and I have thought long and hard about living there one day (hoping my future husband-to-be will be from there maybe)
When in town I love to visit friends (I have a heap of local friends and also ex pat Aussies living in LA), go for a hike - I love the view from Griffith observatory. Of course, a little shopping (mostly vintage)
I also love the many different types of architecture in Los Angeles. I love walking the streets in certain neighbourhoods and looking at the buildings (I do this where ever I go).

What’s next for you? I have a few things happening this year 10 new paint colours to my signature paint collection with Murobond Paints, some new additions to my encaustic tile collection with Dilorenzo Tiles plus 2 exciting projects that I can’t say just yet.

What’s your name? My name is Marte and my husband is Jed, we have Ellida 4 years old and Embla 2 years old.
Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself! I am originally from Norway but I moved to Australia 11 years ago. I met Jed back home in Norway and when his visa ran out I decided to come to Australia with him for a year and here we are a decade later. We are now married with kids and living a life we dreamt up, travelling the country and spending everyday together.
What’s a typical day look like for you? A typical day for us would be a hard thing to describe as we are always somewhere new and our flow adapts to each new place. Generally we like to park up near beaches and stay places that are warm. In Australia we are pretty lucky to have places that are warm all year around. So a most typical day would involve some time for Jed to surf in the morning, followed by some time for me to do my Yoga Practice and then we would go to the beach or if I am doing some work Jed will take the girls for a play somewhere.
The bus is really affected by the outside temp so it still gets cold in the evenings. That’s when you’ll find us snuggled up at home, cooking dinner and lighting the fireplace.
When did you first get your home on wheels? We bought Lloyd the bus 2.5 years ago when we just had Embla our second daughter, but it took us 18 months to convert it into a house on wheels so we are nearly up to a year living on the road now.
What was the build-out like and how long did it take? Any difficult challenges you faced? It was the hardest thing we have ever done. We just had our second baby and Jed was working full time as well as fitting out the bus. We didn’t expect it to take so long but we learnt a few life lessons along the way. Having said that it was the best thing we have ever done for our family! We have to pinch ourselves sometimes that we are actually living this life now after all that hard work.
What’s your favorite part of your home? That it moves! And that it feels different and fresh at every new location. We also definitely love the little bath we put in for the girls. They use it every night and its always nice to have some solid routines and comforts for the girls when we travel so much. But my absolute favourite part must be our windows and the ever changing views they provide.
Where to next? Right now we are just hanging in Byron Bay for a couple of months and from there we have no plans. We never really do. It seems life takes us to where we are meant to be at the moment and we feel comfortable trusting that. Once the boarders open to Queensland I can see us moving closer to the tropics for a little while but we are open to anything.
Best advice or tip for those wanting to choose #vanlife? My husband always says “Don’t wait for a life changing event to change your life”.
We sold everything we owned, cars, house, stuff and built our home from scratch. Jed left a well paying full time job. We took the risks and made the commitment. It might feel scary to begin with but it will be well worth it. Don’t wait for something awful to happen to push you into that decision. You deserve to live your dream life no matter what your current life is like. Make the leap.
What is the most difficult challenge you’ve faced living in your van or on the road? When the lock down happened we were travelling Tasmania and because we were no longer allowed to travel in our motor home we isolated ourselves with 3 other bus families on an amazing property at the far south of Tasmania. It was an experience for life and beautiful friendships and memories were formed but it was also incredibly hard. It was very remote and we didn’t have access to water. The weather turned when we were there also so it got very cold and our solar didn’t charge well. The uncertainty of what was happening with restrictions and no contingencies being made for people who live full time on the road was straining for a while. But then life guided us up to a sunny property in NSW and we were lucky enough to spend the rest of lock down there.
What song is a “must” for the road trip playlist? A song that means a lot to us and resonates with our life philosophy is ‘Society’ by Eddie Vedder and if you haven’t seen the movie in which this soundtrack is from I highly recommend it. Into the Wild.
What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling? There are so many but one of my favourites are from the beginning of our journey and it is so simple yet one of my favourite memories. We had just pulled over to a free camp right by the ocean after spending a few weeks in a warm beachy place on the West coast of Australia. The weather turned and it got really cold all of a sudden while I was cooking dinner outside. It was super late so we really just wanted to get dinner done and put the kids to bed but nothing was working out. Then we decided to just embrace the chaos so we lit the fire for the first time in weeks and set up a pretend Italian restaurant inside. We played Italian music, ate spaghetti by the fire and watched the storm roll in over the ocean. Sometimes life is really just what you make it.

When I first moved to Australia, I took a few months to drive around and explore the country. Along the way, I met so many amazing people - some who lived permanently in their vans - and some who utilize their little home on wheels for road trips and extended holidays. Regardless, all these people had one thing in common: a passion for adventure.

When I first moved to Australia, I took a few months to drive around and explore the country. I had rented a 4x4 SUV and converted it into something I could easily camp in while on the road. Along the way, I met so many amazing people - some who lived permanently in their vans - and some who utilize their little home on wheels for road trips and extended holidays. Regardless, all these people had one thing in common: a passion for adventure. I became obsessed with spending nights by the campfire, hearing about their journeys and I knew I needed to bring heir stories to all of you.

What’s your name? Hi I’m Charlotte
How old are you? 29
What’s your occupation? I work in Financial Crime. My job has always been pretty niche but one that’s attracting a lot of attention at the moment in large financial institutions. I spent the last 6 years working in large corporations within various anti-money laundering teams to help protect clients and businesses from fraud, bribery, corruption, money laundering and terrorism financing.
I also do a little bit of blogging / collaborations with brands as a little side hustle.
Where are you from? I’m from England. I grew up in a little surf town in Cornwall. I then moved to a city called Bristol to study a Law. Once I finished University, I moved to London for five years.
I then moved over to Australia about 1.5yrs ago and loving every minute of it!
When did you first get your home on wheels? We bought our van a little over a year ago. How we came about buying the van is a story that I’ll never forget! I’d been talking about buying one to use at weekend for surf trips to my partner Harry for a very long time. I'd given up talking about it, then one day - out the blue, I came home to find our little van sitting in our driveway! He’d completely surprised me by finding one and bringing it home. It was the sweetest surprise - I cried happy tears for hours haha.
What was the build-out like and how long did it take? Any difficult challenges you faced? We actually bought our van fully renovated. It came with everything so we could literally take it on a road trip the next day, however we’ve had to update a few things along the way and it’s had a little mechanical makeover during the time we've had it. We’re actually contemplating upgrading to a slightly bigger one soon that we can build one out ourselves. My partner Harry is 6ft3 and he's just a tad too long for ours when lying in bed haha (although he never complained having to put his feet in a cupboard every night when we lived on the road for 3 months).
What’s your favorite part of your home? I love the bamboo ceiling which runs through the whole van and I love, love our little cooker that pulls out from the boot. Cooking out the back whilst watching the sunset over the ocean is the best feeling in the world.
Where to next?I We’re back in Sydney for the time being, working and being around friends which feels nice. We are planning to do another big trip along the West Coast at some point in the van. Perhaps for a 6 months - 1 year next time.
Best advice or tip for those wanting to choose #vanlife? Van life is my absolute favourite way of living however it isn't always (if at all) the most glamorous way to live. Sometimes there's limited access to amenities (showers, toilets etc.) and it can get very hot or cold inside the van depending on the seasons. So I'd recommend hiring a van first and doing a trip for a week or so to see if you enjoy the lifestyle before fully committing.
I'd also recommend:
Downloading camping apps such a Camperman and Wikicamps to find free camp spots.
Chatting to locals to find out the best, hidden places to explore.
Investing in a bug / fly net for the doors and windows - those mozzies are little buggers!
What is the most difficult challenge you’ve faced living in your van or on the road? You’re obviously living in such a tiny space for a long period of time with another person, therefore it's super important to be mindful of whoever you are travelling with. Van life can really intensify feelings and it can take some time to adjust but once you get into the flow of the slow life - it's truly the best feeling ever!
What song is a “must” for the road trip playlist? Oh we have so many (we’ve done some very, very long drives and created very, very long playlists) but my favs at the moment are:
How do people find you/connect? (social media/website/etc) Either through social media or in person! We’ve connected with so many others living the vanlife on our journey and made some very lovely friends, whether it’s via social media or camping next to them!

Made right in sunny Los Angeles, Owner Kristi started the line when the need to make others feel beautiful was a calling she could no longer run from.
After losing her mother to cancer in 2008, Kristi knew she had to do something to help women in the most vulnerable of moments feel more comfortable and beautiful than ever. A vintage inspired brand made up of romantic robes and delicates, Love Ophelia is the perfect thing to help women embrace their beauty and shine. Whether it be in the moments leading up to becoming a mother (they just launched a gorgeous new maternity line) or the moments leading up to being a bride, Love Ophelia has you covered.
Their goal is to make customers comfortable and gorgeous while providing every extra detail you can imagine in the process. With their collections made just a few miles from their office, they can stop in it at moment’s notice. This allows them to oversee production with a hands-on approach and know their manufacturers by name. That might not sound like it makes a difference, but with an enthusiastic staff and manufactures that feel heard and appreciated, it ensures each stitch is made with love. All in an effort to make customers feel their best.
There are a lot of exciting things happening for Love Ophelia right now. The just launched their own line of dresses and a new collection in their sleep wear. Not to mention a rebrand of their site which gives us some serious photo envy. You may have seen them on ABC’s The Bachelor at 20 with Jade Roper and her girl squad or The Bachelor Wedding with Catherine Lowe and her bridesmaids. Or perhaps on former Bachelorettes Ashley Rosenbaum and Emily Maynard. Or maybe you caught a peak of them on The Today Show or in Brides Magazine. But no matter the place you may have seen them, we’re here to tell you now, Love Ophelia is a brand you want to get on board with. Love Ophelia is “committed to a compassionate lifestyle, surrounding ourselves with beauty, and spreading love”. We were lucky enough to chat with owner and resident girl boss Kristi and get an insiders look at Love Ophelia.
Was there a defining moment that inspired you to create Love Ophelia?
I lost my Mom to Breast Cancer in 2008. At the time, my first son was just 8 months old. I had a career that sometimes required me to work 60 hours per week. I did some soul searching and realized just how precious this life is and how much I wanted to spent that precious time with my littlest love. Seeing what my mom went through physically and emotionally, I decided I wanted to create something that made women feel beautiful, despite their circumstance. It was then that Love Ophelia came to be.
What keeps you inspired?
Sleep. Seriously, I love to sleep, and lounge. Ha! I say “sleep” because I have a second baby now and realize just how important sleep can be! But in all seriousness, I am truly inspired by the strength of others. I once read a news story of a bride with terminal cancer. She had just months to live and wanted to bump up her wedding date so she could marry her love. I was so moved by her story that I sent her a robe for her wedding day that very day. I am inspired by that kind of strength, that beauty, that love. That kind of love that endures through adversity is truly inspiring.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
I would say, “Don’t doubt yourself, listen to your gut, cease opportunities. Oh, and in a few years, don’t judge that cute guy just because he is a single man driving a hunter green minivan. He is “the one.”
What do you love most about California?
Although I don’t go quite often enough, I love the fact that the ocean is just down the street. I can head down there, watch the surf, and just figure “stuff” out.
Favorite Sunday Brunch Spot? Why?
I love the Four Daughter in Manhattan Beach. Our family has been going there for a long time. It’s a small, family owned little spot along the coast of Southern California. It’s got such a warm, beach community vibe and is a perfect spot to take our kids. And, the food is great!
Favorite product from Love Ophelia? Why?
I love our Serendipity Robe. It’s our biggest seller and is, in my opinion, the perfect balance of cozy and pretty.
What do you love most about your job?
I love that I get to inspire other people to follow their dreams. I love helping a stressed out bride remember to just relax and drink in the moment. I love to be creative and I love the fact that I can say, yep, we are made in the USA…right here in Los Angeles!
What’s your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of every day is when I am hit out of nowhere with a little love tap from the universe. When I hear that little voice inside that says, “Yes, this is good. Life is good.” It’s so important to allow ourselves to just be happy in a moment, big or small.
What’s your dream CA vacation?
There is something so incredible about Big Sur. Two years ago my husband and I were driving up the coast on our way to Big Sur when we were involved in a car accident. It could have ended up really bad but we walked away with a crushed car, but otherwise unscathed. Instead of cancelling our trip, we rented a car and continued on to Big Sur. It was the best decision to go on in spite of the setback. Big Sur is incredibly healing and magical. I am so grateful for having had this experience and our decision to push through. It was a sweet reminder to continue on, despite your setbacks because something beautiful awaits!

THE SAN FRANCISCO FERRY BUILDING
I jump off the muni at the Embarcadero Metro Station and with a short walk I can get to the area on the Embarcadero I need to be. Once I reach the foot of Market Street, the magnificent 245- foot tall clock tower on top of a waterfront building, marks I have arrived to one of my favorite destinations, the historic San Francisco Ferry Building.
THE SAN FRANCISCO FERRY BUILDING
Return visits “home” to San Francisco instantly evoke excitement to my core. It is early Saturday morning, 6:37am to be exact and I am just pulling up to my parent’s house from Los Angeles. In typical Dad fashion, I see he has been up waiting for my arrival. After an exchange of greetings, he starts advising me to save my city plans for another day so I can get caught up on sleep. However, even after a long night of non-stop travel, operating with very little sleep, I am too excited for my planned day in San Francisco, that I am not willing to sacrifice it for sleep.
I arrive at King Station, just across from AT&T Park which marks the kickoff for my day. The sun is on the rise, and with not a cloud in the sky I can tell it is going to be a beautiful day in the city. As I head to the machine to purchase my ticket, I notice for a Saturday morning the station feels quieter than I can remember. With a little wait, I jump on the Muni Redline, grab a window seat, and sit back for the 22-minute ride. It is just enough time for me to catnap, daydream and express gratitude before I arrive to my desired stop. It is in this moment that I am grateful for how accessible public transportation is in San Francisco. Not having to sit in a car again after last night’s road trip is a gift!

Once I reach the foot of Market Street, the magnificent 245- foot tall clock tower on top of a waterfront building marks my arrival to one of my favorite destinations, the historic San Francisco Ferry Building. The iconic clock tower is “a famous city’s most famous landmark” (Caen) and stands as a dual representation of measurement; one of past time, history, and accomplished journeys; the other of present time, new connections, and aspiring adventures.
Once I step inside the Ferry Building, I feel the undeniable connection this place has to the heart and soul of this city. Originally, served as San Francisco’s only focal point for transportation, this hub was the only place where commuters and travelers could access the city, unless traveling from the Peninsula. Much like Carl Nolte observed, I have a similar feeling that, “Adventures began and ended...here”.
Now, way more than just transportation hub, the Ferry Building’s renovated Marketplace and weekly CUESA Farmers Market on Tuesday and Saturday, have made this a premiere destination for locals, foodies and travelers alike. Home to some of the finest farmers, food purveyors and restaurants it is “a testament to how much the Northern California’s culinary landscape has changed…” (Wall Street Journal). It has become much larger than the local culture, its lasting impact has been defined, and the Bay Area has changed how America eats.
As I walk through the Ferry Building, I can’t help but want to embark on a new journey for my time spent there; a celebration of all things food and San Francisco. As I take my time walking from shop to shop, the slower pace is allowing me to truly enjoy the organic artisan cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery, the well-cured meats from Buccalone, the warm bread from Acme, and the freshly shucked oysters from Hog Island Oyster Company. When I finally make my way down the long corridor, with very little stomach room to spare, I venture outside to the waterfront farmers market, where the stands of vendors seem endless. Having to stroll at a quicker pace because of time, I find myself stopping too frequently to sample the variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Finally reaching the end to my loop, I make a final stop to buy fresh flowers for my parents. It is the street cello player next to me that signals the perfect end to my journey at the San Francisco Ferry Building.

Amber and Kayla here of Dulcet Creative! We are here today excited to teach you a few simple styling tips that we’ve learned this year that we hope will help you with styling your images. Styling is a tool with unlimited possibilities. If you’re a business you can use these tips to help you create a cohesive visual presence and help people to get to know you and your products better. If this is your first time souping up a shot, this will guide you through. In time, you’ll get faster and more daring as your styling mind develops! The end result will be beautiful, creative photos that not only showcase YOU, but also provide attention-grabbing images to show off in blogs, social media, newsletters or anywhere you find a promotional photo op!
#1. Choose your colors:
Choose one or two colors to weave through your scene in order to keep a cohesive visual harmony throughout your image. Choose your colors according to the message you want to convey. If you’re looking to create a fun, summer look, then use pops of bold color here and there to make a statement and use neutral colors for a more mellow, understated look. While there are times when all white on white can be visually striking, it is also fun to look for backgrounds that create contrast. So a pale colored food and plate gets a dark background whereas a vibrantly colored dish tends to be best with a simple white background.
#2. Keep it fresh:
You will rarely ever see a scene that we’ve styled without some kind of fresh element like fruit or greenery. Adding those pops of flowers or plants will breathe life into your images.
#3. Liven things up
Get a few work-in-progress shots. Bringing hands into your scene will add a human element that makes things more personal and real.
#4. Create Balance
Start simple and add more props for complexity. Play around with different lines, varieties of dark and light colors, lights and shadows, and so on until you find what you like. Your main focus will be to balance the different elements in order to create a pleasing aesthetic to the eye while keeping everything consistent with your brand and products. Getting Started is the Hardest Part
You hear people say it often: “Getting started is the hardest part.” Whether it is in reference to a diet, working out, a project; we can mostly agree that getting started on anything that puts you out of your comfort zone is no easy task.
After going to school and starting our “grown up jobs”, we both felt this mutual desire for something more. We dreamed of a place where we could use our talents and our passions to their full capacities, a place where we felt as though we were working towards something bigger than ourselves… We dreamed of being a part of a creative community that would challenge and inspire us. We were searching for something that we could not find and our response to this was to create it for ourselves. After deciding on the name DULCET which is sometimes defined as sweet, we coined this dream life of ours as “the sweeter life”.
Today we are truly living “the sweeter life”. We have both quit our jobs to pursue DULCET full time and are thrilled to say that our careers reflect our passion for the first time in our lives. We are finally doing what we truly love. Like most good things though, it hasn’t come easy. We want to share with you a little bit about the trials and frustrations that we experienced in the beginning of our journey and equip you with some of our tips for success if you are in the process of starting your own.

Procrastination, perfectionism, insecurity, fear and apathy are just a few of the issues we had to face when launching our business. What began with wild excitement could have easily ended in devastation if we didn’t learn how to deal with these frustrating barriers to success.
We realized quickly that starting your own business is like volunteering to take a ride on an emotional rollercoaster. For every tinge of excitement you feel there is a load of fear of the unknown that drops on your head like an anvil. For every all-nighter we spent dreaming about the exciting possibilities ahead of us there was a day full of troubleshooting web coding and trying to translate what the tech support representative was explaining to us on the other line. We spent days questioning ourselves and were constantly questioned by others as we tried to put our vision into words and paint a picture for people about what it would look like when we were finished. We got crazy looks and responses like “well… I hope that works out for ya” with a questioning shrug. We were not always supported in our pursuit. Then throw in a dash of insecurity and an aptitude to constantly compare yourself to the incredible talent in the world around you and you are questioning your dream of making “the sweeter life” your reality in no time.
We say all this not to scare you straight but to give you a fair warning about what you are up against and to let you know that if you feeling a little worn out or lost in the chaos; you are not alone.
After months of brainstorming, idea mapping, planning and strategizing, we ultimately came to the conclusion that if we waited until we had every detail of our business figured out than we would never get started. So we gave the perfectionist side of our brains a break and we just jumped in full force before all of our ducks were in a row. Looking back now, that leap of faith we took was the absolute best decision we have made this far.
So now, one year in, we almost feel like we are past the starting line. We have sharpened many of our skills throughout this past year and have added a lot of new ones to our skillset. We survived the trying first few months and would love to share some things that we learned in the process!
If you are considering pursuing a new endeavor:
1. Don’t do it alone.
Accountability is key. Use a friend, spouse or loved one not only as a sounding board for your ideas but as an accountability partner that will hold you to your commitments and help you to follow through with your ideas.
We had each other to keep motivated and without that we know for a fact DULCET would not exist today. There is power in numbers, people!
2. Write it down.
The ideas, the lessons, the doubts, the concerns, the triumphs; document it.
The beginning, like we said, is a whirlwind of emotion filled with highs and lows. Writing was a great way for us to sort through the web of ideas and feelings that was bombarding our minds.
3. Simplify the dream.
If you are anything like us, you are the visionary type. We get a thrill off of BIG, unthinkable dreams but the thought of doing the tactical work required to bring the vision to life makes us shudder. Take as much time as you need to slowly break down the big goals into small, realistic daily tasks. Once you have simplified the dream, half the battle is won.
4. Don’t compare yourself.
It can be so hard not to compare what you are producing to someone who is more experienced, has a clearer vision, has more cohesive branding or a larger following than you. There is a constant temptation to compare and that will always exist unless you have found a way to overcome that completely (fill us in on how to accomplish this if you have mastered it!) but for goodness sakes at least give yourself a break when you are just starting out!!
5. Be Positive!
It sounds cheesy and so obvious but it is way easier than you think to get down on yourself and go negative. We can’t tell you how many times we exchanged text messages to each other that said something like:
“WE ARE AWESOME… WE GOT THIS… WE CAN’T LOSE!!”
It became our little joke to be overly dramatic about every minor triumph throughout the process but in the end, it became something that was so necessary for our success. We pumped each other up and spewed out pep talks as much as possible. It brought us closer and made the whole process so much more fun.

Amber and Kayla here of Dulcet Creative! We are thrilled and honored to be selected as the guest editors of Established California for the month of July!
It was one year ago this week that we launched our business Dulcet Creative. We had absolutely no idea what to expect or where it would lead us but looking back, we are so glad that we took the plunge into the great unknown because it has been one of the most memorable and rewarding journeys of our lives thus far!
We started Dulcet with the desire to promote and celebrate artists, inspired minds, creative entrepreneurs and small companies who we believe are truly doing BIG things. We have always had a natural desire to CREATE and over the years we have become deeply passionate about creating, capturing and sharing stories…. which is exactly what we get to do for our clients today! As visual storytellers, we work to help refresh our client’s brand image through photography, styling, set design and creative direction. We also run a blog where we share stories of people who inspire as well as snippets of our daily creative endeavors! This past year, our passions and our careers collided and ever since our lives have never been the same.

We love workshops. Not only do you get to learn new skills and explore new creative outlets; but you also get to network and meet new people. To us, being able to connect with like-minded individuals, while exploring something you are passionate about, is what this whole community is all about. So today, we are so excited to share with you this post with from Taryn Sutherland, owner of Twinkle & Toast , and a look at one of her Calligraphy workshops in San Diego, CA.
Last year I've started instructing introduction to modern calligraphy workshops and they've really taken off! Recently I teamed up with my friend Melissa at Pow Wow Design Studio who graciously hosted me for a fun Sunday afternoon. Jasmine from Let's Frolic Together kindly came on board to snap all the fun.
The workshops are three hours long and I include all materials: ink, nibs, paper, customized worksheets, and more. I keep them intimate, with no more than 12 attendees. I go into detail about the history, terminology and techniques of pointed pen calligraphy and allow for plenty of one-on-one time while practicing. Their supplies are theirs to take home in a tote bag from The Printed Palette (designed with my custom calligraphy, as a collaboration)
Not only do I like for them to learn a skill with great detail, but it's important that we all have a fun time while out! I brought in some delicious bites from Water's Catering, treats Sweet Lydia's (topped with cupcake toppers from The Roc Shop), and of course wine from One Hope Wine. My friend Sarah from L&S Design Co. knocked it out of the park with beautiful floral arrangements to compliment this rad space. It's been amazing to see a community come together (both the awesome attendees and the vendors) in a creative and positive learning environment. It's a space we can have fun, network and learn from one another and try something new.

We sat down with Priscilla, owner and designer, to talk a bit more about what keeps her inspired, her mantra and why she loves living in California.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I have been most inspired by the people who say I've helped or inspired them in some way, shape or form. It has really reaffirmed that I am on purpose & following my divine path.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
Being in alignment with my purpose aka doing what I Love for a living & using my gifts to create for the world everyday. It took me awhile to figure out, but I'm truly fed when I am being the Conscious Creator I was put on this Earth to be.
Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
Acknowledge what your gifts are & really take in what people tell you your amazing at, then keep doing whatever that is! Believe in yourself even when the naysayers seem louder than the supporters.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Oh man, a lot! But basically 5 key things:
1. Drive safe-(I've been in more accidents than I ever cared to have!)
2. Never be afraid to be fully yourself...you already are enough & you're perfect! Let your light shine.
3. Follow your heart & your inspiration & make every decision based from a place of love.
4. Your body is a temple & you only get one. Honor & respect yourself & your body.
5. You think you know...but you have NO idea!!! Don't worry about the future or the past. Just BE you...don't water yourself down or try to be like anyone else. Because the more you try to play small or be like someone else, the longer it'll take to find yourself.
What do you love most about California?
I love the ocean & the salty air! Living on the coast has been my life's dream. It is my sanctuary, my inspiration & my peaceful place.
What was the defining moment you knew you wanted to create Metta 8?
Having a successful yoga business named MettaYoga in Texas & finishing my BFA in Metals in 2011, I knew I wanted to create a line of jewelry For my thesis that embodied the energy & healing I had learned & found through my 10 years of teaching. I wanted to share this jewelry with the world & make pieces that were not only beautiful adornments but also powerful conduits to healing, manifesting, balancing, etc... These pieces are the anchor people can use to remind them of their own power as a spiritual being having a human experience.
What's on your current playlist?
Music plays a huge part in my creative process. Always in rotation are Jim James, My Morning Jacket & Andrew Bird. Recently I've been heavily into Ben Howard, Glass Animals, Wild Beasts & anything Justin Vernon has a hand in, he's brilliant. Along w/ Dr. Dog, Explosions in the Sky, Future Islands. And always in the cue is Miles Davis' Kind of Blue! The list goes on & on. I don't really get stuck on one thing for too long.
Current Mantra?

We think it's so special when we find artisans who use their hands to create beautiful and unique items. Add the fact that they are creating sustainable fashions that are eco-friendly and of course we have to share with you! We chatted with Elizabeth & Allen of Northwood Bentwood Rings to share a little bit more about their rings, their process and how they are different.
Tell us about your company and how you got started?
Northwood Bentwood Rings makes wooden rings from the bentwood technique. We are focused on using only eco-friendly and sustainable sources for our products, from the wood itself to the precious metals, and stone inlays that we use. Most recently we have branched out to include a mix of reclaimed gold or silver bands along with a wooden outer wrap.
We began in 2012, when my husband Allan presented me with my first wooden ring. We had been married 3 years and I hadn’t been able to wear a wedding band due to an allergy to gold. Having grown up on a farm called ‘Lot of Oaks’ the oak tree had always held a very special meaning for me. It was from Oak that my first ring was created, and I was in love with the uniqueness of my ring immediately. Allan, being the craftsman he is, didn’t stop there. He was in pursuit of the best wooden ring he could make, so I soon found myself with a whole lot of wooden wedding rings to choose from!
At the time we had been running a weekend coffee cart with freshly roasted coffee, another of our passions. Customers began coming for the rings as much as they did for the coffee and we saw a way to fill a need. We had heard so many stories of people not being able, or not wanting, to wear traditional jewelry, and we decided to close up the coffee cart and begin our adventure in serving this new crowd of people looking for something different.
What makes your company unique?
While wooden rings and the process of bentwood are unique in themselves, I think the most unique thing about our company is not what we do, but why we do it. We want to create a difference in our customers’ lives, our employees’ lives, and in our own. We have always strived to create not just the most beautiful rings, but also a community of artists and people with the same values. We believe that we can work together to create something different: A new way of living sustainably and showing our love for each other, and the environment, in a natural way.
That the jewelry trade that has been built on the backs of slave laborers and atrocious practices is becoming more and more well known, and I believe that it is up to us to stop the demand for these products. We believe there is a better way, and we know there are many others like us who believe in a future where these practices are stopped and where we know about how our products have come to be. We believe in transparency and in protecting the beautiful world, and its people, with safe, friendly practices.
We’re doing our best by creating the most beautiful product we can with friendly materials, and by providing a more unique and one-of-a-kind alternative that lovers and friends can use to express their feelings for their loved ones.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Allan and I have both had a lot of people throughout our lives that have inspired us, not least of which have been our customers and our employees, but to give a more straightforward answer:
For Allan, it has been the master craftsmen of the past. People like the metalsmiths who would spend days creating a simple weathervane that would be used on top of a barn roof, making sure every detail was perfect, and every curve was just as it should be even though it wouldn’t be viewed except from below. Their pride in their work was unwavering and always drove them to be at their best.
For myself, it was my grandfather. The man who built and cared for the farm that inspired our beginning. Before I was in school with my siblings I would spend the day with my grandfather while my mother went off to work. He was an inventor with a large workshop full of tools and I spent my days with him in that world of tools and tinkering. He would hand me my own blocks of wood, some nails and a hammer, and as a child I’d put together whatever came to me and let my imagination run wild. When we were done, we’d often walk through the acres of oak trees collecting acorns and leaves, and it was with him that I discovered my love for crafting and nature.
Where do you see your company heading in the future?
Right now we’re focused on bringing together and marrying the beauty of precious metals and wood in an equally sustainable way. We hear from a lot of our customers that while one partner would love a wooden band, the other leans more towards traditional jewelry and we believe we can make a bigger change by incorporating a sustainable alternative that would speak to them both. We understand that gold and silver jewelry has been a large part of the tradition of marriage in recent times, and we feel that we can work to source reclaimed materials to make this possible.
We are also working to bring together artists as employees, people with their own unique ideas and creative spirits who can help to bring our customers visions to life in their own way.

When I first discovered Local + Lejos their colorful approach had my attention immediately. Aside from the gorgeous patterns and vibrant colors, their mission left a lasting impression. Working directly with undiscovered artisans around the globe, each purchase of hand crafted goods provides an opportunity to create sustainable living. By supporting these artists, consumers have the opportunity to play a first hand role in empowering these artisans while getting a unique hand crafted piece in their home.
Founder and CEO Sheeva Sairafi's interest in culturally rich pieces began at a young age. But it was during a trip to South America, the summer after college graduation, that her appreciation turned into a passion to share. After spending time along side Peruvian weavers learning their culture, traditions and the art of crafting, Sheeva was left in awe of their unparalleled skilled. But in talking with the women, she soon understood their struggle to sell their products. Knowing these artisans needed a steady business, as they were at the mercy of tourism season, she and her sister took as many blankets back to the states as they could fit. Friends loved the items and Sheeva knew she had a unique opportunity. Local + Lejos was born to connect these talented artisans with consumers who may never have had the opportunity to find themselves abroad.
The literal meaning of their name Local {english} being or relating to a particular area and Lejos {Spanish} far away, distant was the perfect name to encompass the companies mission and purpose. Loving everything this company had to offer, We fired questions off to CEO Sheeva, to get some more insight.
What keeps you inspired?
Since starting this adventure a few months ago, I’ve met some really amazing people. This community of conscious individuals that are working to create opportunity in the world constantly inspire me. It has been so amazing to see people so interested in the mission of the company, and really care that every dollar they spend is going to something with meaning.
Favorite product you have created?
My favorite product I've created so far are woven baskets that are currently on their way from Rwanda. It was my first time working with this group of artisan women and designing baskets. Because we've had to work really hard together to get them right, these baskets truly embody the mission of Local + Lejos. By teaching the artisans new patterns and new ways to think about baskets, it has helped empower them to learn and try new things! As a bonus, the earnings from the work helped to but them chickens, goats, pigs and cows to help feed their families.
Favorite thing about Local + Lejos?
My favorite thing about Local + Lejos is that it encompasses my three biggest passions in life: beautifully designed product, business for social good, and adventurous travel.
What does “impact” mean to you?
To me, impact means something that is lasting. The mission of Local + Lejos is to create sustainable change in the communities we work with by empowering the women we employ, a powerful force that transcends outside of work and into everyday life.
How does California inspire your pieces?
The goal of Local + Lejos is to create pieces that can be used in every day life in California, so I’m inspired every day identifying products that would fit in the California lifestyle. The Striped Serape Blanket is a perfect example of this. The blanket reminds me of beach days in Venice, wine picnics in Malibu, and outdoor music listening at Coachella.
Favorite product in the line?
Right now, the Accessory Bag is my favorite product in the line. They are all one-of-a kind, unique, and so fun! I love that they can be used for almost anything, and are the perfect fun pop inside my black leather bag.

A transplant from Mississippi, Kathleen lives in Southern California with her husband, Christian, adorable pooch Bailey and kitty Lula LaShonda (yes you read that right). Carrie Bradshaw Lied started five years ago after Kathleen graduated college (a proud Ole Miss alum) and realized post-grad life was not all what Carrie Bradshaw promised it to be. It inspired her to create a place where she could share a peak into her own life, never thinking more than 20 people would read it. And here she is, five years later, dishing out all kinds of fashion goodness and lifestyle tips to the everyday gal. Now, on her site you can find all kinds of great content; but what got me first hooked on Kathleen's blog, was her fashion. Effortless, timeless, trendy, fashionable and more importantly, affordable.
Of course I took the opportunity to fire off a couple questions at Kathleen as I was curious to know a bit more about the gal behind the blog. And what I discovered was exactly what I expected. She's an everyday kinda chick; funny, charismatic, driven with a soft side. You can commonly find her gushing about her husband on her site (I can't say I blame her) or her animal babies, but she was quick to point out the other people in her life who help shape her. For instance, her three year old niece Edie who has a genetic disease that has left her severely handicapped. She beams that her niece has "changed the way I love and the way I view parenthood. I love that baby girl so much it hurts!"
Kathleen's blog is so much more than fashion. Despite working her regular "day job" she makes time for CBL because she is passionate about it and as a result, her blog comes from a place of loving what she does. She encourages anyone looking to start a blog to be sure they too are doing it from a place of love, inspiration and a desire to share with others.
She has learned lots about herself in her twenties, in becoming a wife and starting Carrie Bradshaw Lied. Advice she could easily give her 16 year old self, "Everything doesn't always work out perfectly according to your plan...and that ok. Dream big and don't let the bump along the way cloud your vision." She inspires her readers to reach a place of self acceptance and she does so by leading by example. She isn't afraid to put herself out there, in fact she credits this as her favorite quality about herself. In her words, "In order to achieve great things you have to be willing to fail, and failing is Ok." She references her favorite quote:
“A winner is just a loser who tried one more time.”
But see CBL keeps on winning for me. Maybe its her witty humor or relatability, I can't put the nail on the head. Let's be honest, its probably those impeccable fashion choices. Which once again brings me back to the fashion. I mean, it's more than fashion, it's self expression! Lets talk about it, shall we?!
Favorite look you have created?
Oh goodness – I don’t know if I can name just one! I would say my favorite looks are the ones where I felt most confident because I look comfortable and happy. That being said, I’m always confident in a midi skirt and sky-high stilettos. I’ve had several midi skirts on the blog in the past year – I’m addicted.
What does fashion mean to you?
It’s such an enormous way to express who you are. I think I show my personality in the way that I dress – loud, playful, (usually) put together with an occasional touch of sparkle.
What keeps you inspired?
Playing in my own closet and trying to create new outfits using pieces I already own. I’ve always felt maximizing your closet is key.
What should readers know about you?

What keeps you inspired?
I continue to stay inspired by keeping my eyes open and my mind spinning. Music, art and even memes excite me and make me want to create. Pinterest has been a huge asset for graphic, fashion and recipe ideas and all the wonderful travel I've been blessed with lately keeps monotony at bay. I encourage everyone to constantly challenge their senses and keep a sketch book to capture ideas! Be curious and boundless. Inspiration is ubiquitous.
What advice would you give to your
16-year-old self?
I would tell my 16 year old self to stop being so hard on my mom. Looking back, I could have been a little kinder and more forgiving because she's the bomb. That lady is one strong person to raise three pretty cool daughters on a teacher's salary :)
What’s your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of the day is first thing in the morning when I hear "Good morning sweetheart" which is immediately followed by three kisses: one on the forehead from Sean and two sloppy ones on the face by my girls. Luckiest girl in the world :)
Is the glass half empty or half full?
Who would ever admit to being half empty?! I'd like to think I'm a realist and my life is pretty dang great so glass half full. But that might be too optimistic because I complain a lot. I'm a moody girl, what can I say?
What’s your favorite kind of party?
Pajama Party! My friends have been throwing them recently and I'm a huge fan. Being comfortable in public is a rarity these days and I'm too old for being around skankiness which hardly ever happens at PJ parties. Plus, old school games are way too fun to pass up.
If you were to perform in the circus, what would you do?
Oh, I was meant to be in the circus. At age 8 I started riding a unicycle and found myself on a 6-footer in parades with fellow nerds. Since then, I've taken trapeze and aerial silk classes so I'd imagine I'd be what you call an "All-Around." Heck, I would even be up for being a clown as long as my name was Honkers. (Someone, please hire me.)
How has marriage changed you?
Marriage has changed me by striving for patience and accepting spontaneity. I used to be a planner but since Sean isn't that way at all, I've had to allow for the unexpected. I can be a real pain too so learning to say "I'm sorry, I love you" has been a huge change for me. I also have learned every single quarterback, coach and mascot currently in the NFL.

With a raised brow and baited breath, Valentine’s Day is left for the men to get right, so give him a break and listen closely. Date Nights are at the top of Sean and my list when it comes to spending intentional and weekly time together. Yes, we are “inseparable” but I’d hardly consider playing games on our iPads while watching Gold Rush quality time. That’s why, when we have free time in our schedule, I expect a date night with my hubs. Here are just a few of my tips to start thinking about what you should plan for your man in the coming weeks:
Something Messy
It's no secret that Sean and I are pizza fanatics, but it may be less known that I love to be in the kitchen with my man. Homemade pizzas are great for any situation, for any flavor preferences, and for any stage of a relationship. A third date to a husband (and all things in between) can enjoy a date that involves you potentially covered in food ;) The key is the quality of ingredients and your pizza partner. Whether or not he's actually contributing, he's pretty to look at while things get a little messy. The foreplay starts at the grocery store so keep that in mind. Communicating what you like on your pie and hearing his favorite flavors gets your appetites whet. Don't skimp on anything (I spring for the expensive cheese and meats) because you won't want the first time to be the last time too. Get it cookin in the kitchen. Wink!
Something Active
Doing something active with your guy is undeniably fun. It's nostalgic, upbeat and just a little friendly competition. It's also something your guy probably loves! And pleasing him is pretty darn important. My personal faves: driving range, batting cages, bike riding, kayaking. And if you're drinking buddies too, a lot of places these days have the option to drink responsibly while you play. Just don't get too serious about winning...having fun is the victory!
Something 50's
Expect to be asked to "go steady" after you plan this wholesome date idea: a picnic! I planned an evening in our backyard early in our marriage and it was so sweet. To make it grown-up and very personalized, choose foods you know you'll both enjoy and don't JUST bring PB&Js. I homemade paninis and wrapped them like a fancy deli would and packaged gourmet Mac and cheese in tupperware, among other tasty, easy to eats. This date is conducive for simple romance and uninterrupted conversation. Just make sure to truly take it back to the 50's and ditch the cell phones :)
Something New
I love learning new things with my honey and date nights are a great time to focus on that. Anyone can take you to a movie but why don't you surprise him with a day learning archery or chess?! When you challenge and pave the way for your guy, it gets him thinking creatively about how to one up you next time he has to plan date night. The best places to get ideas is from friends and Pinterest! Oh and Groupon always has get deals on things to try in your area.
Something Trippy
If you have access to a car and a free weekend, take a trip! Road trips are great for the couple who can spend long periods of time together--which should be all couples! Create a playlist of jams you both can get down on and some potential stops you might want to make. Since you won't have a strict timeline, you'll be more likely to jump on spontaneous opportunities that come up! Read suggestions on Yelp so you don't get stuck in a sketchy place. But if you do, won't that be a fun story?! Don't forget snacks to keep in the car and shades to keep on your face :)

When I moved to Dallas, I took the essentials: my clothes and my computers. Other than that, I knew that Sean and I would create something unique to us when we found that perfect house. And when we did, we did. Our house is our most favorite place in the whole wide world because we had been planning it for so long. Little known fact, at our Canada cocktail party before the rose ceremony, our limited time together was spent frolicking (duh), laughing (double duh) and sharing the things we wanted in a home. “A big porch”…”Me too!”…giggle giggle…“I want a nice kitchen with an island”… “Oooh, that sounds nice…” What a coupla nerds.
But creating the home we wanted didn’t come as easy as reciting our dream lists. He is a southern, tidy man and I’m an eclectic, messy girl after all. Our needs sometimes didn’t match up perfectly. Luckily, there are girl bands to save the day. Anything you need to know about merging two lives together can be learned from The Spice Girls’ song “2 Become 1.” (Do not take this literally. Please keep reading.) Whether you’re moving in with someone you’re dating or you’re creating a home with your husband, there are tips that I’ve learned from experience that hopefully help you with your Relationship & Abode Fondue…all through Spice Girls lyrics.
“Empty words we both were saying”
Be honest. When you are building your special place with that special someone, be upfront about what you need. From something as specific as “I need a space where my cat poster collection will be preserved” to something as generic as “I need to feel safe”, tell him—nicely yet directly. Mine was “I need it to feel warm and ours.” If he knows what is important to you, he should respect that. If you’re moving into his place and everything still looks like a bachelor pad (har har), ask him to incorporate more of what you like into it. It is yours now too. Also, shut your mouth when it doesn’t matter. Do you really care if the curtains are that color? No? Then be supportive and move on to something that matters.
“I had a little love, now I’m back for more”
WANT to come home. You’re gonna want to go on date nights, but you should also be excited to get home. Make a space that you both absolutely adore so you can create memories together somewhere that was truly created together. Sean and I have a room that is built for comfort. It’s our TV room and we call it “The Pit” because once you’re in, you’ll never get out. This place is where we find so much joy and when we’re on the road, we have dreams about getting back to it. Form a room or space in your home that makes you feel comfortable and completely yourself. Then, go out so you can be excited to come home.

(Not true lyrics, but let’s pretend. Also, should I be a songwriter or what?!)
Respect each other. The only doormat in our house is the one that says “Sup.” Neither one of us takes a backseat in the decision-making of our relationship or our house because we are both integral voices. Sean and I have been lucky enough to share a similar taste in home décor but I have (respectively) had to put my foot down when he was trying to bring his jank college guy pots and pans into my pristine kitchen. When it comes to décor, ladies don’t get too floofy on him because he’ll want to have his buddies over and you don’t want him to be the butt of every joke because of your doing. Don’t emasculate him but I’m all for bringing up the class level in your new grown up spot.
This is the space you both will call home and that in itself is pretty darn special. Enjoy the piles of dirty dishes, the toilet seat being up, the new homeowner sales pitchy mail, the 24/7 ESPN. And... all the sweet goodnight kisses. You can’t forget about those :)

On the rise tastemaker, Ryan White has swiftly made a lasting statement in the world of interiors. With just a couple of interior design years under his belt, Ryan continues to wow us with his sophisticated interiors and career success.
On the rise tastemaker, Ryan White has swiftly made a lasting statement in the world of interiors. With just a couple of interior design years under his belt, Ryan continues to wow with his sophisticated interiors and career success. An already noteworthy designer amongst publication giants such as Elle Décor, House Beautiful, and Traditional Home, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet such a talent in person. Coffee at Alfred in West Hollywood posed to be the perfect place to get an intimate account of how it feels to be designer, Ryan White.
What started as a departure from New York and a successful career in fashion as a Ford Model, Ryan relocated to Los Angeles to move in with his partner and pursue a career in acting. After a few months of living in LA and temporarily landing in a West Hollywood zip code, Ryan did not anticipate that in designing their “in-between” residence, he would not only unveil his natural talent, but true passion for interiors and design. “I knew midway through my home project, this was something I was meant to do,” Ryan says. The good thing was that, “I have close designer friends back in New York, so this world did not feel foreign.”
After completing the residence, confirmation soon came that he was on the right path. While entertaining friends at home, a couple fell in love with his design work. Work Ryan describes as “cultivated.” An aesthetic that is not existent of a specific time or place. Rather, “a well traveled space” that marries texture to new, vintage and one of a kind elements resulting in a clean, luxe and comfortable space. With this couple’s recently purchased exclusive beach home in Malibu, and desire for their space to have similar reflection, Ryan landed his first major design project and what he considers his first career break. “I was given full creative control and it was my first big project…I completely immersed myself in it,” he explains.
Continuing this past year with the same mentality of “total immersion” in his work, Ryan has become a highly sought designer. Recognized for his “keen sense of style and fashion sensibility,” he attributes this to his years spent in fashion, travels around the world and style icons James Dean and Cary Grant.
Now, not only a successful designer, but owner of his own firm, Ryan is feeling “Grateful. But overwhelmed,” in the most recent mentions of his name said amongst the likes of Nate Berkus and Kelly Wearstler as the next young emerging talent of this industry. At only 30 years old, he is prepared to keep working hard at evolving his brand. With a recent reality design pilot shot for TV, he is feeling confident this will be a phase where he can share all of his creative talents. The only difference is he says, “my thirties are for finding balance.”
