Planning a trip to Norway? You’ll love it!

It’s probably a bit unfair to outrightly declare a country the most beautiful in the world, but Norway would certainly be a top contender. Its otherworldly landscapes of deep fjords, rugged coastline, majestic glaciers and jagged mountain ridges make for a stunning adventure.

This Northern California photographer decided to leave small town life for a new adventure in the bustling big city of Los Angeles. We’re sharing his work and his story with you all today.

What’s a typical day look like for you?

Are usually take every day as a new day, so no routines really. I do however start it with a cup of coffee no sugar no milk. The plan is always to try to make myself as happy as I can as much as I can every day.

What keeps you inspired?

The thing that keeps me inspired is knowing that every single person that I or you look up to started somewhere and most likely similar to where you and i started even the people with millions of followers and all the money in the world.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

About two weeks ago when I moved away from my hometown for the first time and saw Los Angeles for the first time.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Something most people don’t know about me is that I am a very shy person, I will act like I’m not shy and force myself to not be shy and be more outgoing, but it really used to affect me in a major way, then one day I kind of realized that everyone is a little shy and that helped me a lot.

Everything has an end, all the good things and all the bad things.

What would you name this chapter of your life?

Trevor Stone 2.0

Favorite thing about California?

My favorite thing about California is that you have a little bit of everything here. There’s dessert, forest, beaches, city, suburbs, and everything in between.

What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling?

Honestly i think in the near future I’m going to have way better memorable traveling moments than this, but the most memorable moment i think I’ve experienced is after moving to LA, i definitely saw it and thought “Wow this place is big!” However what i was referring to was the tall buildings and a small portion of the surrounding area. It wasn’t until i went to visit the Hollywood sign and saw the entirety of Los Angeles and it literally blew my mind at how MASSIVE this place is. I had never seen an area of land that big in that perspective in my life.

What’s one thing you found challenging but eventually overcame?

Honestly, the move to Los Angeles. The plan was to move here with two roommates, they both backed out due to different reasons, i had to interview 3 times for a job transfer, and once i got the job transfer i had a deadline to find a living situation (which i didn’t find till a week that i had to be in LA) through this process i realized that i have a path, everyone has a path, and that we all have this thing in us. Some people call it Instinct, some people call it your gut, some call it your heart. I describe it as my arrow, and as long as I didn’t think about the big picture and just thought about that arrow and where it showed me to go and listened to it, everything ended up working out.

What’s next for you?

So I’ve always been known for photography, which is amazing, but I’ve always been much more fascinated and more passionate about filmmaking and video production, so i feel that my next chapter or step in my life journey is really targeting video production and seeing what i can do in that space.

NAKED CONVERSATIONS: MEET JESSIE MCCALL, ARTIST & PHOTOGRAPHER

Meet Jessie McCall, a photographer and artist I met while we both were living in Australia. We became fast friends, as we both were creative types originally from California and found ourselves living on the other side of the globe. We spent many days exchanging ideas about love and life, and enjoyed many spontaneous adventures together. Her work, both above and below the water, is truly breathtaking and we knew we had to share with the estCA community.

I met Jessie while we both were living in Australia. We became fast friends, as we both were creative types originally from California and we found ourselves living on the other side of the world, away from our families and friends, during a time when international borders were closed and many people were struggling. We spent many days exchanging ideas about love and life, and enjoyed many spontaneous adventures together where we got to play with our cameras, both above and below the water. I was instantly drawn to Jessie’s work and how passionate she was about giving people a space to feel empowered in their bodies. I knew I wanted to share her work with the Established California community

When you’re a photographer interjecting yourself into someone’s orbit you have two options: be a fly on the wall or integrate. I choose to integrate.
— Jessie McCall

elyse-littlegreeneyes-6711.jpg

What’s a typical day look like for you?

Not sure I really know what a typical day looks like. For me typical is anything that lasts longer than a month for me. A piece of my morning routine I can’t live without is my matcha. I have a little routine with collagen powder and matcha and oat milk. No matter where I am or what I’m doing I do my best to have slow mornings to get my bearings.

What keeps you inspired?

Working with new people and constantly trying to change at least one variable in my shoot routine. Sometimes if my go-to variable change isn’t working then I like to travel to somewhere new and shake up my surroundings.

What advice would you give your 16 year old self?

Stop worrying so much about guys - they will notice you in a few years and the thrill of it will never be as great as finding acceptance and love for yourself and all your messy tendencies.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I’m pretty transparent on my socials, I feel like 95% of my life is available to be public knowledge. I’m tiny, 5’1 - that doesn’t always come through in my photos. Driving in unfamiliar places makes me nervous. I still get anxiety on flights. I was single for 8 years in my 20’s.

Favorite thing about California?

The landscape. The weather. The dry heat in the foothills in the summer. The crystal clear river where I grew up near Tahoe. California is my childhood memory, the environment that raised me. No matter how volatile the fire season gets, I keep coming back for more. Deep down CA will always be my first love. Also my parents still live there so that’s a big part of why I keep coming back for more.

What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling?

Dancing to “Love is All” by Tallest Man on Earth on the top of Machu Picchu Mountain with my sister. It was my first time traveling abroad and I was terrified heading into that trip and it ended up being an incredibly formative adventure that would shape my 20’s

A close second is being on tour with Gregory Alan Isakov in Europe in 2018. I’m a big fan of his music so to be in these incredible venues day in and day out listening to the band soundcheck, roaming the streets of Paris or Edinburgh with the guys. Not much tops the intoxicating experience of rolling off a bus in a new city every day with a group of strangers that then become your friends.

What’s one thing you found challenging but eventually overcame?

Moving to Australia was pretty challenging at first. I really didn’t want to leave the US, my community, my family, my cats, my house - but decided to move over to Oz for the summer and to nurture my relationship. Then the pandemic happened and my 5 month plan has turned into a 15+ month plan. But there’s been a lot of trial and adjustment both in finding a happy medium in my relationship and in where we’ve chosen to live in this fine country. First, I  started to build a community here, then an online business, then we moved to a climate that I love (versuss the big city hustle). Everything is starting to come together now. People told me it’d take a year but I’ve always been impatient.

Beyond that, the self discovery journey can be pretty challenging at times. I definitely haven’t overcome my demons but I am learning how to live with them and provide them space when they rear up and need attention. I’m moving from denial and shame to a place of comfort and acceptance. The more I lean in to who I am and the more I am okay with my edges, the more they naturally begin to soften.

Screen Shot 2021-01-26 at 9.37.00 AM.png

What’s next for you?

Focusing on developing more question cards for my Naked Conversation card deck. I’m super passionate about this product I created during our last lockdown in Melbourne. I drew all the card front images (78) from photos I have taken with a few additions from some friends. My partner and I were definitely struggling to connect during our saturated time together so I selfishly went to work creating this deck of cards. Once it was complete I realized how much these cards could serve the community around me so I pulled the trigger and went for it. Building a commerce business has been SO much fun, I’m hooked now. It definitely takes a lot of work and I’m learning a lot but ultimately it’s been a really fun .

#VANLIFE: MEET CHIARA & MARCO, TWO ITALIANS TRAVELING AUSTRALIA IN THEIR CONVERTED TROOPY

When I first moved to Australia, I took a few months to drive around and explore the country. Along the way, I met so many amazing people - some who lived permanently in their vans - and some who utilize their little home on wheels for road trips and extended holidays. Regardless, all these people had one thing in common: a passion for adventure.

A note from Editor, Lindsay Vacek:

When I first moved to Australia, I took a few months to drive around and explore the country. I had rented a 4x4 SUV and converted it into something I could easily camp in while on the road. Along the way, I met so many amazing people - some who lived permanently in their vans - and some who utilize their little home on wheels for road trips and extended holidays. Regardless, all these people had one thing in common: a passion for adventure. I became obsessed with spending nights by the campfire, hearing about their journeys and I knew I needed to bring heir stories to all of you.

What’s your name?  Kendall Baggerly

Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself! I'm originally from San Diego, California. I studied abroad in Sydney in 2015 which is when I met my now boyfriend, Glenn. We did a lot of long distance at the start of our relationship until I officially moved to Australia in 2017, and we've been here ever since! We've spent the last year living in our van Vance travelling the country – hands down the best decision we've ever made.

What’s a typical day look like for you? No two days are the same on the road, but we do like to keep our morning routine the same every day. We wake up with the sun, make a yummy coffee and then plan our day out. Sometimes it's spent exploring new places – hiking, swimming, surfing, rock pool hunting. But other times it's a lot less fun – doing laundry, running errands, going to the mechanics. It's all a big balance but we love it!

When did you first get your home on wheels? We bought our Vance about two years ago initially just as a weekend van to take on trips out of the city. Safe to say we fell in love with the lifestyle and quickly made plans to turn him into a full-time home on wheels.

What was the build-out like and how long did it take? Any difficult challenges you faced? We did our build at a community workshop that had all the tools and space necessary to get the job done. We paid for a month's use of the space, so we worked every single day until it was done in about a month's time! We didn't have any major challenges, but a lot of the time our days were spent problem solving. Working with such a tiny area like a van means every little space matters, so every decision (e.g. how far out to make the bench top, how to maximize underbed storage, etc.) had to be really thought out. It can be really overwhelming but it's also so empowering!

What’s your favorite part of your home? Hands down our favorite part is our pull-out kitchenette that allows us to cook out the side of Vance. It doubles as our pantry storage as well, and we love it! Other than that I'd say our next favorite is our pop-top. Being able to stand up inside the van is a luxury I'll never take for granted.

DSC00426.jpg

Where to next? We're planning on heading to Western Australia next and will most likely spend about a year there. After our entire trip is done, we want to also do a trip in Vance to NZ once the borders open. I'd also love to do vanlife over in the states in a few years time. So many places to explore!

Best advice or tip for those wanting to choose #vanlife? Be prepared for things to not go to plan. Between breakdowns, bad weather and good ol' covid, we've had to change our plans a lot more than we thought. But that's okay! The more you're able to go with the flow, the better. This lifestyle is full of ups and downs, and that's all part of the adventure.

What is the most difficult challenge you’ve faced living in your van or on the road? We had a really bad breakdown at the beginning of our trip, which was a massive headache (and bill!). And right after we got it fixed, we were hit with travel restrictions due to covid and got stuck in a small town for three months. It was a really hard time, but in retrospect it taught us to slow down and never take our time on the road for granted. There's always a silver lining!

What song is a “must” for the road trip playlist? You can never go wrong with a little Bohemian Rhapsody! We always add that song to our road trip playlists for a little mood booster. Aside from that, we're big fans of Rufus, Ziggy Alberts and Crooked Colours :)

What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling? We recently travelled to Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia with some friends. One afternoon we went exploring to a hidden beach to escape the crowds, and as soon as we got onto the beach we were greeted with around 30 dolphins that came near the shore. We all went running in to swim with them and instead of swimming away, the dolphins stayed around and hung out with us for a bit. It was one of the most magical experiences getting to see so many of them in their natural habitat, playing in the waters with us. We were all completely speechless. Definitely a moment that we'll forever cherish!

How do people find you/connect? (list your social media/website/etc) My Instagram is @kendallbaggerly and we're also on YouTube under Kendall and Glenn, which is where we share a little more in-depth content of our travels around Aus, including that memorable dolphin swim! :)

AN UNFORGETTABLE RAILWAY EXPERIENCE THRU THE WILD

Step back in history and take a breathtaking train journey deep into the heritage of the Tasmanian wilderness and hear tales of resilience and triumph over rugged terrain, hardship and adversity. Much more than a railway journey within a wilderness setting, the West Coast Wilderness Railway is a heritage experience that will touch your soul.

IMG_1672.jpg

A SPOTLIGHT ON THE WEST COAST WILDERNESS RAILROAD IN TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA

This post is part of an ongoing “EPIC (VIRTUAL) AUSTRALIAN ROAD TRIP” from estCA staff, Lindsay Vacek. Make sure to check back often to read and discover all she has to share.

I traveled through Tasmania around Valentine’s Day in early 2020. I had spent a week just exploring and driving around, mostly alone, but wanted to do something special for the “day of love”. I knew that the last thing I wanted to do was sit alone in a restaurant, surrounded by couples in love (no hate to all the couples out there!). I had heard about a stream train that traveled along the west coast of the island - now this, seemed like the perfect experience to take myself on.

I arrived at the train station in Queenstown early on Valentine’s Day morning and grabbed a cup of coffee. After I checked in, I was soon seated into the Ambassador Lounge of the train. This part of the train (there are two parts) included a welcome drink, some snacks and a light lunch.

We headed off. It was no surprise that the crew on the train was very friendly as they joked and explained the history of the area, the railroad and why it was built (to get people from inside the forest to the town for school and work). We made stops along the way where you would disembark and walk around and explore as they refueled the steam train with more water. We even got to pan for gold which brought me back to my early childhood memories of panning for gold while learning about California’s “Gold Rush” - the very thing that brought settlers to the “Golden State”.

If you ever find yourself in Tasmania, this is definitely worth a stop. Book tickets at westcoastwildernesstour.com and be sure to let us know what you think.

“The more time I spend in the sun & salt, the more my tank is filled & the more creative I feel I can be. For me the ocean is symbolic of pure freedom ~ you just can't be stressed floating in the sea!” - Sarah

Established-California-Sarah-of-Salty-Luxe-Travel-Spotlight

What’s a typical day look like for you?

It depends if we are working at home or away. When we are at home we’re working on our blogs, editing, designing & working on our sustainable label and store, etc.

A typical day on location is all systems go and we are very much in a content creation headspace. We’d be up for sunrise to shoot still and video content, followed by breakfast and a post to the ‘gram. We then try to get back to as many DM’s as possible and answer emails. Then we shoot underwater during highlight and overhead drone content. In the afternoon, we relax a little and prep the post for the following day. We’ll finish with an early evening shoot and then do it all again!

What keeps you inspired?

Definitely the ocean. The more time I spend in the sun & salt, the more my tank is filled and the more creative I feel I can be. For me, the ocean is symbolic of pure freedom ~ you just can’t be stressed floating in the sea!

What advice would you give your 16 year old self?

Be yourself, my beautiful friends. The world needs what you’ve got. YOU are ENOUGH. Nourish yourself with good food. Family is everything. Travel makes the world small and makes you realize we’re all human. Love your booty! Being young is the most incredible thing in the world, don’t take it for granted. One day you’ll find someone that makes you realize why all the others didn’t work out. Anything you want is possible, you just have to work for it. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Be fierce and full of fire. We have one life, live it your way.

What song(s) is a “must” for a road trip playlist?

Anything by Ziggy Alberts (a Byron Bay local), Maggie Rogers, Donovan Woods + anything 70’s!

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I hate flying. I’m pretty sure I have a phobia and every time I fly, I suffer from anxiety. I thought it would go away with huge hours in the sky, but it hasn’t.

Favorite thing about California?

It’s got a lot of collective similarities to our hometown of Byron Bay. Everything from the relaxed surf culture, artistic energy, natural beauty & chilled out vibe, it’s perfectly aligned to what enlivens us most. I love it!

Established-California-Sarah-of-Salty-Luxe-Travel-Adventure-Palm-Springs

Best thing you ever ate and where?

50c tacos from a hole-in-the-wall taqueria while lost somewhere in Mexico.

What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling?

So many honestly. One of my most joyful travel memories is definitely living with a hill tribe in Burma, working as a volunteer on an elephant conservation project. I did this solo when I was in my early 20’s and it was life changing. Besides that, sleeping in shacks on remote islands in French Polynesia, diving and interacting with whales, swimming with sharks for the first time, those incredible conversations you get into with strangers that become life-long friends instantly, traveling in a van through California, backpacking Central America for 6 months, and exploring remote areas of Australia (just to name a few!!)

While I was traveling along the Great Ocean Road earlier this year, I stumbled across a local fashion label as I was scrolling through Instagram. I’ve always been someone who appreciates vintage, unisex fashion so I immediately gave them a “follow” and have appreciated them popping up in my feed ever since.

I was lucky enough to be able to chat with Neri and Manu and talk about the label and what keeps them inspired. The couple launched the retro clothing label in 2018, which was inspired by the tall forests, fern-filled gullies and waterfalls of Victoria’s Otway Ranges. Since then, they’ve also launched a sustainability program called Solo Sunny Days where some funds from every purchase go towards installing solar power in community buildings around Australia.

Ottway’s collections are all vintage-inspired, unisex and made in limited numbers as part of a commitment to sustainable practice. Each piece has its own story, inspired by their travels, by nature or their own family history - giving the brand that personal touch that can resonate within us all.

What’s a typical day look like for you?

Neri: Our days have changed a little bit due to everything that’s gone on this year, but we’ve placed an emphasis on slowing down, getting back to nature and connecting with our local community.

We’ve been working from home, so we like to start the day by going for a walk on Port Melbourne beach and Manu goes for a swim every morning. While Manu is swimming I do a workout or play with our little dog Suny - it’s so nice to start the day fresh.

From there we make a plan for the day, chat through our ideas and have a phone call with our team to put things into action.

We work closely together on the brand throughout the day, and Manu works hard on his other job at an international renewables company. We take breaks to explore our neighbourhood, meeting new people in the area etc. Covid was a really good opportunity to connect with our community as we’re usually travelling so much. It’s also been a great time to start working on our new store as we have more downtime.

What keeps you inspired?

Manu: We used to travel a lot for inspiration, but due to the challenging year that’s been, we’ve been at home a lot more. It’s pushed us to look for ways to find freedom when we’re not exactly free to roam our country or the world, so instead, we’ve enjoyed discovering our neighbourhood and exploring new ways to find freedom. That’s exactly what our latest campaign, Outside is Better, is founded on.

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?

Neri: Be confident with yourself. You have to believe in your dreams and fight for them. I think that’s the best because when you’re a teenager, you think everyone around you is better than you, but it’s not about that. You have to create your own life and believe that you can do it. You are amazing. If someone told me that I was going to be in Australia one day, a co-owner of a successful fashion brand and creating content for other brands I love, I couldn’t believe it. Honestly, I would say no, that’s not me, that’s impossible, because I love fashion, but to have that in Australia in an exotic country, that’s a dream.

What song(s) is a “must” for a road trip playlist?

Manu: Gloria by Them & Van Morrison! That song will always remind us of trips down to our bus in the Otways. We’ve also created a few playlists on Spotify for our community that are perfect for road trips. As well, Bob Marley is always an endless source of inspiration. We believe Music is Mood Medicine.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Neri: A lot of people don’t know that we’re actually from Spain. We’ve immersed ourselves in the Ottway brand and the Otway region so much that a lot of people assume we are from here when in fact, we moved across the world six years ago and we’re so happy to now call Melbourne home.

Manu: I still work full-time at a very demanding corporate job developing renewable energy across Australia. It is good fun and rewarding promoting a sustainable future!

Best thing you ever ate and where?

Neri: To be honest I just love Spanish food so much. I love the pinxos from North Spain, I love just having a huge spread and trying different things. All of them are so yummy. I love going from one bar to another and experiencing the variety - it makes the experience so much better.

What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling?

Oman was incredible - the desert and the oasis was stunning, with not many people around, just driving in the car to amazing spots. North China in the mountains was incredible - we went there for a product sourcing trip and took some time to explore. The people and the places were amazing.

Estbalished-California-Ottway-The-Label-Spotlight-Office

What’s next for you?

We’ve been working really hard on our sustainability program, Solo Sunny Days, which sees that profits from each purchase are donated towards installing solar power into community-owned projects across Australia that are otherwise unlikely to happen. So far, three community-owned projects have been given the gift of solar energy and we’re looking for our next project.

In other exciting news, our flagship store has just launched! It’s something we’ve put so much work into this year and we’re so excited to finally have a place for people to come and see and feel the product, and a space for us to meet our customers face to face and to build community. We’re at 31 Sackville Street, Collingwood - come and say hola next time you’re in Melbourne!

LUXURY GLAMPING IN JERVIS BAY, AUSTRALIA

The next stop on the (virtual) Australian road trip is at Paperbark Camp - located in a small town called Jervis Bay, just 2.5 hours south of Sydney. The 13 canvas safari-style tents have been placed amongst the eucalyptus and paperbarks, built above the ground to give privacy and capture the sea breeze. The camp offers an experience I can only describe as paradise. Whether you are a solo traveler (like I was) or looking for a romantic getaway, this is a must.

The property has some easy walking trails that meander through paperbark, gum and mangrove forests and are perfect for a stroll before breakfast (a great time for spotting kangaroos). Or grab your flashlight and walk the trails in the evening if you fancy spotting possums and other nocturnal residents.

The Gunyah (aboriginal for meeting place) is the heart of the camp. A restaurant, reception, bar and communal lounge area - the Gunyah welcomes both in-house and non-resident guests. If you are staying at camp, you automatically will have a table reserved - but if you are hoping to come enjoy otherwise, make sure to book plenty in advance as reservations tend to book out and with good reason! The chef does an amazing job and the food is absolutely mouth-watering!

I was so grateful for the two days I spent here, just relaxing and reading and playing music. This was truly one of the best experience I have ever been had - from the friendly staff, the campfire and communal areas and the outdoor shower in the bathroom.. I’m counting down the days until I can find myself back at this little slice of heaven.

How to go

You can book a trip to Paperbark Camp at its website: https://paperbarkcamp.com.au/. I stayed in one of the Original Tents, which sleeps two comfortably and costs around $500 per night and includes breakfast and dinner. Or you can opt for the Deluxe or King Deluxe tents for an even more luxury experience.

MEET MINNO: CORGI, BEST FRIEND AND BALCONY NAPPER

Our pets are our family. They have distinct personalities and quirks. Our pets are our family. They have distinct personalities and quirks. It’s like you know exactly what they are saying to you when they look up at you, from the end of the couch, after an afternoon nap , right? Well, guest editor, Becca Kufrin is giving us a glimpse into the new Los Angeles life of her Corgi, Minno, this week - sploot photos and all.

Everyday my mom likes to try and wake me up around 7 am. Since I’m still a growing girl who needs her beauty rest, that’s WAY too early. So she usually lets me lounge in the bed all to myself till about 7:30, because by then it’s time for my morning walk and bathroom break. We usually go about a mile, all the while I’m on the lookout for the squirrels.

Squirrel hunting is my favorite form of exercise. After a few potty sessions, stopping to smell every nook and cranny along the way, we venture home for my gourmet breakfast. I love to eat but I’m getting a little sick of my mom feeding me the same old stuff day after day. Usually by this point it’s time for my first nap out in the sun on the balcony. Or sometimes I fall asleep while staring at the neighbors on the back of the couch, I’m not picky.

Later in the afternoon (if I’m a good girl) I usually get a spot of peanut butter before heading off to the dog park to see my friends. Now I LOVE the dog park and I love making friends. My best friend is a Aussie named Leo. He usually chases me for a bit, but since he’s getting kind of chunky during quarantine he doesn’t like to run as much as I do. But that’s okay because there are a lot of other dogs around that I like to rile up. I feel like I take after my mom in the sense that I like to be chased. I heard she was a Bachelorette back in the day and a lot of guys chased her - but she doesn’t seem cool enough for that, so it could just be made up.

Established-California-Becca-Kufrin-Corgi-Dog-Park

I hate the moments that come after the dog park because that usually means a bath. I’m not the biggest fan of water so I typically try to make an escape, but it never quite works out - my short little legs don’t get me too far.

After that I have another sun-basking balcony nap before dinner. After dinner my mom tries to get me to burn off the calories I just packed on, so we take another long stroll through the neighborhood where we look at all the cute houses I hope to one day live in. A girl can dream, right? Speaking of dreams, now it's usually time for bed.

WHAT IS A “SPLOOT”?

A sploot is a type of stretch that some pets do. Although it's typically associated with corgis, many types of dogs and cats can sploot too. This special stretch is defined as a pet laying on their belly while stretching their legs out behind them. When you see a pet splooting, it's a pretty funny sight — almost like they're ready to take flight à la Superman! Although a traditional sploot requires that both legs stick straight out, there are a couple of variations: A) the "half-sploot" is when only one leg is sticking out, and B) the "side sploot" is when the pet's legs don't stretch straight out, but lean to one side.

MY FAVORITE THINGS… WITH BECCA

I’m the go-to girl for a good charcuterie board at any party or picnic, and if there was an Olympics competition for snack preparation and eating, then I’d take the gold medal. This week I’m sharing some of my favorite things, and what you’ll find if you looked in my pantry.

GETTING TO KNOW ME - AND MY FRIDGE.

Contributed by Guest Editor, Becca Kufrin

As I’ve expressed in my previous blog posts, I’m a foodie, especially when it comes to snacks. I’m not great at much, but I am pretty darn good at picking out and packing the right snacks for any sort of occasion. I’m the go-to girl for a good charcuterie board at any party or picnic, and if there was an Olympics competition for snack preparation and eating, then I’d take the gold medal. I constantly am stocking my fridge and cupboards full of them, and always enjoy a trip to Trader Joe’s to find the latest and greatest. Sometimes I tend to go overboard, but hey, life is short - so treat yoself!

Established-California-Becca-Kufrin-Favourite-Things-Food-Snacks

Currently my cupboard is burting with the following:

  1. 5 different flavors of Skinny Dipped Almonds

  2. Everything-flavored cashews

  3. Pumpkin Spice cookies

  4. Red vines

  5. Fig bars

  6. Peanuts

  7. Reese’s

  8. HU chocolate bars

  9. Peanut Butter Puffs

  10. 3 different kinds of peanut butter

  11. Haribo gummy bears

  12. Bark Thins

  13. Perfect Snack bars

  14. Pita bread + hummus

  15. Bitchin sauce

  16. Trader Hint of Lime Chips + salsa

  17. Crackers

  18. 3 flavors of Hippeas

  19. Trader Joe’s gluten free pretzels (so extra crunchy!)

  20. Popcorn

  21. Biscoff cookies

  22. Cheetos (chilled in the freezer)

  23. Cheese - I am a firm believer that a fridge should be stalked with at least 3 different types for any given situation

I’m also probably missing some items here, but you get the jist. I like snacks.

Established-California-Becca-Kufrin-Favourite-Things-Food-Snacks

Here’s one of my favorite and quick, go-to snacks (more like an appetizer) that I like to bring to parties. Meditteranean Hummus Plate:

Established-California-Becca-Kufrin-Meditteranean-Hummus-Plate

A FEW OF MY OTHER FAVORITE THINGS…

Guilty pleasure:

Hallmark movies and spoonfuls of peanut butter

Treat Yo Self:

Spa day, anything that includes a massage + facial

Outfit:

Sweatshirt + leggings + slippers

Girl's Night:

Wine and charcuterie at a tapas bar followed by dinner + cocktails on a fun rooftop. Or basically anything that includes champagne

Go-to snack:

Hippeas or everything-seasoned cashews

Vacation Spot:

Italy, or if local then Santa Barbara

Restaurant:

Elephante in Santa Monica

Coffee:

Iced with a shot of vanilla + oat milk

Ice Cream:

Halo Top - any and all flavors

I never leave home without…

chapstick, hand wipes and Minno

In my purse:

I like to come prepared so I have mints, chapstick, hand sanitizer, an extra face mask, wallet, dog treats, collapsable dog bowl, matches, deck of cards, and wine bottle opener

A perfect Saturday:

A morning walk with Minno, stroll through the local farmer’s market for veggies and snacks, lounging by the pool for an hour or two, and dinner + drinks at a great local spot. Or since it’s fall - visiting a pumpkin patch or apple orchard

A DAY IN THE LIFE... WITH BECCA

This month’s Guest Editor, Becca Kufrin, is giving us a glimpse into a typical day in her new LA life. From morning cuddles with her Corgi, Minno - to sunset cocktails with her besties.

Established-California-Becca-Kufrin-A-Day-In-The-Life

A SNEAK PEAK INTO MY DAILY LIFE IN LOS ANGELES, CA

Contributed by Guest Editor, Becca Kufrin

Well, I have to begin this by acknowledging that quarantine has really cramped my style, especially during a recent move. For someone who is a HUGE foodie and loves to discover new and amazing restaurants, food trucks, cocktail lounges, wine bars, tapas joints, etc. I feel like the true cuisine connoisseur in me hasn’t begun to truly live & thrive in LA. But here’s to hoping for that one day soon. Regardless of this pandemic, I’ve still been able to venture to some amazing outdoor spots and begin to sample all that the city has to offer - it’s like a very long appetizer hour before the main course.

  • am :: wake up and snuggle with my corgi, Minno, for a while. Check any missed texts from the night before then hop out of bed. I always apply some sunscreen and throw on my favorite favorite pair of leggings before dragging Minno out of bed (she really likes to lounge in the morning so sometimes this takes a lot longer than you’d think).

  • 7:45am :: Make a small starter pot of coffee while reading The Skimm and New York Times Newsletters on my balcony.

  • 8:30am :: Get Minno ready then head out the door for our daily a.m. walk. We typically go for a mile or two throughout the cute neighborhood, where I daydream about what it must be like to live in one of the many quaint, charming houses around the block. We make a quick stop at Priscilla's for a large, blueberry vanilla iced coffee and maple nut scone before venturing back home (never venturing the same way we came).

  • 9am :: I like to get a quick workout in before truly starting my work day, so I pop open an IG class or two from @jessicaknutson or head to my parking lot for a virtual session with my trainer @creel_fitness

  • 9:45 am :: make a quick breakfast (fried egg on avo toast), hop in the shower and get ready

  • 10:45am :: catch up on emails, work on building out my calendar for the week, check-off the daily action items, and then set-up/film social content for any brand partnerships that I have scheduled for the week

  • 1:30pm :: take Minno for a quick walk and grab some lunch from either Lemonade (I always opt for the veggie plate of broccoli, curried cauliflower and honey Brussel sprouts) or Tocaya Organica for the Fajita Del Ray Bowl with chicken tinga, and of course, chips & guac on the side.

  • 2:30pm :: Put together a list of groceries so I can try out some fun recipes and make a quick pit stop at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods

  • 3:15pm :: Get back to emails and calls, work on any personal business ventures (more to come about this very soon!) and wind down my work day

  • 4:30pm :: Grab a snack and good book or magazines and sit by my pool for the final few moments of sunshine

  • 5:30pm :: Take Minno on another long walk or to the dog park

  • 6:30pm ::  Turn on my favorite true crime podcast and go for an evening run, all while thinking about what I’ll crush for dinner. Shower & get ready for the night

  • 7:30pm :: Meet up with girlfriends for dinner & drinks. If we are going out for sushi we typically aim for Teru in Studio City - the lemon roll and kanpachi carpaccio are to die for! Or if we want to venture out of the valley for a relaxed, coastal vibe, Elephanté is our go-to for some whipped eggplant puccia and soppressata pizza, which is heaven on the tongue.

  • 9:30pm :: Sometimes if it’s not a school night ;) we’ll head to someone’s backyard for an outdoor movie night (90s throwbacks are our go-to) and some nightcaps, usually a bottle of bubbly because we like to pretend we’re fancy.

MEET BECCA KUFRIN: Host, Entrepreneur and LA's Newest City Girl

MEET BECCA, OUR GUEST EDITOR THIS MONTH!

Former “Bachelorette” Becca Kufrin is hanging with us all month long as she shares what life has been like for her since COVID hit and why she decided to move West to become an official Angeleno. You can say she’s on a new journey for love.. the California kind.

LETTER TO THE READERS:

Hey, all you Est. California Readers!

I’m Becca, but you probably know me best as the Bachelorette (very very former, washed-up Bachelorette, I might add). I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m writing on this site in the first place, considering I’m a mid-west native who spent 28 years in good old, and cold, Minnesota. Well, after wrapping the show 2+ years ago, I decided to make the big move West and call California “my home”.

During that time I fell in love, moved in with my partner near San Diego, got a dog, started a loungewear line, co-hosted a touring theater show across the country, also co-hosted a Bachelor-related podcast, traveled the world, and was constantly on the go, go, go until BAM! COVID hit and shut down the world… thus also shutting down much of the way I was making an income. It forced me to take some time to chill and really reflect on all of my life changes over the past couple years and how truly upside down my life had become.

Since my time in quarantine (Q-time as I like to call it), I ended the above said relationship, stopped touring in the theaters, was forced to podcast from home, and do everything else, basically from the confines of my small apartment. Just when my life started to feel like it was on the verge of falling apart, I went back to Minnesota to take some “me” time, but couldn’t figure out what that really looked like. I dabbled in the idea of settling back down there, maybe buy a home with some land and really put down roots in the midwest, but that didn’t feel right. I’ve always loved California and if you ask me I’ll swear on the Bible that I was originally born in the wrong state, so I knew in my bones that I had to get back out to the west coast.

When I started filming on The Bachelor back in 2017, LA always called to me. Maybe chalk it up to the vibrancy that the city has to offer, the fact that you can drive within an hour or two and be near the ocean, mountains, or vineyards, or that something unique is always happening in any one of the diverse neighborhoods. LA just felt like “me.” So, during a very last-minute FaceTime session with my producer-turned-friend, we threw around the idea of me moving out there alone without any furniture, and within 24 hours I had signed a lease and became an official Angeleno. Only three weeks in and it’s the best sporadic decision I think I’ve ever made.

So here I am, pouring out my heart to you all and truly experiencing all that this city has to offer through virgin eyes. So who’s along for the ride with me?

LET’S GET TO KNOW BECCA..

What song(s) is a “must” for a road trip playlist? Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac and Atlantic City by The Band

If I had a superpower, it would be… to teleport to places

Favorite thing about California? The warmth and sunshine - basically the fact that you can be outdoors at almost anytime of the year and find any sort of activity imaginable

Best thing you ever ate and where? Lomo Saltado in Peru or homemade soups (every kind!) in Paris

What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling? Oh man, this is hard to narrow down, but one of the most fun and meaningful memories made was when I was filming in the Maldives for the Bachelorette. It was the final week of my season and I was down to my two, remaining men that I was falling in love with. The anxiety and pressure that I felt during that time was astronomical because I knew some major, life-altering decisions were about to be made, but we had one semi-chill day before the last dates began. I was with my team of producers and the camera & audio crew (who I formed some really special friendships with) and we were filming some b-roll shots throughout the afternoon. We wrapped early, and instead of parting ways to go to our individual cabanas, we all decided to pop some champagne, play some good music, order room service and jump into the pool in our clothes (the same pool that apparently the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge had shared - NBD!) As we all watched one of the most breathtaking sunsets over the Indian Ocean, it was a moment that I knew I had to savor and would never forget. Moments like that with the crew isn’t typically “allowed” as we don’t get to spend much time outside of working hours together, but after a long season of filming, many tears shed over breakups, and emotions constantly being shared in a dark, confined room, it was a time that we all recognized how much we cared and valued one another on this crazy, shared experience. Shout out to Sam, Caitlin, Ally, Martin, Christina and Dave-O for making it one helluva ride!

What’s next for you? Besides dabbling in a random array of business endeavors like co-hosting the Bachelor Happy Hour Podcast and Bachelor Live on Stage, and working on a loungewear line called B the Label, I’m also in the initial stages of launching something real special soon! More to come on that so follow me on social (see below ;)

What to do:

  1. Cut lemon or lime in half and allow to sit out for about an hour to dry out.

  2. Lay your dishtowel out on a flat surface.

  3. Dab the fruit with fabric paint. Cover the entire surface lightly then go back and add extra paint to the areas you would like to highlight like the rim and the triangular ridges.

  4. Practice a few times on a piece of paper to make sure the pattern looks right.

  5. Press fruit stamp onto your dishtowel.

  6. Hang to dry!

Wash the towels before using and enjoy this bright new summer-filled accent to your kitchen!

This More-Than-A-Decade Old Camp Offers the Wild Isolation We All Need Right Now

Sturtevant Camp, just north of L.A., gets you off the grid and socially distanced from everyone except the deer. This 4-mile hike-in camp is over a decade old and completely run by volunteers. If you are looking to disconnect in nature, this is the perfect adventure for you.

A SPOTLIGHT ON THE HISTORIC STURTEVANT CAMP

Contributed by Kelsey Pegher

The trip to the local mountains seemed doomed from the start. COVID-19 cases in California were on the rise. Testing requirements had changed from anyone with or without symptoms to those most at risk. Then there was a fire at the trailhead that temporarily shut the area mere days before our 4-mile hike in. Going to camp in the San Gabriel Mountains wasn’t going to be easy.

I got the idea after a previous long hike to Sturtevant Falls in the Angeles National Forest in late May. I emerged feeling refreshed. We didn’t have cell service the entire hike. We wore masks during the hike and ate sandwiches by the falls at a safe distance from everyone. We stopped at the local mule-pack station on our way out and asked about the cabins dotted along our trail. Could people rent those?

No, but there is a camp with cabins where you could spend the night, the helpful woman behind the counter replied. After we left the trail and drove down Santa Anita Canyon toward the city, toward cellphone service and emails and a steady stream of notifications, I was ready to plan my next escape.

The more-than-a-century-old camp

Sturtevant Camp looked like a typical sleep-away camp, according to the online photos. There’s a lodge with a cafeteria and cabins with twin bunk beds. It was founded in 1893 and eventually sold to a Methodist church association, which ran the camp until 2011. Now it’s run by volunteers with the Sturtevant Conservancy, said board member Deb Burgess, who runs the board.

The bliss upon arriving was like none other. There’s absolutely no cell service near Sturtevant Camp. There’s a small nature trail that leads to a helipad overlooking the canyon. If we were truly the hiking type, we could have used our Saturday to hike to Mt. Wilson or Mt. Zion.

Instead, we spent our time mostly luxuriating in the quiet. We watched young bucks and fawns come right through the camp, unbothered by our presence. We walked down to the creek and counted butterflies. We tried our hand at archery and played card games.

Photos inside the lodge show black-and-white images going as far back as women wearing prairie dresses. In that way, it was not like a typical sleep-away camp. Sturtevant Camp was founded 12 years prior to the founding of the Forest Service. In the early half of the 20th century, Angelenos would stay for the entire summer as their big getaway.

Just a half-hour from downtown Los Angeles, Big Santa Anita Canyon remains a reprieve for many. Day hikes to Sturtevant Falls and Hermit Falls are popular even on weekdays, with an often overflowing parking lot at Chantry Flat. (During the pandemic, hikers are turned away when the lot fills.)

In 2015, Burgess purchased the camp for “a whopping $25,000.” With a small team, she and others spent months painting and making repairs to the camp and formed a nonprofit organization to run it. “Until COVID happened, it [was] not unusual for that camp to be completely full,” Burgess said.

How the pandemic changed camp

Like everything else, the camp was closed through April and May. In the last two months, volunteers worked toward a slow reopening, with just a couple of cabins in rotation and more rigorous cleaning measures.

The lodge, typically open to any hikers passing through for coffee and water, now is closed to passers-by. People usually first encounter Sturtevant Camp on a day hike and then follow up by booking a spot. “We just want to keep Sturtevant Camp alive,” Burgess said.

I planned the trip with friends at the end of May, when cases were trending downward and it looked like the city was gearing up to reopen by July 4. As the trip came closer, and cases began to rise, we started making compromises and rationalizations. Could everyone get tested the week before? Could everyone isolate themselves as much as humanly possible prior to seeing each other? What precautions could we take to ensure we could remain socially distanced — aside from sleeping?

Then I learned the Forest Service was closing down the Chantry Flat trailhead because of a small fire. How would we get there? I sent several panicked emails to our volunteer counselor, who assured me we would be allowed in the canyon because of our reservation.

Finally it was time to go. I prepared our meals and packed them in bags. The day before, we dropped everything off at Adams’ Pack Station. Burgess said Sturtevant Camp is the No. 1 revenue driver for the last remaining mule-pack station in L.A. County. On Fridays, mules make the slow climb to camp loaded down with groceries, gear or duffel bags. The pack station charges $1 per pound, as it has for more than 100 years.

Then it was time to go. The hike to Sturtevant Camp can be deceiving. The fire road at the start of Chantry Flat slopes downward, giving a false sense of hope that the hike is long but not challenging. Though the website noted it is a difficult hike, it also said even small children can make it. “Maybe kids in California,” a friend quipped as we made our first ascent.

The views nearly made up for the grueling climb.

“It’s one of the very, very few canyons in the Angeles [area] that has a really nice canopy and has water running through it. It’s a beautiful place, nearly 10 degrees or plus cooler than Sierra Madre,” Burgess said.

The last half-mile is the most unforgiving, with switchbacks and a near-constant climb up to an elevation of 3,200 feet. When I arrived at the final sign — with Sturtevant Camp 1/10 of a mile away, out of water and out of breath — I nearly gave up.

Burgess called the last mile a tease. “The sign says it’s a half-mile — it’s a mile.”

Once we arrived, we were met by a volunteer camp counselor who takes care of the property on weekends. Electricity comes on every evening from 5 p.m. till dusk, and refrigerators run on propane. We were able to keep our distance from the other couple staying at the camp, and we used separate bathrooms to keep risks low.

Our two nights passed quickly by the fire. Our volunteer camp counselor, Teah Vaughn, spent much of the weekend working through a to-do list of items to repair or check on around the camp. She also found time to bake cookies and brownies after dinner and made breakfast pastries in the morning.

“There’s something special about the fact it hasn’t changed much in almost 130 years of folks being there,” she said. “There’s a lot of hard, dirty work that goes into maintaining a very old, off-grid camp, but there’s never any complaints.”

Later, Vaughn said she realized our weekend trip was her one-year anniversary as a volunteer counselor. Though the volunteer counselors don’t often see one another, they do all share one cabin. Vaughn described different pairs of hiking boots under the bed and extra jackets from other counselors.

“There is something so unique but so familiar in the whole experience, and I can’t imagine not being a part of it.”

When The Times wrote about Sturtevant Camp in 1986, the location boasted many of the same amenities that exist today, including its biggest draw: seclusion.

“The adults really know how to enjoy it — there are no phones up there, no way for them to be bugged,” Gary Keene, a Methodist minister who worked at the camp from the late 1970s through the mid-’80s, said in the piece.

The appeal of seclusion

More than 30 years later, I could relate. The relentless barrage of news notifications on my phone over the last four months left me tired and burnt out. The seclusion was the biggest and only motivation for planning the trip in the first place.

Because of the fire a week prior, the canyon was closed to everyone except for cabin owners. There are just 81 cabins, built at the turn of the 20th century, which have a laundry list of requirements for the owners. One such requirement is that owners cannot reside there year-round. The few people we ran into warily asked how we got into the canyon. Without the steady stream of day hikers, the canyon felt more like the wilderness than the woods.

On Sunday, refreshed from the silence, we retraced our steps to head out. It felt like seeing the journey for the first time. As we made it down to the little dams that are part of many day hikes in the canyon, we heard a rustle in the bushes.

A small brown bear climbed out. We made our presence known, and rather than running away, the bear took a dip in the creek. It took its time, and eventually climbed up the sloped mountain. I had never seen a bear in my life, let alone one a mere 40 feet away from me. Rather than fear, I was in awe.

I don’t think I’ll ever become much of a true camper. The idea of carrying a tent with me and sleeping on the ground has never been appealing. When my parents sent me to a two-week sleep-away camp as a child in Pennsylvania, I wrote daily letters filled with grievances.

But in a time period of deep uncertainty, where renting an Airbnb or going to a hotel room feels unsafe, a cabin in the woods was enough.

How to go

You can book a trip to Sturtevant Camp at its website: sturtevantcamp.com. We stayed in the Retreat Cabin, which sleeps up to six and costs $270 per night. The honeymoon cottage for two runs $90 per night, and guest cabins that sleep up to eight are $320 per night. You’ll find a pack list of what you need to bring, directions to the trail head and other information.

What is "Established California"?

Ah the golden state, good ‘ol California. You’ve seen the commercials to come visit. You’ve heard stories about the people who moved here to chase their dreams.  But somewhere along the way, someone told you Californians were weird. They play on the beach all day, eat kale and bleed money. And we’re willing to say you’re right...

ESTABLISHED-CALIFORNIA: THE-GOLDEN-STATE-OF MIND

Ah the golden state, good ‘ol California. You’ve seen the commercials to come visit. You’ve heard stories about the people who moved here to chase their dreams. And you may have even at one point entertained the idea of living here yourself. But somewhere along the way, someone told you Californians were weird. They play on the beach all day, eat kale and bleed money. Who in their right mind would want to live in California?

And we’re willing to say you’re right, California is exactly what you think it is: Rich, beautiful and entitled.

We are rich, in people. We are rich with culture, diversity and unique lifestyles. The people here are not afraid to be themselves. And that darling, that is priceless.

We are beautiful, in mind, body and spirit. We take care of our bodies, both mentally and physically. We love each other and ourselves. We appreciate what it means to eat well. We feed our minds with knowledge and technology.

We are entitled. Oh we are so entitled. Be it ocean waves, snow caped mountains, or miles of forest, the scenery is beautiful. And there is something beautiful about a place that truly recognizes their great gift.

So you might find yourself asking, where is this going? Is this an ode to California? No. This is letting you in on our little secret, the golden state of mind. At Established California we are all about community, pursuing your passions and embracing your fears. And the funny thing is you don’t have to have a California zip code to live like that. See California isn’t just a physical place, but a state of mind. So how does one achieve this? Check out our tips to live the golden state of mind.

Be-Established-California-Three-Girls

BE ESTABLISHED

Know yourself, know who you are, know what you want. Be confident in the things that make you, you! Own them, love them and embrace them. There is only one you out there, so be the best version of yourself. Knowing your truth and having the courage to live it and speak it is one of the greatest gifts of life. Being established in your life and who you want to be opens you up to receive what the universe has in store.

Established-California-Seek-ADventure-Road-Trip

SEEK ADVENTURES

Get out there and live adventurously. Try something new, push yourself one step further, get in the last word, and make one last attempt. Each individual defines ‘adventure’ differently. There are no two adventures that are the same. So ask yourself what your adventure looks like. Find what your personal journey is and don’t be afraid to live it.

Established-California-Have-Passion-Couple-love

HAVE PASSION

Live each moment with intent, be passionate about everything you do. Never follow the crowd or live to please anyone other than yourself. Have a thirst and craving for life while staying thankful. Be passionate in love and loss. Do not be afraid to feel life’s emotions. And feel each of them with the utmost passion possible.

Established-California-Snowy-Mountain

CHALLENGE FEAR

Fear can be one of life’s biggest enemies. The victory of challenging and overcoming fear can be one of life’s greatest rewards. To challenge in life provides a secret gift from the universe for the feeling of accomplishment far exceeds the feeling of fear.  Don’t succumb to the initial fear of the unknown, conquer it, challenge it. For when you challenge life’s moments, the gift of triumph is plentiful.

Established-California-Friends-Road-Trip-selfie

LOVE LIFE. LIVE CALIFORNIA

A life can only be as full as you allow it.  So fill it up and love it, nurture it and stay humble. To love the life you lead feeds the soul and gives hope.  Standing with a grateful heart and treating each moment with grace and honestly can lead you to the life you’ve always wanted; a life that is full and at it’s core, happy.

To Live California is to embrace each of these traits, for that is what makes the golden state of mind so beautiful. And when you know what your version of California is, you can pass the gift to others. And to teach, that is the most rewarding gift of all.

#ESTCALIFORNIA

So there you have it, a guideline if you will. And what you do with this knowledge, how you share it that is up to you. At Established California we offer you a community.  A community where minds that are both similar and different come together with respect and appreciation for the other. A place to be creative; be it through food, music, fashion, design or celebration. Where you can share with others your version of California and the golden state of mind in which you live. The zip code is not a requirement.

Let us leave you with this challenge:  wander, question, respect, accept, thank, love, laugh, cry, and above all else,

Be Established. Love Life. Live California

EST. SPOTLIGHT: PLASTIC TIDES (VIDEO)

Living in California, I'm proud of our state and the community of people living in it, for really pushing awareness and action about single-use plastics. We've enforced laws throughout the state about reusable bags in grocery stores and encourage use of reusable water bottles in our airports, restaurants and more.

Living in California, I'm proud of our state and the community of people living in it, for really pushing awareness and action about single-use plastics. We've enforced laws throughout the state about reusable bags in grocery stores and encourage use of reusable water bottles in our airports, restaurants and more. But, the problem is long from being solved so when I heard about Plastic Tides, I knew it was something to be shared.

Plastic Tides is a non-profit comprised of four dedicated adventure conservationists with the common goal of exposing our society's plastic problem. Their adventure began when co-founders, Christian Shaw and Gordon Middleton joined forces to address this major issue. Their passion for adventure and extreme sports only fueled their passion to keep their playgrounds clean. Living solely on stand-up paddleboards, the Plastic Tides team venture into remote locations around the world to raise awareness through novel means. Their expeditions give a unique opportunity for the documentation of our planet's beauty and the rampant plastic pollution that threatens it. Combining adventure and hard science, their approach brings fresh awareness to this serious problem.

Established-California-Plastic-Tides-awareness-Sunset

"Our throw-away culture depends on single-use plastics. Stop reading this and look up: Is there any plastic around you? Water bottles, plastic utensils, yogurt containers, the infamous six pack rings..  these are just a few of many plastic products. Much of this plastic waste doesn’t make it to the recycling center, or even to the landfill. Plastic pollution is carried by rivers, animals, and the wind, eventually finding its way into the sea."

Established-California-Plastic-Tides-awareness-Waste

"In the ocean, indigestible plastic waste resembles dinner for many marine organisms. Working its way up the food chain, plastic may even end up on your plate next time you order the Fish of the Day. Its tendency to host a variety of toxic chemicals like BPA and PCBs, leads to bioaccumalation farther up the food chain, meaning that we are potentially poisoning ourselves."

Established-California-Plastic-Tides-awareness-Paddle-Board

Plastic Tides: Bermuda

The team recently returned from their first expedition that took Christian, Gordon, Celine and Julian around the beautiful island of Bermuda, via stand-up paddleboards, over the course of 11 days. They successfully collected surface plastic samples and microplastic samples to analyze the samples to see what concentrations were found. On a macro level, the team was saddened to report an immense concentration of plastic debris. It is clear that the problem is knocking at our doorstep and it's important to raise awareness to the public to come together to make a change.

Stay tuned for the result of their sampling via plastictides.org and keep an eye out for new webisodes of their expeditions on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/plastictides.

We asked the team to recall one of their days traveling along the shores of Bermuda. This is what they had to share:

DAY IN THE LIFE

7:00 — Captain Williams Bay. The team is sound asleep in their tents.

7:15 — Gordon's alarm goes off. He wakes up and proceeds to sing pirate shanties at Christian and Celine until they wake up. We start getting coffee and breakfast ready which means firing up the denatured alcohol cat-food-can stove (an invention of Gordon's father, one gallon of denature alcohol lasted 4 people 11 days with extra!) to boil water. We boiled extra water to have in our Klean Kanteen insulated thermos's for making food throughout the day. Julian is still asleep.

7:30 — Julian is still asleep

7:45 — Julian is still asleep and snoring in wildebeest mode.

8:00 — The whole team is up and eating a breakfast of Backpackers Pantry granola with banana's and milk, coffee, and CLIF bars. The route for the day is discussed over breakfast.

8:30-9:30 — We all change out of our Buddha Pants and into our expedition clothes for the day then pack our things into various dry bags and cases. Packing was always a chore because of the sheer quantity of gear. It was typically an hour or more before all the gear was strapped down to the boards.

10:00 — Before launching we used an old glass bottle we found on the beach to take a water sample from the bay. It will be analyzed by Abbey Barrows of MERI in Blue Hole, ME for the presence of micro-plastics as part of a program through Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation.

10:30 — We push off on a rising tide as to avoid shallow jagged rocks that line the bay. We have a southwest tailwind and are looking to cover a lot of ground. The plan is to make the rest of the south coast with the wind and camp on Charles Island.

11:30 — After over an hour of dodging through the patchy reef line that guards the south shore we paddled over a mile offshore to take lunch well away form the treacherous coast. Lunch on the ocean isn't too hard when you have dehydrated food, hot water, and a strong tailwind to keep you moving in the right direction whilst eating.

12:30-16:30 — An hour of drifting gave us a good lead, but we got back to paddling as we were pushed towards shore. During the next few hours we took advantage of the tailwind to pull a trawl to sample for surface plastics. Our custom trawl was built for us by our collaborators at the Plastic Ocean Project and was specially designed for use behind a paddleboard.

17:00 — We near the north end of Bermuda and the Islands that occupy the entrance to castle harbor come into view. This end of the island is know for wrecks, most of which are marked with big white mooring balls. At this time, Celine decides she is too tired to keep paddling and she wants to try out her ENO hammock as a sail. Let's just say it was quite a spectacle that did not involve much sailing!

17:30 - Paddling into Castle Harbor is amazing as Castle Island, aptly named for it's 18th Century ruins, comes into view.

18:30 - After a swim and some cliff jumping off Castle Island we make berth on Charles Island for the night.

19:00 - There is a lot to do as we set camp and get down to preparing dinner for a hungry crew. The evening was always a time for taking care of gear, especially getting the cameras ready to go for the next day. We use solar power throughout the day to charge our batteries and keep our memory cards on rotation.

23:00 - After eagerly exploring the island and getting some amazing photos in the moonlight the team is off to bed for the night, except for Gordon, who is always up doing social media way past his bed-time.
