WORK OUT LIKE A LOCAL: SAN FRANCISCO
In a city where everyone walks, and there are hills.. lots of hills.. everywhere,... it's no surprise that SFers love taking their workouts outside. We believe that to really get a feel of a new place you're traveling to, you have to run up and down its hills, bike down its roads, and Downward Dog where the locals do.
So the next time you're in San Francisco, get out of that stuffy hotel gym and try one of our fitness faves.
Buena Vista Park
Since Buena Vista Park (Haight Street and Buena Vista East) is an easy two-block walk from my house, I have no excuse to ever skip a workout. Located in the famed Haight-Ashbury district, Buena Vista is San Francisco's oldest park; it boasts spectacular views and feels a bit like a forest escape in the middle of the city. On days where I really need to move, I like to run up and down the park's stairs for a good hour and finish it off with a mini strength-training circuit at the top.
Whether you decide to take one of the many staircases or dirt trails, make sure to stop at the vista points along the way to the top. After making it to the hill's peak — 575 feet! — enjoy the view of the city before heading back down. And don't overlook the park's perimeter; if you're a fan of Hitchcock's Vertigo, then one of the buildings will look especially familiar. There's also a great example of a Cass Calder Smith modernist home.
The Panhandle
I'm partial to the Panhandle (Fell Street and Baker Street) because it's close to my house and makes a convenient running or cycling loop. A long, skinny park that juts out of the much larger Golden Gate Park, it's just the right size for an easy jog or interval training. One loop of the Panhandle is about 1.5 miles, so I usually jog a few times around or continue into Golden Gate Park for more variation. Depending on when you go, you'll be working out with locals who use the park as their pre- or post-work exercise spot, so it's a great place to people-watch while burning calories.
Planet Granite
Planet Granite (924 Mason St., 415-692-3434) boasts 25,000 square feet of climbing and bouldering, weight and cardio areas, and two yoga studios (many of the teachers are regular instructors at places like Aha Yoga and Yoga Tree and have trained under yoga greats like Ana Forrest and Rusty Wells). It's situated right across the street from Crissy Field, and there's nothing like climbing up a 50-foot wall and looking out the window to see the Golden Gate Bridge staring back at you. Day passes run $19 and give you full access to the gym and all its classes.
Lyon Street Steps
For a challenging outdoor workout, head to the Lyon Street Steps. Start at the corner of Lyon and Green, and head up the 288 steep steps all the way to Broadway and back. There's beautiful greenery all around, you can check some of San Francisco's most beautiful homes, and the view from the top is well worth the climb.
Bernal Heights Hill
Hiking to the top of Bernal Heights Hill (Bernal Heights Boulevard) at dusk was one of my first treks in the city with friends. As if you can't tell from this photo, there's a seriously gorgeous view of the whole city! There's a great bike path, plenty of room to sit and enjoy a sunset, and a million dogs running around. If you're down in the Mission, then you've got to check out this view. Hopefully you'll get to go on a day like the one pictured, where the fog isn't rolling in too deep.

WORK OUT LIKE A LOCAL: LOS ANGELES
Fitness is front and center as part of Los Angeles' draw. There's no shortage of juice bars to satiate your thirst, yoga studios to get your Downward Dog on, or running paths to help you hit the road. And if it's the latest fitness trend you're seeking, it's got that too.

Runyon Canyon
If you want to see where the locals go, then make sure you hit Runyon Canyon (2001 North Fuller Ave.) during your stay. From a leisurely dog walk to an intense 5-mile run up and down the trail, there's something here for everyone — including free yoga classes every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. With great views offered at the top, make sure you've got a stash of water on you since the canyon offers little in the way of shade.
YogaWorks
A favorite amongst our LA-based editors, YogaWorks (multiple locations) offers a wide variety of yoga and Pilates classes for the beginner to the advanced. But even if an intense Vinyasa flow is not calling to you, look to one of the non-yoga offerings (DanceWorks, BarWorks, and SculptWorks) to captivate your interest.
Santa Monica
With a perfect seaside location, there's little that can't be done in Santa Monica, making it a one-stop dream for the fitness fanatic. Bike rentals are readily available near the Santa Monica Pier, or join the locals for a run (if you're feeling really adventurous, take The Strand, a 25-mile paved bike path that runs along the coast from Pacific Palisades to Redondo Beach). While cruising down the coast, make sure to stop off at Muscle Beach (just south of the pier) for a back-to-basics workout in the gymnastics training area. But if it's a stretch you're needing, hit up local studio faves, Hustle & Flow (2321 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291) or Hot 8 Yoga (1422 Second St., 310-866-5280). And no visit to the area is quite complete without a visit up and down the Santa Monica Stairs (4th St. and Adelaide Dr.)!
YAS Fitness Centers
These hybrid yoga and spinning classes at at YAS (locations in downtown LA and Silverlake) burn calories and strengthen muscles, but don't look for any quiet reflective-style yoga when coming here. One of the most popular classes ($18) at YAS offers students 30 minutes of heart-pounding cardio on the spin bike before 30 minutes of "yoga for athletes," which we like because it helps warm up the muscles for a deeper stretch.
Box N' Burn
Get ready to SWEAT! This bootcamp style work out is great at mixing cardio, toning and taking out some aggression! ;) Box n Burn was started by Olympian Bronze Medalist, Tony Jeffrees and certified trainer, Kevan Watson, the two have taken this boxing community to new levels and started a gym that Los Angeles was desperately missing. Don't be afraid to jump in the ring with these guys.. they'll be easy on you.. kind of.
Groov3
Now here's a class that will leave you feeling so energized and full of laughter! The Groov3 Movement is happening all over Los Angeles at local dance studios but the thing we love MOST is the rooftop series that happens on top of the Montalban Theater in Hollywood. The party starts June 9th at 7pm and you can not miss out!

THE TREND: LUMBERJACK + LEOPARD
One thing I have started experimenting with more during this past year is mixing prints. For anyone who is slightly terrifying of incorrectly mixing prints, start small. Try this easy look of Lumberjack + Leopard!!
Photography by: Erin Bilanow
One thing I have started experimenting with more during this past year is mixing prints. I don’t feel as intimidated by the thought of pairing different patterns together. For me personally, I try to have a neutral backdrop to showcase my paired prints. For this particular day, an all black outfit made the perfect canvas for a pop of color in the form of a lumberjack infinity scarf and a hint of leopard print in my strappy heels. Try to have your prints compliment each other and not overwhelm you as an individual.
For anyone who is slightly terrifying of incorrectly mixing prints, start small. Don’t go bold all at once, get comfortable with a dash of one print subtly paired with another. As you get comfortable, slowly develop into patterned pants and patterned scarf. Just be sure that they have the same color undertones and aren’t completely contrasting.
Happy mixing!

As much as I love the black bedroom look, I am equally an admirer of the white bedroom look. It's just as glamorous (in my opinion) and right now I am crushing on designer,Tompkins Lloyd. This bedroom might just be my favorite. It's a little bit French and a little bit contemporary modern. A little bit vintage and a little bit new. I always enjoy a well executed mix.
With all of the hide and fur action going on in this room, it takes the starkness up a notch and gives the element of cozy warmth. Fur can really do so much for a space. I also really love the vintage brown leather lounger paired with acrylic nesting tables. Something about that contrast looks really chic to me.
I did a bit of sourcing and found a few beautiful things that could give your bedroom this chic look.
Contemporary bed | French gilt mirror | acrylic nesting tables | modern white dresser |white mongolian bench | 1970's leather lounger | square stitched hide rug | orchid arrangements | bronze task lamp | Kelly Wearstler book HUE | No 5 Culture book | french riviera book |

Nanga Sports is a fitness fashion brand from Rio de Janeiro – Brazil, created by climber/designer Mila Itagiba through her passion for sports and healthy living.
The name Nanga was inspired by one of the highest and most climbed mountains in the world, Nanga Parbat, located in the Himalayas.

The ideas are born of colors, art, nature... and it is precisely these details, together with quality material that make Nanga a unique brand.

GET SWEATY: A POST-COACHELLA DETOX WORKOUT
Had a little too much fun at Coachella this past weekend? Having a hard time getting back into your normal routine? Well, hop on your yoga mat, and do these eight poses designed to detox the body.
Had a little too much fun at Coachella this past weekend? Having a hard time getting back into your normal routine? Well, hop on your yoga mat, and do these eight poses designed to detox the body. These poses stimulate your circulatory, digestive and lymphatic systems so pick out the poses your body needs (or practice them all) and you're on your way to feeling like a new you.
1. Wide-Legged Forward Bend
Not only a great pose for opening tight hamstrings, allowing your head to fall below your heart in Wide-Legged Forward Bend also reverses the pull of gravity, encouraging circulation of blood throughout the body as well as fluid to your filtering lymph nodes. The folding motion also squeezes the belly, which moves things along for digestion.
- Stand with your feet four or so feet apart, heels turned out slightly wider than the toes. Standing tall, interlace your hands behind you, pressing the heels of your palms together in a double fist.
- Take a deep breath in, and slowly fold forward at the waist, lowering your hands as far as you can. Keep the spine long and straight as you breathe for five deep breaths. Engage your legs, and slowly rise up to stand.
2. Open Side Fence
If you want to strengthen your lower legs, Open Side Fierce will have your quads and glutes burning. This deep twist also aids in digestion. You'll feel the gentle pressure on your kidneys, liver, and spleen, which stimulates the removal of waste.
- Stand with both feet together, bend your knees, and squat down, coming into Fierce Pose. Cross your right elbow over your left thigh, planting your right palm on the floor beside your left foot. If you can't reach all the way, just allow your fingers to hover in the air, as close to the floor as possible.
- Extend your left arm straight up toward the ceiling, stacking your shoulders, and gaze at your lifted palm. Make sure both knees are parallel. Hold for five deep breaths.
- Press into your feet, inhale to rise back up to Fierce, and exhale to repeat this pose on the right side, holding for another five breaths. Then rise back up to Fierce Pose, and straighten the legs.
3. Three Legged Down Dog
Holding your head below your heart and your leg lifted in the air in this variation of Down Dog encourages blood to circulate throughout the body, as well as move fluid to the lymph nodes. If your upper body is strong, this pose can also be very relaxing, which aids in mental detox as well, releasing stress, fear, and sadness.
- Come onto your hands and knees, so your hands are shoulder-width distance apart, with your knees directly below each hip. Tuck your toes and straighten your legs, coming into Downward Facing Dog.
- Keeping your shoulders parallel with the floor, step both feet together and raise your right leg into the air. After five deep breaths, lower the leg and repeat this pose with the left leg lifted.
4. Seated Heart Opener
Poor posture can stifle proper lung function, and doing this Seated Heart Opener encourages lengthening of the spine so your lungs can fully expand and contract with each breath. Healthy, deep breathing encourages the body to eliminate carbon dioxide, lactic acid, lymphatic fluid, and other wastes.
- Begin seated on your shins.
- Interlace your hands behind you in a double fist, pressing the heels of your palms together. Pull your pressed palms toward the floor, opening through the chest and shoulders.
- After five breaths, release your hands.
5. Seated Spinal Twist
Twisting poses are all about aiding in digestion, which encourages the elimination of wastes. Take this Seated Spinal Twist as deeply as you want to go.
- Begin seated on your mat with your legs extended in front of you. Bend both knees, and place your left heel as close to your right sit bone as you can. Cross your right foot over your left knee, and plant it on the floor so your outer right ankle is next to your left knee.
- Reach your right arm behind you, and place your palm on the floor. Cross your left elbow over your outer right thigh to gently increase the twist.
- Gaze behind you and over your right shoulder, staying here for five breaths. Then release the twist, straighten your legs out in front of you, and do this pose with your left knee pointing up.
6. Head to Knee C
As bizarre as this pose looks, folding forward over your heel in this variation of Head to Knee Pose is meant to gently massage and stimulate your inner organs.
- Begin in a seated position with both legs straight out in front of you.
- Bend your right knee, and hold your right foot with your left hand. Bring your right arm under your right leg, and reach around to grab on to the arch with your right hand.
- Pull your right toes down gently, and place the sole of your right foot against your left inner thigh so your right heel is pointing up.
- Lengthen through the spine, and fold your torso over your left leg. Place your hands on the floor on either side of your leg or on your shin. If your hamstrings and hips are more flexible, reach for your foot — the right hand holds the left wrist.
- Rest your forehead on your leg, and stay here for five breaths. Continue lengthening the spine as you relax the shoulders away from your ears.
- Then release your hands, sit up, and switch sides.
7. Locust
This pose strengthens the back of the body, but the pressure on your abdomen also encourages digestion.
- Lie on your belly with your legs together. Place your arms by your sides with your palms facing up.
- As you inhale, lift your legs, head, and upper body off the floor. Your hands remain on the floor for support.
- As you breathe, relax your shoulders and the muscles in your bum. Extend the crown of your head away from your toes, lengthening as much as you can through your spine.
- Hold for five breaths, and then release back to the mat.
8. Bound Headstand
Another pose where your heart is above your head, Headstand removes toxins in the circulatory and lymphatic systems. This is also a pose that's typically held for 10 breaths or longer, and focusing on deep breaths clears out carbon dioxide from the lungs.
- If you're new to this pose, sit facing a wall. Place your clasped fingers and head on the floor about eight inches or so away from the wall.
- Straighten your legs, and walk your feet toward your head. Bend one knee, and tuck it into your chest. Using your abs and hamstring flexibility, lift your other leg off the floor so both knees are tucked into your chest, in a pose called Bound Headstand Prep: Tuck.
- With complete control, slowly lift and straighten both legs up, coming into Bound Headstand. If balancing is hard, bend one knee and place the sole of your foot on the wall.
- Hold for five, 10, or more breaths. Then slowly bend your knees into your chest, lower your feet to the floor, and rest in Child's Pose.

Metta8 Conscious Designs is a handmade jewelry line, infused with with intention & healing energy. Made with only the finest metals & natural gemstones, each piece comes with a positive affirmation and is packaged in eco-friendly packaging. The Metta8 mission is to change the world one person at a time, one piece at a time. We sat down with Priscilla, owner and designer, to talk a bit more about what keeps her inspired, her mantra and why she loves living in California.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I have been most inspired by the people who say I've helped or inspired them in some way, shape or form. It has really reaffirmed that I am on purpose & following my divine path.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
Being in alignment with my purpose aka doing what I Love for a living & using my gifts to create for the world everyday. It took me awhile to figure out, but I'm truly fed when I am being the Conscious Creator I was put on this Earth to be.
Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
Acknowledge what your gifts are & really take in what people tell you your amazing at, then keep doing whatever that is! Believe in yourself even when the naysayers seem louder than the supporters.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Oh man, a lot! But basically 5 key things:
1. Drive safe-(I've been in more accidents than I ever cared to have!)
2. Never be afraid to be fully yourself...you already are enough & you're perfect! Let your light shine.
3. Follow your heart & your inspiration & make every decision based from a place of love.
4. Your body is a temple & you only get one. Honor & respect yourself & your body.
5. You think you know...but you have NO idea!!! Don't worry about the future or the past. Just BE you...don't water yourself down or try to be like anyone else. Because the more you try to play small or be like someone else, the longer it'll take to find yourself.
What do you love most about California?
I love the ocean & the salty air! Living on the coast has been my life's dream. It is my sanctuary, my inspiration & my peaceful place.
What was the defining moment you knew you wanted to create Metta 8?
Having a successful yoga business named MettaYoga in Texas & finishing my BFA in Metals in 2011, I knew I wanted to create a line of jewelry For my thesis that embodied the energy & healing I had learned & found through my 10 years of teaching. I wanted to share this jewelry with the world & make pieces that were not only beautiful adornments but also powerful conduits to healing, manifesting, balancing, etc... These pieces are the anchor people can use to remind them of their own power as a spiritual being having a human experience.
What's on your current playlist?
Music plays a huge part in my creative process. Always in rotation are Jim James, My Morning Jacket & Andrew Bird. Recently I've been heavily into Ben Howard, Glass Animals, Wild Beasts & anything Justin Vernon has a hand in, he's brilliant. Along w/ Dr. Dog, Explosions in the Sky, Future Islands. And always in the cue is Miles Davis' Kind of Blue! The list goes on & on. I don't really get stuck on one thing for too long.
Current Mantra?
"Be the flow. Live in the know." & "I Am."
THE TREND: MAXI SKIRTS
Maxi skirts are the absolute perfect wardrobe item for any wardrobe (but especially in San Francisco). We're chatting about our favorite reasons this staple items needs to be in your wardrobe.
Maxi skirts are the absolute perfect wardrobe item for San Francisco. On those rare days when it hits the high 70s here...that means sundresses, skirts, picnics and bocce ball.
The tricky part about dressing for warm weather in San Francisco is that the fog inevitably rolls in and the wind picks up. That’s where the maxi skirt (or dress) comes in. Due to it’s length, the maxi helps keep my legs warm as the chilly evening weather comes in, but still maintains its warm weather feel. And even better, depending on the waist band, a maxi skirt can also also double as a maxi or midi dress. This adds a depth of versatility to my closet and helps me creatively extend the life of items in my closet.
I admit, I will always gravitate to a maxi skirt or dress for a warm weather brunch or picnic. But then again, that's because I know that our signature cooler weather, will be arriving shortly.

NORTHWOOD: HANDCRAFTED WITH LOVE
We think it's so special when we find artisans who use their hands to create beautiful and unique items. Add the fact that they are creating sustainable fashions that are eco-friendly and of course we have to share with you!
We think it's so special when we find artisans who use their hands to create beautiful and unique items. Add the fact that they are creating sustainable fashions that are eco-friendly and of course we have to share with you! We chatted with Elizabeth & Allen of Northwood Bentwood Rings to share a little bit more about their rings, their process and how they are different.
Tell us about your company and how you got started?
Northwood Bentwood Rings makes wooden rings from the bentwood technique. We are focused on using only eco-friendly and sustainable sources for our products, from the wood itself to the precious metals, and stone inlays that we use. Most recently we have branched out to include a mix of reclaimed gold or silver bands along with a wooden outer wrap.
We began in 2012, when my husband Allan presented me with my first wooden ring. We had been married 3 years and I hadn’t been able to wear a wedding band due to an allergy to gold. Having grown up on a farm called ‘Lot of Oaks’ the oak tree had always held a very special meaning for me. It was from Oak that my first ring was created, and I was in love with the uniqueness of my ring immediately. Allan, being the craftsman he is, didn’t stop there. He was in pursuit of the best wooden ring he could make, so I soon found myself with a whole lot of wooden wedding rings to choose from!
At the time we had been running a weekend coffee cart with freshly roasted coffee, another of our passions. Customers began coming for the rings as much as they did for the coffee and we saw a way to fill a need. We had heard so many stories of people not being able, or not wanting, to wear traditional jewelry, and we decided to close up the coffee cart and begin our adventure in serving this new crowd of people looking for something different.
What makes your company unique?
While wooden rings and the process of bentwood are unique in themselves, I think the most unique thing about our company is not what we do, but why we do it. We want to create a difference in our customers’ lives, our employees’ lives, and in our own. We have always strived to create not just the most beautiful rings, but also a community of artists and people with the same values. We believe that we can work together to create something different: A new way of living sustainably and showing our love for each other, and the environment, in a natural way.
That the jewelry trade that has been built on the backs of slave laborers and atrocious practices is becoming more and more well known, and I believe that it is up to us to stop the demand for these products. We believe there is a better way, and we know there are many others like us who believe in a future where these practices are stopped and where we know about how our products have come to be. We believe in transparency and in protecting the beautiful world, and its people, with safe, friendly practices.
We’re doing our best by creating the most beautiful product we can with friendly materials, and by providing a more unique and one-of-a-kind alternative that lovers and friends can use to express their feelings for their loved ones.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Allan and I have both had a lot of people throughout our lives that have inspired us, not least of which have been our customers and our employees, but to give a more straightforward answer:
For Allan, it has been the master craftsmen of the past. People like the metalsmiths who would spend days creating a simple weathervane that would be used on top of a barn roof, making sure every detail was perfect, and every curve was just as it should be even though it wouldn’t be viewed except from below. Their pride in their work was unwavering and always drove them to be at their best.
For myself, it was my grandfather. The man who built and cared for the farm that inspired our beginning. Before I was in school with my siblings I would spend the day with my grandfather while my mother went off to work. He was an inventor with a large workshop full of tools and I spent my days with him in that world of tools and tinkering. He would hand me my own blocks of wood, some nails and a hammer, and as a child I’d put together whatever came to me and let my imagination run wild. When we were done, we’d often walk through the acres of oak trees collecting acorns and leaves, and it was with him that I discovered my love for crafting and nature.
Where do you see your company heading in the future?
Right now we’re focused on bringing together and marrying the beauty of precious metals and wood in an equally sustainable way. We hear from a lot of our customers that while one partner would love a wooden band, the other leans more towards traditional jewelry and we believe we can make a bigger change by incorporating a sustainable alternative that would speak to them both. We understand that gold and silver jewelry has been a large part of the tradition of marriage in recent times, and we feel that we can work to source reclaimed materials to make this possible.
We are also working to bring together artists as employees, people with their own unique ideas and creative spirits who can help to bring our customers visions to life in their own way.

So you're heading to Coachella this weekend - or maybe next weekend - or maybe Stagecoach the following weekend --- regardless of which festival you have planned on the horizon, I'm willing to bet you want to look (and feel) your best! That's why we've pull together some of our favorite fat-blasting, muscle-toning, on-the-go, do-anywhere exercises that will keep you looking (and feeling) your best!
Festivals always include a TON of walking and standing around. This is why we think it's important to focus on your cardio while also full-body toning. Whether you are one of those people who bounce from side-to-side as you dance or you are a "wave them from side-to-side" person, these exercises have you covered.
Complete 3 sets of 15-20 repetitions. Try to run/jog for 5 minutes between each set for even more cardio. Dumbbell weights can be anywhere from 5-15lbs.. depending on your fitness level.
1. Deadlift & Upright Row
(tones the back of the thighs and the shoulders)
With your knees soft and your feet together, bend forward at your hips keeping a neutral lower back & lower your weights toward the floor along the front of your legs until you feel a stretch in the back of your legs. Stand back up tall as you press your hips forward to stand straight. Pull the weights up in front of you by pulling your elbows up and out to shoulder height. Bend back down and repeat!
2. Reverse Lunge & Front Raise
(tones the thighs, gluts, core and shoulders)
Stand tall with your dumbbells by your sides and step back into a reverse lunge as you raise your arms straight above you. Stand back up using your front leg pushing thru the front heel as you slowly lower the weight back down to your side. As you lift out of the lunge, bring your back leg up and tuck it into your chest. Repeat on each side.
3. Plank & Row
(tones your lower abs, waist, back, shoulders and thighs)
Begin in a plank position holding onto your dumbbells tightly. Slowly shift your weight onto one hand as you row the other up to your side. Keep your core tight to resist rotating. Lower the weight down and repeat for the other side.
4. Squat & Twist
(tones the inner thighs, quads, gluts, chest, shoulders and core)
With your feet a bit wider than shoulder width, squat down - keeping your knees in line with your toes. When your thighs are parallel to the ground, hold the dumbbell (or medicine ball) between your legs. As you stand up, twist to one side and raise the weight above your head on the same side. Keep your core strong. Squat and repeat on the other side.
5. Plie & Punch
(tones the inner thighs, gluts, shoulders & triceps)
Begin with your feet wider than shoulder width and your toes pointing out. Lower your body down to the ground to the point where your knees are in line with your toes. With dumbbells, curl up in front of you, then punch to each side across the front of your body. Stand up and repear.

From the makeup artist who paints a beautiful palette of colors and flawless skin, a photographer who utilizes their camera and lighting techniques to capture contrast and tones that aren't always seen to the naked eye -- to the model who flows and moves in front of the lens to capture a feeling and moment. The results are always something to be proud of. That's why we are sharing this fashion-inspired shoot today at the iconic Salvation Mountain in California.
I've always been intrigued by Salvation Mountain near El Centro and traveled there recently to shoot with sisters, Patricia and Débora Vaz. Because it is so colorful there, I wanted all of the fashion to reflect that bold and bright style as well. I worked closely with the models to stylize the shoot for the perfect look(s). We hit it at the perfect time of day and got some great imagery! Enjoy!

Easter Baking: Coconut Flour Carrot Cupcakes
I love Easter! It’s such a colorful, happy holiday usually filled with brunch on the beach, family, and too many grapefruit mimosas! I tested these out a few weeks ago and Oh Ma Gah, they were so good!! Not too sweet, the perfect amount of carrot(ness) and were the ultimate Easter desert!
I cannot believe that this Sunday is Easter!! Where does the time go??
I love Easter! It’s such a colorful, happy holiday usually filled with brunch on the beach, family, and too many grapefruit mimosas!
I try to bake a special treat every year and this year I had my heart set on Carrot Cupcakes! I used coconut flour instead of regular flour, so they are gluten free (plus I have an obsession with coconut). Usually if a recipe has any more than 5 ingredients, I’M OUT, but since it’s a festive holiday I splurged a little bit.
I tested these out a few weeks ago and Oh Ma Gah, they were so good!! Not too sweet, the perfect amount of carrot(ness) and were the ultimate Easter desert!
I swapped out sugar and used apple sauce and raw honey instead. Every item I used was a whole food, meaning nothing was fat free, low fat, zero sugar, or have any crazy ingredients that I can’t pronounce. I always try and use real foods that my body can recognize and break down, instead storing as fat.
In fact, these cupcakes are pretty healthy, I mean there are carrots in them right?
Don’t let this ingredient list scare you off → you will probably have 80% of the items already in your cupboard
♥ 1/2 cup Coconut Flour
♥ 5 eggs
♥ 1/3 cup grass-fed butter or coconut oil (I like to use butter when I’m baking - just make sure it’s room temp)
♥ 1 teaspoon vanilla
♥ 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
♥ 1 cup apple sauce (buy the real organic stuff)
♥ 1 teaspoon baking powder
♥ 1 teaspoon baking soda
♥ about a cup of shredded carrot (they sell it already shredded at the store, so to make your life easier buy it like this)
♥ optional: add raisins, walnuts, or whatever else your little heart desires
Frosting:
- 1 8oz package full fat cream cheese (You are having one cupcake, it’s not going to kill you, full fat is MUCH better for you than reduced fat, remember WHOLE foods)
- 3 tablespoons honey or agave nectar-
- half of a squeezed lemon
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (ok there is a little sugar but it’s honestly the smallest amount just to fluff the frosting up, you could even use less)
Now…
Pour yourself a glass of champagne, have a friend over and the process of making these will be so much more fun. Trust me, if I can do it, you can probably do it 100 times better. (One time I made brownies that turned out looking like a slab of steak, the whole measurement thing scares me!!!)
- In a large bowl or Kitchen Aid mix eggs, butter, vanilla, honey and applesauce till completely combined
- Next add baking soda, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, and coconut flour into the wet ingredients. Mix until blended
- Add the grated carrots or nuts or whatever else
- Pour your delicious batter into 12 cupcake tins and bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the cupcake comes out clean
For the Frosting:
With a hand mixer or Kitchen Aid, add cream cheese, honey, lemon, and powdered sugar and blend until smooth and fluffy
Apply to cooled carrot cupcakes
I have made these twice and literally eat half the batter and frosting before they are even ready. (what is my problem?)
Since my favorite flowers are daisies and it’s Spring time, I cut the stems off a few daisies and put them right in the center of the cupcake. You can add decorative sprinkles, jelly beans, Peeps, anything to add a little extra love!
Happy baking bunnies!
XO Melissa ♥

THE TREND: Layers and a pop of Color
Life is all about taking risks and sometimes those are fashion risks. These risks I'm talking about are in the form of color pops and color combos maybe you thought you'd never do.
Photography By: Erin Bilanow
We’ve all been there...... you are rushing to get out the door in the morning and you have no idea what you are going to wear! It happens to the best of us and in these types of moments, I try not to over-think my outfit. And not overthinking my outfits means I make my outfit decision within seconds.
I had one of these moments the other day, it was cold and foggy and I needed to get to the bus asap. And in all my chaos of trying to get out the door,I was forced outside of my usual go-to list of looks. I learned quickly that its okay to go outside of your fashion comfort zone. See, I rarely layer my button-downs and sweaters, or stray from my usual color pairing pallet. But on this day I pulled together a color combo I don’t think I’ve ever previously worn (sage and orange not my go-to!). To my surprise, I came into the office and received a boatload of compliments. And what girl doesn't love a good compliment?! I guess trying something new wasn't so bad after all.
Life is all about taking risks and sometimes those are fashion risks. Moral of the story: sometimes when you put together an outfit, the first thing that comes to mind works out better than when you over-think what you are going to wear. So get out there and take a risk with your fashion choices this week. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised with the outcome!

EST. SPOTLIGHT: LOCAL + LEJOS
When I first discovered Local + Lejos their colorful approach had my attention immediately. Aside from the gorgeous patterns and vibrant colors, their mission left a lasting impression.

When I first discovered Local + Lejos their colorful approach had my attention immediately. Aside from the gorgeous patterns and vibrant colors, their mission left a lasting impression. Working directly with undiscovered artisans around the globe, each purchase of hand crafted goods provides an opportunity to create sustainable living. By supporting these artists, consumers have the opportunity to play a first hand role in empowering these artisans while getting a unique hand crafted piece in their home.
Founder and CEO Sheeva Sairafi's interest in culturally rich pieces began at a young age. But it was during a trip to South America, the summer after college graduation, that her appreciation turned into a passion to share. After spending time along side Peruvian weavers learning their culture, traditions and the art of crafting, Sheeva was left in awe of their unparalleled skilled. But in talking with the women, she soon understood their struggle to sell their products. Knowing these artisans needed a steady business, as they were at the mercy of tourism season, she and her sister took as many blankets back to the states as they could fit. Friends loved the items and Sheeva knew she had a unique opportunity. Local + Lejos was born to connect these talented artisans with consumers who may never have had the opportunity to find themselves abroad.
The literal meaning of their name Local {english} being or relating to a particular area and Lejos {Spanish} far away, distant was the perfect name to encompass the companies mission and purpose. Loving everything this company had to offer, We fired questions off to CEO Sheeva, to get some more insight.
What keeps you inspired?
Since starting this adventure a few months ago, I’ve met some really amazing people. This community of conscious individuals that are working to create opportunity in the world constantly inspire me. It has been so amazing to see people so interested in the mission of the company, and really care that every dollar they spend is going to something with meaning.
Favorite product you have created?
My favorite product I've created so far are woven baskets that are currently on their way from Rwanda. It was my first time working with this group of artisan women and designing baskets. Because we've had to work really hard together to get them right, these baskets truly embody the mission of Local + Lejos. By teaching the artisans new patterns and new ways to think about baskets, it has helped empower them to learn and try new things! As a bonus, the earnings from the work helped to but them chickens, goats, pigs and cows to help feed their families.
Favorite thing about Local + Lejos?
My favorite thing about Local + Lejos is that it encompasses my three biggest passions in life: beautifully designed product, business for social good, and adventurous travel.
What does “impact” mean to you?
To me, impact means something that is lasting. The mission of Local + Lejos is to create sustainable change in the communities we work with by empowering the women we employ, a powerful force that transcends outside of work and into everyday life.
How does California inspire your pieces?
The goal of Local + Lejos is to create pieces that can be used in every day life in California, so I’m inspired every day identifying products that would fit in the California lifestyle. The Striped Serape Blanket is a perfect example of this. The blanket reminds me of beach days in Venice, wine picnics in Malibu, and outdoor music listening at Coachella.
Favorite product in the line?
Right now, the Accessory Bag is my favorite product in the line. They are all one-of-a kind, unique, and so fun! I love that they can be used for almost anything, and are the perfect fun pop inside my black leather bag.
To celebrate our love of Local + Lejos and all they do, here's your chance to win some goodies! Check out the details below!

5 Ways to Style Jeans & a T-Shirt
There are days when you just want to get dressed up (in something adventurous and bold), and then there are days when you just feel like slipping on your trusty ol' favorite t-shirt and jeans. Lets talk basics!
Photography by Aaron Smith
There are days when you just want to get dressed up in something adventurous and bold, and then there are days when you just feel like slipping on your trusty ol' favorite t-shirt and ripped jeans. Basics belong in every girls closest and for good reason – they’re endlessly versatile! Sure, you can wear them on their own, but you can also change them to all different styles and situations.
Not sure how to take your basics to the next level? Well, we have five ways you can layer and accessorize your white tee and jeans for whatever your mood or style:
THE BASICS:
1. Classic: Trench Coat + Leopard Flats + Structured Tote
What better to pair with basics than some timeless and classic pieces? For a polished look, layer your jeans and tee with a trench coat and comfy leopard flats. Add a structured tote in a rich, dark color, like Marsala (this year's Color of the Year).
2. Sporty: Bright Sneakers + Baseball Cap + Backpack
This combo is comfy and practical. Start by pairing your basics with a fun pair of bright running shoes or sneakers, and throw on a simple backpack. Accessorize with a trendy, fashion-forward baseball cap.
3. Grunge: Flannel Shirt + Lace-Up Boots + Beanie
This casual, grungy look is about as easy as it gets. Wear your cozy plaid flannel shirt unbuttoned over your tee, and add some more warmth with a slouchy beanie. Toughen up the outfit with lace-up combat boots.
4. Glam: Statement Necklace + Bright Heels + Clutch
To glam up your basics for a date or night out, all you need to do is add sparkle and color. Start with a bright pair of stilettos and a jeweled statement necklace. Add a coordinating sequin clutch for some extra fun.
5. All-American: Denim Jacket + Hi-Top Sneakers
Denim is one of my favorite fashion trends, so what’s more American than a red, white, and blue, denim-on-denim look? Throw on your favorite distressed denim jacket (sleeves rolled up), and for a pop of color and retro flair, add hi-top sneakers.

SIMPLE NO-BAKE 3 INGREDIENT PEANUT BUTTER CUPS
The snack monster strikes again! It always happens right after I eat dinner. I'm at home, indulging in some trashy TV (a la T.G.I.T) and the sweet tooth gremlin starts knocking at my door. But with treats like these ones... maybe I don't mind so much....
The Snack Monster strikes again! It always happens right after I eat dinner. I'm at home, indulging in some trashy TV (a la T.G.I.T) and the sweet tooth gremlin starts knocking at my door.
"What do you what?" I say, annoyed as I open the door.
"I'm hungry." the pesky Snack Monster replies. I raise an eyebrow to him. What makes him think that I want to be interrupted from my Thursday night TV line-up? "I know you don't like me, but I have the perfect and EASY snack you can make me!" I'm intrigued.
I slowly peel myself off the couch and head to the kitchen. The snack monster following behind me, whispering in my ear to open the cabinet and grab just 3 items from the cupboard. "Only three items?" I think.
He was right. I had to share with you all. Maybe I won't be so bitter the next time the Snack Monster knocks on my door.. especially if he brings me ideas like these.
Makes 12 mini peanut butter cups, 80 calories each.
What you'll need:
4 tbsp PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter
4 tbsp Shredded Coconut
For a protein boost, add 2-3 tbsp of Vanilla Whey Protein Isolate (optional)
Instructions:
Place PB2 into a bowl and mix with 8 tbsp water to make a nice, creamy peanut butter.
Mix in coconut shreds and put aside.
Create a double boiler on your stove top and melt down the chocolate chips (be sure not to allow any water to mix with the chocolate or your chocolate will curdle)
In a 12-Cup Mini Muffin Pan, spoon some of the peanut butter mixture into the bottom of the tins. Top with the chocolate.
Place into freezer for 1-2 hour. Use a knife to pop out of the muffin tin once frozen. Freeze to store and will best if eaten within 1 week (I find that if you let them defrost for 5 minutes, before eating, they are perfect!)

The Top 10 Color Trends for Spring/Summer 2015

Pantone released the top hues for spring/summer 2015. With colors like Aquamarine, Scuba Blue, Classic Blue, and Lucite Green, I'm excited to see a bunch of cool colors this spring! The top color trends have an eclectic mix of understated brights, pale pastels, and nature-like neutrals. According to Pantone, designers are stepping toward a minimalistic theme drawing from daydreams of simpler times as we head into the warmer months.
“Many feel compelled to be connected around the clock because we are afraid we’ll miss something important. There is a growing movement to step out and create ‘quiet zones’ to disconnect from technology and unwind, giving ourselves time to stop and be still. Color choices follow the same minimalistic, ‘en plein air’ theme, taking a cue from nature rather than being reinvented or mechanically manipulated. Soft, cool hues blend with subtle warm tones to create a soothing escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

ANATOMY OF A ROOM: LOFT LIVING
Living in a Loft Residence isn't always as dreamy as it seems to be (despite the beautiful styled apartments we see in magazines). However, a large part of Los Angeles lives in lofts or studio apartments so we wanted to give a few tips on how to make the most out of your space.
Photos by Chris Dorsey
Living in a Loft Residence isn't always as dreamy as it seems to be (despite the beautiful styled apartments we see in magazines). However, a large part of Los Angeles lives in lofts or studio apartments. WIth the cost of living being one of the highest in the country, this is the reality for many. But there's a lot of advantages to loft living - such as being able to display and see every piece of decor - all. at. once.
We've compiled our list of loft/studio must-haves and how YOU can get the look of a sleek, chic, loft-styled home.
Succulents – One of my favorite parts of a home is the greenery - and if it comes in the form of succulents, i'm hooked (I'm also someone who is not blessed with a green thumb). These little plants are a great way to add some life into any home.
Candles – Candles can be expensive (especially when you’re looking for a large amount to make a statement or faux fireplace). This set of pillar candles from Anthropologie is a go-to of mine because they’re budget friendly and unscented.
Faux taxidermy – If you like the taxidermy trend, minus the taxidermy part, then these faux pieces are just for you. When you’re working with the long walls along a room, it helps to use art and wall hangings to create a focal point for each “room.”
Blue and white rugs – Rugs will turn your furniture arrangements into actual rooms. This is true in any kind of home, but especially in a studio or loft.
Hanging chair – This unusual item makes every home unique. Not only is it a talking piece for those who come into your home, it tells people you love to unwind, relax and have a little fun!
Flatware & dishes - Pretty enough to entertain with, but practical for everyday use (and the dishwasher), these flatware and dishes are perfect to show off your home cooking off.

GET SWEATY: Partner Up at the Gym!
What's better than transforming your body? Doing it with a friend! So, pair up with a pal — or even your guy — and watch the pounds melt away with our some of our favorite partner full body exercises.
Photography by Shannon Bailey | Lil Bird Photography
What's better than transforming your body? Doing it with a friend! Studies show working out with a buddy can add more than just a healthy dose of quality time. Hitting the gym with a friend, coworker, or special someone can increase accountability, keep spirits high, and even spur better results. So, pair up with a pal — or even your guy — and watch the pounds melt away with our some of our favorite partner full body exercises.
LYING LEG THROW DOWN: Lay with your back on the floor, placing your head between your partner's feet. Reach back and hold your partner's ankles or calves securely with your hands. ring your legs all the way up so your partner is holding onto your ankles. Have your partner throw your legs away and down using momentum and gravity to pull them down to the floor. Resist the force of your legs as they are thrown and don't let your feet touch the ground! Have your partner throw your legs in different directions to work multiple oblique muscles.
V-SIT WITH FOOT PRESS: Still searching for your soul mate? Grab two BOSU balls and take a seat facing each other in a V-position with legs bent, back semi-reclined, and feet pressed against your partners’. Next, start marching those feet in place (without losing contact with your partners’ soles). Beginners, hold the sides of the BOSU with your hands, or get more advanced and go hands-free.
LUNGE TO CHEST PASS: A dynamic move for a dynamic duo. Grab a medicine ball and face your partner, standing about 3-5 feet apart. Keeping the chest up, lunge forward, completing the movement with a crisp (and accurate!) chest pass to your partner. They’ll then catch it and head straight into their lunge-and-pass. Repeat for 10-12 reps each, or until Butterfingers tests your patience.
BODYWEIGHT SQUAT: Stand facing your partner at arm’s length, with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart, grasping each other’s forearms. Maintaining a secure grip, squat down in sync (bonus points if “Bye, Bye, Bye” is blaring) until the thighs are about parallel to the floor. Hold, then slowly return to starting position. Repeat for 10-12 reps, maintaining good form.
PUSH-UP WITH SHOULDER TAP: Hit the mats, facing your partner in a modified push-up position (or full push-up position if you get down like that). Next, lower your bodies by bending at the arms with the abdominals engaged. Push back up to the starting position, then lift your right hand, and tap your partner on the left shoulder (while your partner does the same thing). Complete 10-12 reps, alternating hands each time.

THE TREND: THE VEST
One wardrobe item I always forget about: The Vest. I have multiple and for some reason, they always end up ignored. The vest is such a easy way to add some pizzazz to a simple outfit and make it a bit more interesting.
One wardrobe item I always forget about: The Vest. I have multiple and for some reason they always end up hanging in my closet, unworn until the day I remember they exist. The vest is such an easy way to add some pizzazz to a simple outfit and make it more interesting. I needed to be comfortable (and mobile) at the office the other week so I decided to keep things interesting with a quilted, structured vest and my stepmom’s high school Converse basketball shoes.
You can pair that same vest with skinny jeans and pumps for the cutest casual look too. It's an easy way to take a casual office look from day-to-night for drinks out with your girlfriends (Did someone say Happy Hour?) Don't forget you can pair that vest with more than just jeans. Make things a bit more interesting with a denim vest combined with a light-weight skirt or dress. Is it springtime yet!?
