Inspired by This: Happy Holidays

We are thrilled to hang out with Inspired By This the entire month of December as our Guest Editor. We have already found ourselves learning some amazing tips and can’t wait to be inspired the whole month!  They'll be guiding us through holiday planning and sharing lifestyle tips... be prepared to be inspired!

It is that time of year again..The holidays! With the holiday's come the parties, and I am so excited to share my party planning advice with you! Whether you are going to a party or throwing it, it is so good to know party planning basics! I am going to show you the basic anatomy of a party with all of its major components, as well as how to achieve high end decor on a budget! After this you will be ready to tackle any party that comes your way!

Any party, whether it be a bridal or baby shower, a birthday party, dinner party, or even a holiday party, all have the same basic elements! The major components to any party include:

Create the Setting

This is your time to create the overall ambiance of your party, and where decor and details are very important. The mood of your event can be altered by changing the lighting of the room and having candles mixed within the decor. This is also a great time to consider making your guests feel special by adding little personalized details to your party such as a name card above their place setting, a personalized menu, or even a favor that the guests get to take home with them (look out for our favor DIY next week!) It is important to choose decor that not only corresponds with the theme of your event, but is also esthetically pleasing to your guests!

Food and Drink

This is another great time to personalize your event for your guests! it is important to be mindful of your guests likes and dislikes or any aversions they may have to different foods when planning your menu! Make sure to not only choose items that will appeal to the majority of the group, but also try to plan the menu to fist the theme or time of year your event takes place! For our Christmas party, we chose to plan a menu full of winter salads, comfort food, and an array of winter themed desserts to correspond with the time of year and occasion!

The Tablescape

The table is a very important element because that is where the guest will be entertained! Don't be afraid to pull from items you already have from home, or even collect some decor from places such as Target, Home Goods, or T.J. Max! It is important to step out of the box when setting your decor and tablescape so your items can be reused for any future events you may host! For our event we went with a more modern Christmas theme in order to include unexpected elements such as the wood to tie in our soft florals and more desert-like plants.

We wanted to keep our arrangements low so our guests could see one another and converse over dinner, but also create some depth to our table. For floral centerpieces, we find it is best to start with a neutral base and add pops of color! As you can see from our Christmas party we had neutral white florals in combination with pops of bright red flowers and a hint of mint from the succulents. For our table settings we placed a menu on top of our plate and napkin and tied it down with braided fabric (We are sharing this DIY next week)! We then added name cards above each individual place setting - adding a personal touch! Lastly, food presentation is very important. It is such a great touch to have pretty platters and risers to serve the food, drinks, and desserts to keep the look of the party appealing!

I hope this inspired you to throw a party of your own! With the party basics I gave you, you now have some ideas on how to have a great party with amazing decor, but on a smaller budget!

The Holiday Season is in full effect and with that comes parties, dinners and events. It leaves us searching into our recipe databases for something tasty (but healthy).. you know, that special dish that will keep people coming back for seconds (because let's just admit it now, we want to be know as the person who brought the most amazing dish.. am i right?

If you are anything like me, you are often left with the lingering question... "What should I bring?". I find myself perusing Pinterest for ideas or and inspiration so I wanted to save you the time and energy. I'm sharing one of my newer dishes.. a spin on a traditional dish, but it's packed with additional greens and not so much fat (and we can all be grateful for that).

BRUSSELS AU GRATIN

  • 2 cups brussel sprouts, sliced
  • 6 small Gold Yellow Potatoes
  • 1/2 medium gold sweet onion
  • 1 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 3 tbsp ghee (or grass-fed butter)
  • 2 tbsp coconut flour
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic (2 cloves)
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (whichever you prefer - i used Trader Joe's 3-kind shredded cheese)
  • Handful of Panco Bread Crumbs.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Take brussels sprouts and slice them into sliced pieces. Discard the ends (where the brussels grow).
  3. Slice potatoes into thin slices.
  4. In a medium-large saucepan, sweat onions & garlic until they become translucent. Add 2 tbsp ghee & 2 tbsp flour. Once combined (it'll start to look like a paste) add coconut milk. Stir until combined and let sit over a medium heat for 3-5 minutes until thickened.
  5. Add salt, pepper, nutmeg. Whisk in cheese until melted, then turn off heat.
  6. In a 9x9" dish, layer 1/2 of the potatoes, followed by 1/2 of the sauce. Top with 1/2 brussels sprouts and then, potatoes, sauce and brussels sprouts. Top with Panco crumbs and last tablespoon of ghee (melted). Sprinkle with cheese (optional).
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Then, remove foil and cook another 10 minutes until top is brown and toasty.

The Naked Truth

Yep, I said naked. That tantalizingly taboo word that gets a bad wrap from time to time. I wanted to write about body image (specifically mine), so I began by googling the word naked.

Yep, I said naked. That tantalizingly taboo word that gets a bad wrap from time to time. I wanted to write about body image (specifically mine), so I began by googling the word naked. Here's what I found:

Naked: A person unclothed, barren, defenseless, without cover, exposed to harm, unprotected, vulnerable.

YIKES! What a negative spin on the old au naturale! No wonder it gets a bad wrap.

I feel like this negativity translates into how a lot of folks feel about their bodies these days. And by a lot of folks, I mean me. Somewhere along the way, I got so wrapped up in trying to be a certain size, shape, weight, height, "LA Yoga teacher body" way that I forgot to just be me. And being me is what I do best! In the last year or so though, I've noticed a huge positive shift in the way I feel about my body. Somehow I feel more comfortable in my own skin.  (YAY!) But where did this sudden boost of body love come from?! I certainly haven't always been this way.

Undoubtedly a huge part of it stems from the countless hours spent on my yoga mat learning self-acceptance and patience with my body, but this shift also occurred simultaneously with something else. BEING NAKED.

I traced my new found body love back to when I started nude modeling for art classes a little over a year ago. There is something so courageous about unabashedly presenting your natural body to another person (or people) to be interpreted as art! When I step onto a stage to be painted or drawn, I'm just a body though, nothing more, nothing less. I'm neither celebrated nor judged for all my lines, curves, dimples, scars, and unique parts that make me me. I started thinking, isn't that how it should be? The artists don't care what my body looks like. I'm just a form to be painted or drawn to hone their talents. However I show up is perfect every time.

Holy Moly. What a game changer if we all (myself included) felt that way about our bodies all the time!

Nude modeling accidentally became like a body image meditation for me. I don't have to put on make up (which I'm terrible at!), worry about what I'm wearing, or fix my hair. I can't entertain negative thoughts about my body because I'm so focused on holding the poses for extended periods of time. Plus it's not like there's anywhere to hide my least favorite parts when I'm on stage. I have to embrace them! I also have absolutely no control over how any of the artists will interpret my body, so I have to let go of the idea of what I "should look like." Something about that gives me so much peace.

While nothing has physically changed, my perspective has changed immensely. I know It will be a practice to keep this mindset up as my body changes and ages, but it's a practice I'm willing to stick with. I have so many more valuable things I want to to do with my time and energy than waste precious moments being weighed down by negative thoughts about myself. Of course I'll work to keep my body at its healthiest, but not because I'm trying to fit into some unattainable "should be" mold. I'll do it from a place of self-love and acceptance instead. The truth is, our bodies are just containers for our souls. In the end, I would rather people remember me for my heart, my soul, and for the way I made them feel rather than for body anyway.

While I completely understand that standing in front of a crowd in your birthday suit isn't for everyone, having a little more compassion for yourself, and for others certainly is. It's not easy, and I don't always succeed in doing so, but I'm striving to be the kind of soul that will shine bright regardless of what my body looks like. I've also started to look for that sparkle in the people I choose to surround myself with.

To help me keep my own personal body image in check (as well as the way I view others), I continually ask myself:

If we could see each other's souls instead of our bodies, would we still surround ourselves with the same bodies?

Food for thought as you flow through the holidays. :)

Shine Bright,

Mary

7 Ways To Be A Nicer Person

Life can seem to deal you some bad decks of cards sometimes. A bad batch of lemons. But sometimes, it's up to you to take your lemons and make lemonade.  Here are a few tips to help you get to the light side. The happy, helping, motivating side! The side, where you can't lose if you stay with it!

Photography by Renata Amazonas

Photography by Renata Amazonas

As I'm sitting here, drinking my coffee, scrolling through the web, while there are lots of happy stories (which are all I take time to read and focus on), I see head lines of horrible stories, dealing with just plain, mean people.

I don't really come across mean people too often, because I think you get what you give, and generally, I'm a pretty nice person. Every now and then, some person stumbles into your life that isn't really welcomed in it though and you encounter things you're uncomfortable with, like meanness.

I feel like society has kind of made being mean a "cool" trait, especially for women. I think there are a lot of subliminal messages being sent to young girls that if they want to get anywhere in this dog eat dog, man's world, they need to be mean to get what they want and I really want to squash that. It is so untrue. Sure, you may move up the ladder a few steps, by being mean, throwing people under the bus, and pushing people around, but in the end, you'll lose. And I believe that with all my heart and soul.

I think a lot of people get lost in chasing things they don't even really want and in that chase they become some one they really didn't even ever want to be! So, if you sit back and think and start to realize, "Oh my gosh. I am a mean person!" This one is for you :) Here are a few tips to help you get to the light side. The happy, helping, motivating side! The side, where you can't lose if you stay with it!

1. Every judgmental thought does not need to be shared. EVERY human being has rude thoughts about complete strangers. Stop sharing them. Even with your closest friends. Notice your harsh, judgmental thought and keep it to yourself. Soon, it won't even be hard. Those thoughts will flow in and out, without you even noticing or feeling the need to share them. A laugh at some one else's expense isn't a good laugh at all.

2. Smile when you feel like glaring. This is especially for women. I feel like we are born with a little, green monster inside of us that brings out jealousy at the weirdest times. So if you see a woman that looks like she has got "it" going on, the most appropriate reaction is to give her a dirty look. Wrong! If you notice yourself wanting to scowl at some one, smile instead. It's not fake, it's progress. And if you stop to think about it, you have no idea why you were about to throw that dirty look anyways, so just throw out a smile instead.

3. Help people. My God, HELP PEOPLE! Sometimes, I am literally dumb-founded in the grocery store parking lot, when I have cans rolling away from my grocery cart or when my actual grocery cart is rolling away about to cause an accident, a child screaming in my ear, another I'm buckling into the car seat, I lost a shoe somewhere, I'm dripping sweat, and Lord knows what else has happened, and tons of people just walk on by. So I have to sprint after my cart, while holding a child, while leaving the other child in the car with the air conditioning running and the doors wide open, probably scratching the car parked next to us, all the while trying my darndest not to collapse to my knees and start bawling. Phew! If you see a person with their hands full, open their door. If you see a woman, who looks like she didn't have time to brush her hair that morning, tell her she looks magnificent! If a person has cans of food rolling away in the grocery store parking lot, bend over, pick them up, and help the poor woman out. They will not think you're weird. They will really, really appreciate it.

4. Speak kindly. Is it so hard to say nice things? So, we've already stopped sharing the judgmental thoughts, but now, the trick is, to say kind words. When you see a pregnant woman, obviously exhausted and larger than normal due to the fact she's carrying a human being inside of her, instead of saying, "Wow! You're about to pop! Look at your swollen ankles!" How about telling her she's glowing and looks sensational. Every pregnant woman wants the glow and even if it isn't entirely true, you will make her day. And for heavens sake, when a woman isn't wearing any make up, if you notice, tell her she's naturally beautiful, do NOT say, "You look tired." The point is, when you know some one isn't looking or feeling their best, why point it out? Why not say something kind and make their day a little better?

5. Say please and thank you. Having some good ol' fashioned manners is becoming a lost art and I'm here to say, "Not up in here!" A simple 'please' and 'thank you,' go such a long way, you really can't say them enough. So say those words all the time. Say them to the people bagging your groceries, handing you your Taco Bell, holding the elevator door for you, and letting you in their lane during traffic (wave to acknowledge and thank them, PLEASE!!). When making requests, just put the simple word, 'please,' in front of it and it sounds fantastic!

6. Ignore the hate and anger. There is a lot of negative, mean energy getting tossed around in today's world and this may sound naive, but I suggest, just staying in your own happy bubble. That doesn't mean you're unaware, it just means you focus on the beauty and happiness in the world, which causes more of that positive energy. It can be a drain reading about problem after problem and leaves you feeling defeated and like 'whats the point?' So I say, avoid all that, read happy, inspiring stories (there are just as many of those as the bad ones) and you will feel uplifted and motivated to make this world a better place :).

7. Figure yourself out. From my short, 26 years, on this planet, I've noticed, people who don't really know who they are, what they're doing, or where they want to go are the angriest and sometimes, turn that anger into being mean to others. I think the absolute, best thing anyone can do for themselves and the world around them, is get to the root of their soul and chase their innate dreams. When you know who you are, you are happier with yourself and being happier with yourself causes you to be happy and kind to all others around you, because you realize we're all in this thing together!

So, there ya have it! 7 ways to be a nicer person to the immediate world around you. The world and the people in it is a magical place, you just have to focus on the good!

RUBIES & RADISHES: WHAT IS PALEO?

We’ve teamed up with Arsy Vartanian, founder of one of the top ten Paleo Blogs, Rubies and Radishes.  She is the Author of two very successful cookbooks; The Paleo Slow Cooker and The Paleo Foodie Cookbook, and is here to help us learn more about this method of eating real food.

Arsy explains Paleo very simply.  “It’s a lifestyle that aspires to achieve optimal health by following a diet based on what and how our Paleolithic ancestors ate. The current Paleo movement uses our ancestors as a starting point, but leverages modern science to expand from there. Essentially, it is a diet focused on consuming whole, natural foods, such as meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and healthy fats. All you have to do really is eliminate the top three food toxins – gluten, industrial/vegetable oils and sugar!”

Seems so simple, right!?  There are so many interesting things to learn about Paleo, it may seem overwhelming at times.  With the help of Arsy we are diving into a few topics that will help ease your mind through the learning process. Let’s find out how she has kept herself inspired and committed to this lifestyle for over five years now.

Established California | Rubies & Radishes | Paleo Diet Basics

 Where do we start?

For best results, I recommend starting with a Whole30 (which doesn't allow alcohol). But remember, it's a Whole30, not a Whole365. Most people experience such great benefits by following a strict 30 day approach and then they are really able to loosen the reigns after that. In the long run you want Paleo to be a sustainable way of eating, for some of us that means having occasional cocktails and fancy cheese!

You can see the program guidelines here: http://whole30.com/whole30-program-rules/

For someone that is thinking about converting or trying it out what are the top five tips for success you can give them?

1. Plan, plan, plan!  This lifestyle requires eating fresh food.  It can be overwhelming at times but once you get into the routine and make it part of your lifestyle it’s really easy to adapt to this. To be successful, it is very important to plan your meals ahead and have an idea of what you are going to eat for the week or at least the next few days. We all make the worst decisions when we are starving, rushed or on the go.  Yes it takes time, but there’s something soothing and grounding about spending time focusing on taking care of yourself with good food for the week.  Your body, mind and mood will appreciate the effort!

2. Cook in bulk – that’s why my first book was the Paleo Slow Cooker.  It takes minimal prep, you can have meals for the rest of the week or freeze them for later.  If you do a couple at the top of the week it’ll give you a variety too if you get sick of repeating foods daily.

3. Read labels. Never assume that something labeled “natural” or “organic” is healthy. Look for ingredients you don’t recognize as whole foods.  If there are any ingredients you don’t recognize as food, then chances are you shouldn’t eat it.

4. Eat a satisfying meal before you go to parties so you don’t get tempted by unhealthy choices.

5. Check in: Take the time to remember why you are doing this, check in with yourself and be proud of the choices you have made. It is hard work transitioning to a real food diet.

What about dining out?  Are you bound to home cooking for life??

It is completely possible to eat out and stick to your Paleo diet it just requires a little planning ahead.

  • Review the menu before you go. If you have an idea of what to order, you will be less tempted by the pasta and artisan pizza on the menu.

  • Ask questions. Gluten is one of the main things we avoid on a Paleo diet. Often things that will seem gluten-free on the menu may not be, as flour is used to thicken sauces or soy sauce is used to marinate the meat. I bet you didn’t know that the first ingredient in most soy sauce is wheat! Luckily Gluten free is also so popular now that a lot of restaurants are marking things as gluten free preemptively, but still safe to ask.

  • Substitute sides for more vegetables or salad.

  • Ask for olive oil and balsamic vinegar instead of salad dressing, which is usually loaded with sugar.

  • Don’t be hard on yourself and give yourself a little room to enjoy the food and the company.

What keeps you committed to this lifestyle?

The health benefits I have experienced have been tremendous. I can't imagine going back to feeling how I used to - lethargic and low energy. Now, I have the energy to run my own business, cook and develop recipes, take care of my toddler and enjoy our beautiful beach town. I have eaten this way for so long, that it's become a lifestyle. I don't think about it anymore. Our entire family eats Paleo and our toddler is really thriving on a diet based around real, whole foods.

What are some of the health benefits of Paleo?

There are so many! Many people try Paleo for weight loss, but find that what keeps them committed is the increased energy and focus that they experience. In addition, Paleo is an anti-inflammatory diet, so it works to reduce the risk of modern day diseases such as autoimmune conditions, diabetes and osteoporosis.

Can you elaborate on the three food toxins and how to watch out for them?

Gluten is a protein composite found in wheat and related grains, including barley and rye. Gluten, when it is not properly prepared (soaking, sprouting and fermenting), which it usually never is in our culture, can be really hard on the gut and digestive system. In addition, on the Paleo diet we remove all grains and legumes, at least initially. This means soy, corn, beans and peanuts (they are actually a legume not a nut).

Vegetable Oils and Industrial Seed Oil, include canola, corn, soybean, cottonseed oil and safflower oil. These oils are unnatural and heavily processed with chemical solvents and in addition they are very high in Omega-6 fatty acids, which we aim to reduce on a Paleo diet.

Processed sugar, this includes artificial sweeteners. In addition to the typical health concerns on excess sugar, many times processed sugars are made from GMO sugar beets or GMO corn. On a Paleo diet, we aim to eat high quality food with minimal processing. You can swap out the refined and processed sugars, for natural sweetners such as honey, 100% maple syrup and coconut sugar.

How much of California inspires you (i.e.location, local produce)?

Everything! I try my best to use all local produce and meat. We are so lucky in California, we have access to so much local food year round. In Santa Cruz there is an abundance of local farms. We get our meat, chicken, pork, veggies and fish all from local farmers, ranchers and fisherman.  It feels really good to support local businesses and also know where my food is coming from.

What keeps you inspired in the kitchen?

Reading food magazines! Some of my favorites are Food & Wine and Bon Appétit Magazine.  They always leave me with brainstorming new ideas and recipes to create.

What can we look forward to next week?

Some of my favorite Thanksgiving recipes and a special Pumpkin Muffin recipe I created just for this that I am so excited to share with you.  It’s great for the holidays and so delicious.

PERCEPTION & BEAUTY

Makeup can be a powerful tool.

Its application can be the start of a good day by lifting your mood or giving you that added boost of confidence.  It may also be used to alter or enhance ones look for a dressed up night out by only adding to your existing features or creating a dramatic look for photos.

Beauty is about perception not about makeup. I think the beginning of all beauty is knowing and liking oneself. You can’t put on makeup or dress yourself or do your hair with any sort of fun or joy if you are doing it from a position of correction.”  - Kevyn Aucoin, Beauty Expert.

Makeup can be a powerful tool.

Its application can be the start of a good day by lifting your mood or giving you that added boost of confidence.  It may also be used to alter or enhance ones look for a dressed up night out by only adding to your existing features or creating a dramatic look for photos.

Whatever the reason is for wearing make-up, none of this matters if the most important part does not exist. Each of us have an individual pursuit to discovering our beauty. Believing that you are beautiful starts on the inside. We must have a healthy perception of beauty within ourselves…Period.

Curious to find out other California women’s perception on beauty and make-up, I set out to find out just how it plays a role in their value of self-confidence. Here are some of the interesting quotes from my interviews.

IMG_9939.jpg

When do you wear makeup?

"I love the days where my skin is bare, and I embrace those days, just like I do when I wear a full face of makeup. Each day is different and I enjoy the freedom I get when I decide to wear makeup or not. Choice is important."- Rachel Pagan 29 Makeup Artist and Yoga Instructor, North Hollywood, CA.

“Everyday! When you look good, you feel good. In turn in brings out confidence.” - Margret Romero 31, Escrow Agent, Los Angeles, CA.

"I wear makeup for other people, never for myself. Physical youth and attractiveness give performers a huge edge in this city. More often than not, when all else is equal, an opportunity will be given to the more attractive of two candidates." - Linda Y. 30, Magician, Los Angeles

How do you feel when wearing makeup?

“I don’t feel comfortable wearing makeup. I feel vain in attempting to improve the way I look and I don’t feel that people should feel like they need to improve the way they look naturally” - Monica Gellar, 36, Architect, Los Angeles CA

“Makeup is like a bra… You rarely leave the house without one on for that added lift! Makeup kind of does the same thing! Makeup not only makes me feel beautiful, it gives me confidence in knowing I put effort in choosing the way I want to look” - Kelly Marcus, 28, Senior Paralegal, Los Angeles CA.

“If I'm not broken out, I'm comfortable with no makeup. I always feel more attractive and confident with makeup, but at the same time, I feel "untouchable", literally. I don't like that makeup can rub off and get messed up. Skin is just.... there.” - Becca Adams, 27, Fitness Trainer & Actress, Los Angeles CA.

What do you think of women who wear no makeup?

“Jealous! I perceive it as someone who is comfortable in their own skin and owns it. That is admirable.” - Lindsay V. 29, Creative Director at Established California, Los Angeles, CA

"It depends on whether it looks like a choice and they good/healthy, or if it looks like they just don't care. If they look good I admire them. If they look like they don't care, I feel like that's sloppy." - Ester Hillebrand 40, Personal Chef, Venice, CA

“There are times when I get jealous of natural beauties and other times where I am glad to have my makeup skills. I think people who walk around in their own skin must be the most confident people in the world’”- Katie Hillman 20, Makeup Artist, San Diego CA.

Have you ever asked yourself why you wear make up?  I know I wear make up because I love to feel that added level to my natural beauty.

My favorite perspective from the interviews was this from Linda Y. and really sums it up for me “No amount of makeup can ever cover up the natural charisma of a woman with a genuine smile, who is warm and caring and present to all around her”.

After listening to these women, I think it solidifies the fact that makeup is only a tool to be utilized in various ways for every woman from time to time. Understanding that it all starts from within is the most powerful and important piece to take away. Learning to own our natural beauty and being self confidence with it is the biggest gift we can give to ourselves. We deserve nothing less.

When the air starts getting crisp and the leaves begin changing colors, I get a bit nostalgia for steaming cups of hot chocolate in front of the fireplace! But now, theres so much more to hotel chocolate than milk + cocoa!

When the air starts getting crisp and the leaves begin changing colors, I get a bit nostalgic for steaming cups of hot chocolate in front of the fireplace.  But now, there’s so much more to hot chocolate than warm milk and cocoa powder.  So, armed with my favorite Oh Joy! party pieces, I’ve put together a simple and rustic hot chocolate bar as the perfect ending for any party!

Oh Joy! is my favorite lifestyle blogger whose Fall collection for Target continues to bring a huge smile to my face and queues up my “happy dance!”  Her color palette of gold and metallic sprinkled with vibrant jewel tones provide the perfect backdrop for the season (and bonus tip: these pieces can be re-used for a New Years Eve celebration as well!).  I love the small details that are quintessential Oh Joy! - the metallic foil in the napkins, the gold detailing on the pitchers and the gold frills that trim the tiniest party hats around!

With event season in full swing, I’ve been able to indulge my sweet tooth with everyone’s versions of dessert bars.  But, since fall is officially here, I thought a better way to welcome the change in seasons would be a cozy DIY hot chocolate bar party right in the comforts of my own home.

Here are some easy tips to help you create your own festive and budget-friendly hot chocolate bar:

 Essentials

  • White mugs

  • Mason jars (various sizes)

  • Cake stands

Décor

  • Chalk Board Signs

  • Table Runner

  • Wooden crates

  • Spice racks

  • Paper fans

  • Mini Party Hats

  • Gold Confetti

Sweet Treats

Toppings

  • Marshmallows (various sizes)

  • Chocolate chips

  • Butterscotch chips

  • Cinnamon chips

  • Peppermint

  • Sprinkles

  • Cinnamon

  • Whip Cream

  • Edible gold hearts

When the party comes to an end, each of your guests can recreate the fun at home with little jars of hot chocolate mix to go.  A DIY hot chocolate bar party is the perfect way to warm hearts and tummies!

 A Special Thank you!

31 BITS: Mornings with Jessie

We've teamed up with the four creative, talented and lovely women (Anna, Alli, Jessie and Kallie) behind the handcrafted jewelry company, 31 Bits, this month. Their company provides jobs to women in Uganda in hopes to empower them to rise above poverty.

Jessie 1.jpg

We've teamed up with the four creative, talented and lovely women (Anna, Alli, Jessie and Kallie) behind the handcrafted jewelry company, 31 Bits, this month. Their company provides jobs to women in Uganda in hopes to empower them to rise above poverty. Their "Fashion for Good" message encourages conscious consumerism and that is something we are proud to get behind and share. Every item sold by 31 Bits makes a direct impact on the women's lives in Uganda because they are entirely funded by the product sales!

This week we are talking with Brand Director, Jessie - a self-proclaimed coffee guru. She's letting us tag along and take a peek into how she starts her mornings. Find out what keeps her inspired, how she finds balance and how you can help get involved and share the message behind 31Bits.

When I wake up, the first thing I do is… Think about coffee. I literally think, the sooner I get out of bed, the sooner I can get a cup of coffee...

I usually wake up at...Our life at Bits has no consistency. Everyday looks a little different. It's normal to have 6am wake up calls for photo shoots or a trip to LA, but I can make up for it on quiet days and press snooze until 8am!

Breakfast consists of...Drumroll please...Iced Coffee! Sometimes topped off with a granola bar, banana, or green smoothie.

My favorite morning drink is…A Large iced coffee from Peets with a dash of creamer. Peets just does their iced coffee right.

Do you play music in the mornings? If so, what’s your go-to jam? My alarm is set to a Taylor Swift song, does that count? :)

When I get to the office, the first thing I do is.. Prioritize my to-do list for the day. If I have any creative writing or brainstorming to do, I try to do it first. I've heard that if you start your day with emails or anything monotonous, it will suck the creativity right out of you! My creativity is best either first thing in the morning or in the late, uninterrupted hours of the night!

My favorite at-work distraction… Donut deliveries! We have a couple friends that work at a local donut shop, Side Car, and frequently pop by with a box of the daily flavors! Their Butter & Salt donut has literally made my life complete.

My favorite thing on my desk.. My iPad. I carry it around everywhere. It's my best friend at meetings, for traveling, grabbing inspiration from Pinterest on the fly, and for jotting down quick notes at my desk.

I think the best hidden gem is found... In Costa Mesa! It feels like a small town stuck right in the middle of Orange County, filled with hidden gems and great people. It might not seem like much at first glance, but it's filled with boutique coffee shops, hidden bars, gourmet donuts, amazing chefs, great shopping, calm neighborhoods, an epic 90's cover band, and is a 10-minute bike ride from the beach.

My Favorite Thing about California is.. having everything at your fingertips. My friends and I love staycations and weekend adventures. From the beach to the mountains, from epic campsites to urban city strolls, from Disneyland to sailing to bike rides, we've got it all!

I stay inspired by... three things. Spending time with Jesus, spending time outside in nature and spending time in a community of creative people. Jesus keeps me going, nature keeps me calm, and my community keeps me sane and pushes me to be better!

The best advice I would give my 16 yr old self is... Don't compare yourself to others. Comparison will rob you of your joy and slow you down. Don't feel defeated because of someone else's success. Instead, look forward, be the best version of you that you can be, encourage those around you and press on toward your goals!

How has this company changed your life? In the beginning, we thought this would be a side-gig, but as opportunities began to unfold and we started planning our development program, we quickly realized we were in this for the long-haul! Our friends coined us as "The Bits Girls" and our little three bedroom house became "The Bits House." The five of us founders became like sisters and our women in Uganda became like family. We had so many people from our university, church, and community come around us in the beginning that 31 Bits became our entire social life! I know you shouldn't let your job define you, but when you love what you do and are surrounded by amazing people, I think there can be an exception! We've worked incredibly hard to grow this company, but we've never stopped having fun along the way. Every time we hear about one of our artisans sending their kids to school, or starting her own business, or feeling like they are part of a family for the first time, we remember why we do what we do and it pushes us to keep going.

How do you find balance in the crazy life of running your own company at such a young age? My life feels balanced because I have a really solid community of people around me. My friends don't let me stay a workaholic for too long. I surround myself with people who have similar values, who will care for me creatively, spiritually, and physically.

What is your advice to others looking to get involved and help? One of the best ways to get involved at 31 Bits is by throwing a house party! We got started by simply inviting friends to our home and sharing stories of change in Uganda, and we'd encourage others to do the same! Not everyone has a chance to go to Uganda, but this is a fun way to empower women in Uganda while throwing a party with friends!

31 BITS: A DAY IN THE LIFE W/ ALLI

This week we got to talk with Alli (a walking Yelp) who is always in-the-know of new restaurants. She's 31 Bits' go-to person when they are looking for the best places to get food and drinks (in just about any city you can think of). She's sharing with us what her typical Friday looks like, in addition to some of her favorite spots in Southern California.

  • 6am :: wake up + head to the gym!

  • 7:30am :: have my morning coffee, read, and check emails

  • 8:30am :: head out the door, and make a quick stop at Nekter for a green juice or smoothie.

  • 9am :: in the office. Mornings are typically spent catching up with the girls about what they did that night, current events, and recipe-swapping. ;) THEN it's work time! Typically, first, I answer emails and post on 31 Bits social media accounts.

  • 10am :: Marketing interns show up, and I'm training + assigning tasks for them.

  • 12pm :: Lunch time! Favorite place to grab a quick, healthy bite is Bear Flag. The best fish tacos on the west coast!!

  • 2pm :: Brainstorm meeting with Jessie and the interns about upcoming events and campaigns.

  • 3:30pm :: Our Finance Director, Rob, comes into the office with hot-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies! We are ALL obsessed with his cookies... it's our end of the week treat!

  • 5:00pm :: Wrap things up in the office. Make sure I have our media calendar set for the weekend, answer last minute emails, and send the interns home!

  • 5:30pm :: Evening bike ride with my hubbie. Our favorite after-work tradition! We get some exercise, share about our day, and try to catch the sunset!

  • 7:30pm :: Date night at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Eat Chow. I always order the same thing - the vegetarian tostada! Bobby loves the Chow BBQ burger. And the truffle parmesan fries. (We both really love food!!)

  • 10:00pm :: Meet up with friends for drinks and dancing at a local underground bar, La Cave for 90's night - thanks to cover band Sega Genecide!

GRACIAS MADRE: A One-of-a-Kind Plant Based Mexican Restaurant

I was recently in West Hollywood and decided to check out Mexican Restaurant, Gracias Madre. I could literally eat Mexican food everyday, specifically here in Los Angeles, and am very intrigued with the idea of Mexican cuisine that does not incorporate meat. I didn’t really know what to expect.

Disclaimer: I am not vegan. Now that I got that off my chest, I want all meat lovers reading this to stick with me here since the food at Gracias Madre was so delicious. When I walked in, I was blown away by the décor. The indoor dining area and large patio were both very spacious and comfortable. The colors were bright and welcoming with beautiful tiles surrounding a bar showcasing extensive tequila options.

Gracias Madre exceeds expectations with its “organic, farm fresh, locally sourced, full of flavor and love” cuisine. Executive Chef Chandra Gilbert has an impressive repertoire, including Café Gratitude (esteemed vegan restaurant) as Director of Operations. Beverage Director Jason Eisner has made a menu that highlights small-batch mezcals and tequilas. Even the cocktails are made with local ingredients and house made syrups.

Now, let’s talk about the menu. I chose to start with the gordita appetizer that was a potato masa cake, with warm salsa verde, avocado, and cashew crema. Surprisingly, the crema tasted very similar to sour cream and it was really light. I was also drawn to the coconut ceviche tostada. That one blew my mind. They take coconut meat and slice it into little pieces, adding lime juice, guacamole, pico de gallo and lettuce. The texture felt exactly like what a fish ceviche would. It was delicious.  Their menu had plenty of different options and the staff was very knowledgeable. Popular items include flash-fried cauliflower with cashew nacho cheese and lemon or the potato and chorizo made of tempeh quesadilla. Gracias Madre also offers Brunch on the weekends and an even more extensive dinner menu. Check it all out here.

The drink program there is also quite impressive. Options include a Boozy Popsicle with Mezcal, pineapple and jalapeno or snow cones like La Quinceanera featuring tequila blanco, muddled kiwi, mint, lemon, agave nectar, lime bitters, and shaved ice. My favorite hour is happy hour and theirs is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Options include $5 margaritas and some food items at a discounted price.

I cannot wait to go back, and didn’t miss eating meat at all while at Gracias Madre. The menu is so different from typical Mexican and the flavors really shine, so I totally forgot it was even vegan. I would definitely recommend it and am excited for a fresh approach on Mexican, my favorite cuisine. Meatless Mondays is sounding better and better.

THE TREND: SKINNY DENIM

California style is an eclectic mix.  It's part relaxed bohemian, mixed in with a little edge, combined with colorful, feminine glam. But one thing can be said, there is a definite laid back, yet chic vibe to California style.

What does California Style mean?  Whether you are a native or have visited a few times, you may have noticed California style is an eclectic mix.  It's part relaxed bohemian, mixed in with a little edge, combined with colorful, feminine glam.  As different as the regions of California are, that's as different as California style can be.  But one thing can be said, there is a definite laid back, yet chic vibe to California style.

Being a California Native, I've grown up through all types of fashion trends.  From grunge to neons, semi-preppy to relaxed, I've seen a lot of styles and clothing pieces come and go.  But one staple in my wardrobe has been, far and away, my denim.  I might have gone through wide-leg, high-waisted trends, but denim has always been a staple in my wardrobe.

Skinny jeans, while around for a few years now, still feel fresh and new to me every season.  That's the thing about California, we love our jeans.  We wear them with just about everything and anything, on weekends and work days.  We California girls can turn out a pretty great outfit from our favorite denim styles, can't we?  There is a true, laid-back yet chic vibe that denim brings with it and in California, that's just how we like it.  This fall, my love of skinny denim remains tried and true and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon.  Here are three ways to pair your jeans, from a California Gal, who considers jeans a fall wardrobe staple!

Style 1 | Edgy Chic

Style 2 | Relaxed Bohemian Meets Feminine Glam

Style 3 | Tailored Bohemian

Eight Beauty Essentials for Fall

The presence of October is California’s mark for the Fall season. We are automatically programmed to change out our clothing; not only to wear Fall’s coolest trends but also prepare for the cooler months. Just like our seasonal wardrobe overhaul, we should give our beauty routine a revamp.

The presence of October is California’s mark for the Fall season. We are automatically programmed to change out our clothing; not only to wear Fall’s coolest trends but also prepare for the cooler months. Just like our seasonal wardrobe overhaul, we should give our beauty routine a revamp. A few quick updates and product swaps will help your skin, make-up and hair shine even in the crisper days to come. Check out our beauty picks that are worth you shaking up your beauty routine for.

Skincare:

1.     Face Mask: Ultimate hydration is key for fall. The drop in temperatures will leave your skin feeling dry. Facemasks are a nightly must to keep you skin’s appearance radiant, soft and plump. Try Dolce & Gabbana Aurealux Mask for ultimate hydration.

2.     Face Moisturizer: Daily moisturizer is a must (really, for any season). For Fall we must achieve the highest level of hydration without hindering our make-up application. A moisturizer with ingredients such hyaluronic acid and rose water will transform your dry tired skin in a second! Try Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream to help your skin’s surface retain moisture.

3.     Lip Salve: A tin or tub of your favorite moisturizing lip salve is a must. Easy to take on the go, use this product at any onset of dryness. Try cult favorite C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve which offers more moisture that the average lip balm.

Make-up:

4.     Foundation: Your complexion coverage needs change from Summer to Fall. Now that the sun has made you skin a little darker and the crisp air has made it more dry and dull you will need to choose a product that offers more coverage and protection.  Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is a great option for silky, buildable coverage that won’t leave you feeling like your make-up is caked on.

5.     Brown Lipstick: Use the Fall to be fearless and go for a new lipstick shade. Brown colored lipstick is a great option for any skin tone and was a season hit on the runways. Try Tom Ford Lip Color in Negligee.

6.     Navy Eyeliner:  Navy eyeliner is the new Black this Fall. Dark enough to provide ample definition but light enough to compliment every skin tone. Navy is the way to go this season! Navy will give your eyes dimension helping them to look brighter! We suggest NYX Cosmetics Slim Eye Pencil in Sapphire.

Haircare:

7.     Deep Conditioner: Hair strands will lose the most moisture during the Fall season. With the added heat from our styling tools and the crisper weather a hair conditioning treatment is a weekly must. Sachajuan’s Hair Repair is the product to buy.

8_Loreal Mythic Oil.png

8.     Protecting Serum:  Daily styling with heat tools makes prepping and protecting your strands from heat tools is a must. No one wants to sizzle their strands. By adding L’Oreal Professional Mythic Oil Seve Protectrice will prep, prime and protect your hair all in one product!

DIY: GALLERY WALL DISPLAYS

A good gallery wall is eclectic. There is a little bit of everything but an underlying cohesive nature to the wall as a whole.  So here are our tips on how to make your Gallery Wall display one of your favorites parts of your home.

I love to decorate my walls. But with so many great art prints and options to include, it can be difficult to make a decision. Its moments like this I thank the skies for gallery walls. I’ve been a fan of the style for sometime, but it isn’t always the easiest look to achieve. It can go wrong, oh so wrong. And you can be left staring at lopsided frames and holes from fallen soldiers. I have given my walls beatings and I wish I had thought it through a bit more before “eyeballing” it.  But the layout is only hurdle number one.

A good gallery wall is eclectic. There is a little bit of everything but an underlying cohesive nature to the wall as a whole. That doesn’t mean limit yourself, it doesn’t have to be only pictures. You can frame fabric, quotes, images, prints, color, black and white. It’s an endless list of possibilities. The downfall to that is sometimes too many options make it difficult to come to a decision and stick with it.

Sprinkle in the added challenge of landscape vs. portrait, frame size, measurement between frames and god forbid you throw a shape in the mix; people, I am having nightmares just writing this!  But fear not! I am here to give you a couple tips and examples to help you to achieve the gallery wall you have always wanted.  Some samples of gallery walls done right  below for you, incase you need a little creative inspiration!

FRAME IT

Framing your art can very easily and very quickly become an expensive project. Consider having one or two of your favorite pieces framed then an alternative for the others. Flea markets and goodwill are a great resource for that. Find existing art, pop out the image, spray the frames and bam! You have beautiful frames the compliment one another. Plus, variety is the spice of life!

PLAN IT

Sure life is fun when you are spontaneous. This is not the moment. Take it from someone who has lost some money due to holes in the wall. Lay your gallery out on the floor, to scale, and move your pieces around.  Not sure where to start?  Here’s a tip, start with your largest piece first. Build your other pieces around this as a focal point. Keep in mind large groupings of frames read better when they are tightly spaced (1-2inches) apart. Once you reach a place you feel good with, test it.

TEST IT

Once you have decided on your frames and your layout, cut down pieces of butcher paper to the same size as your frames. Using paint-safe tape, start to measure out and re-create your wall with the paper. Just because something looks good on the floor laid out doesn’t always mean it will read well staring back into your face.  Not sure where to hang your first frame? Start at about 5 feet up or eye level. If your ceilings are taller or you are, you can always give it a bump up.

SHARE IT

There are lots of great gallery walls out there. Share your hard work… Cause it was hard work, wasn’t it?! Get out there and brag. And be sure to share with us.  We always love giving credit where credit is due!

EST. SPOTLIGHT: AFFIRMATS + GIVEAWAY!

In the everyday bustle of our busy lives, it's important to take a minute to reflect on the present... on our everyday lives. You might find comfort in a song, a yoga class or a sunset - but whether you are struggling with a bad day, or you just need to push "pause" on life for a minute, little affirmations help keep our minds at ease.

In the everyday bustle of our busy lives, it's important to take a minute to reflect on the present. You might find comfort in a song, a yoga class or a sunset - but whether you are struggling with a bad day, or you just need to push "pause" on life for a minute, little affirmations help keep our minds at ease.

"I am Free."

"I am Wonderfully Made"

"I Radiate Love."

These simple sentences speak volumes and there is a company who is doing a stellar job at helping us to remember to enjoy the NOW and appreciate what is in front of us (you!) - That company is Affirmats.

Founder, Jason Graham, started Affirmats in 2012.  This is what he had to say about his journey.

"It all began from my Grandmother's living room when I was 8 years of age.  I used to lay on my back and make my spine bend backwards while catching myself with my hands.

This strange movement made me feel invincible and omnipotent.  I would perform this movement involuntarily day after day.  My family members thought that I was a peculiar, unconventionally bizarre kid.  While everyone else was outside playing sports, I was content with making my spine bend.

I was also a kid who talked to himself.  To say that I was eccentric would be an understatement.  I was far from common.  During the discovery of this spine bending phenom, I would strum the words, “I am Healthy, I am Wealthy, I am LOVE” over and over again.

Fast forward to 28 years later when I went to my first yoga class.  While in class, the instructor yelled out a pose called “Upward Bow.”  Me, being a novice, had no idea what this instructor was talking about.  Was I to look up at the ceiling?  Was this some sort of hybrid yoga hunting class? As I begin to look around the room, I saw something very familiar. I saw that spine bending thingy I used to do when I was 8.  Talk about an "AH-HA" moment.  I was beginning to feel quite nostalgic.  The spine bending exercise I was doing years ago had a name. It was called: UPWARD FACING BOW.  "I wasn’t crazy after all," I thought. "I have found MY PEOPLE!"

After about a year of taking yoga classes consistently, I learned how to shut off my mind.  If Upward Bow was my first and favorite pose, my second favorite was Shavasana aka Corpse Pose.  One day, while in this pose, I began reminiscing about my 8 year old self and how I would do Back Bends and utter the words, “I am Healthy, I am Wealthy, I am Love.”  Then it hit me.  I, then, realized that those words were affirmations and that I HAD to put them on a yoga mat for me to look at and manifest while I am practicing yoga.  It was at that moment when Affirmats was born."

We sat down with Founder (Jason Graham), Project Director (Kelsea Davis) and Sales Guru (Jessica Jablonski) to talk more about Love, Life and what keeps them inspired.

I stay inspired by….

Jason: Love, Dreaming, laughing, reading, reflecting, expressing gratitude, positive thinking, LIFE

Kelsea: The light in the sky. The colors change reflecting beauty while holding the power of the sun.

Jessica: Momma Ocean

She is the best reminder ... That this world we live in can be peaceful and tranquil, yet ferrocious and turbulent ... That we are all connected ... And that - no matter what - the tides keep on flowing in and out, and Life moves through.

On my Yoga playlist..

Jason:  "Washed Out" - Feel it all around / "Zero 7" - Swing / "Jamiroquai" - Alright / "Micheal Jackson" - Wanna be starting something / "Phoenix" - 1901 / "Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto" - The Girl from Ipenema / "Elbow" - Birds / "Beck" - Go it Alone / "Marvin Gaye" - Got to give it up / "Lenny Kravitz" - What goes around comes around / "Paul McCartney" - Silly Love Songs / "The Submarines" - 1940

Kelsea: Glasser- Tremel (Jamie xx remix)

Jessica: Long Time Sun -- Snatam Kaur / Bliss (I am the Light of my Soul) -- Sirgun Kaur & Sat Darshan Singh

My favorite Yogawear is…

Jason:  My Vneck t shirts from American Apparel, Lulu Lemon Yoga Pants and my Bandana wrapped around my head to prevent the sweat from getting in my eyes.

Kelsea: Teeki

Jessica: Splits59 (everything!!)

When I’m not on the mat, I’m….

Jason: Thinking of ideas to contribute to a better world Today.

Kelsea: Working with affirmats or taking pictures.

Jessica: Still on the mat!

Between being the Sales Guru for Affirmats and a busy, busy Kids Yoga Teacher I am always, happily, on my Affirmat. But, if not, I am probably in the Ocean ... (shocking, I know!)

Best advice I’ve received on balance:

Jason: Glance at the past, live in the present, and focus on the future.

Kelsea: For there to be bad, there has to be good.

Jessica: "Embrace the Beautiful Mess that You Are." If you cannot accept your good and your bad, how can you live a balanced, whole and happy life?

Current Mantra?

Jason: Om Brzee Namaha

Kelsea: I am Creative

Jessica: Rise and Shine On

My favorite thing about California…

Jason: Land of opportunity

Kelsea: Dynamic Vibes

Jessica: Its Sunshine.  I genuinely feel that it inspires people to Be Bright, follow their hearts and live their dreams.  It sure has inspired me :)

If I could travel anywhere with my Affirmat, I would take it…

Jason: To the moon

Kelsea: To South Africa

Jessica: To Bali

Best Hidden Gem in LA..

Jason: Maison 140 Beverly Hills Hotel.  It's a no frills Boutique hotel and I love the furnishings and small lobby bar.  It feels like a Bed and Breakfast.  A great getaway without getting away.

Kelsea: The hiking trail that you can walk from Sherman Oaks to the beach almost in Malibu.

Jessica: Little Dume, Malibu. Everything about it is pure Perfection.

The moment I feel in love with Yoga:

Jason: You had me at "downward dog"

Kelsea: In high school my Swim Coach started making our dry-lands practices yoga. I thought it was fun just to play and stretch instead of lift weights the first time I tried it. The next day I was so sore I could barely walk. It hit me instantly... I could have fun playing yoga and still get a work out from it. I became madly in love with Yoga immediately after playing on the mat.

Jessica: I fell in Love with Yoga years and years after I started practicing.  I have always enjoyed it but about three years ago I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and it became a Love.

Yoga taught me that I was strong, flexible and able to breathe through fear and discomfort.  I am convinced it helped me get through that really tough time.  I fell in Love with Yoga then, but my love grows more and more as yoga helps me enjoy this roller coaster ride of life.

HOW INSPIRED ARE YOU?! We definitely are!

After we got our hands on our own Affirmats, we knew we needed to share them with everyone. So we've teamed up with Affirmats to do a Giveaway (yay!)

To enter: follow @estcalifornia and @affirmats on Instagram - then, post this photo on your Instagram, tag #estgiveaway and tag three friends you think are AWEsome! We'll pick a winner October 10th at 12pm (PST)

DIY: 5 MINUTES TO A FLAWLESS FACE

This season’s makeup trends are taking a turn to the nude, it is the ‘No Makeup’ look with a healthy brow. If your skin is not perfect this tutorial will show you how to achieve flawless skin with minimal makeup in 5 minutes.

This season’s makeup trends are taking a turn to the nude, it is the ‘No Makeup’ look with a healthy brow. If your skin is not perfect this tutorial will show you how to achieve flawless skin with minimal makeup in 5 minutes. I have listed some specific products that I know work well and that my clients love. The rest you may have already or can purchase easily online.

WHAT YOU NEED

Products:

Goe Oil

Makeup Forever Full Cover Concealer (2 shades lighter)

Stila Powder foundation (2 Shades lighter)

Stila Powder foundation (your shade)

Bronzer (I use Scott Barnes in ‘Sundance’)

Powder Blush in your lip color

Anastasia Brow powder

Taupe eye shadow

Mascara

Cherry Chap Stick

Tools:

Large Powder Brush

Small Powder Brush

Blush Brush

Bronzer Brush (aka Blush brush)

Small angel brush for brows

Fluffy Crease Brush

Its not Magic. Its Technique. And its fast!

Step 1: Moisturize using Goe Oil. Lotion does nothing for my skin anymore. I am in love with natural oils and Goe Oil gel is my favorite. It penetrates the skin so it leaves you with a supple and dewy not greasy finish.

Step 2: Apply waterproof concealer with fingers under the eyes, down the nose, between the brows, on the cheek bones, brow bones and on the chin.

Why? This will add a pretty highlight and accentuate your features. It does not have to be perfect because it will get blended later.

Step 3: Powder with the lighter powder foundation using the small powder brush in the same areas you highlighted with concealer.

Step 4: Take the powder foundation in your color match and dust it around the rest of your face using the large powder brush. Lightly hit the middle of the forehead, dust across the cheeks and chin. Light handed! We still want the lighter areas to show through.

Step 5: Apply bronzer on the outer part of the forehead (around the hairline), temples, in the hollows of the cheeks and the underside of your chin and jaw.

Why? This adds dimension and carves out bone structure, which makes the face more dynamic.

Step 6: Apply a powder blush that is close to the pinkest part of your lips and lightly dust the cheeks, temples and eyelids.

Your almost ready!

Let it cook for an hour. Or to speed up the process, plank for 60 seconds and finely mist your face with water.

Translation: Makeup looks best after it has settled. The powders will settle in the oil and it will look like flawless skin that actually looks like skin!

Step 7: Next lightly fill in your brows using an angle brush and your brow powder. Accentuate the arch. Apply some taupe shadow in the crease using your crease brush. Using your angle brush apply some taupe powder along the bottom and top lash line.

Step 8: Finish with Mascara on both top and bottom lashes.

Step 9: Apply a lip color of your choosing. For daytime, I am loyal to cherry chap stick. It adds a slight tint and sheen with out overpowering your flawless complexion!

THERE'S A BONUS!!

To up the amp for the Fall season go with darker, bolder lip color. Add more taupe to the crease on your eyelid. This subtle pigment changes are bound to make you feel fabulous for the cooler months to come!

FallLook.jpg

Follow these steps for flawless skin for one week. It is all TECHNIQUE, so it takes practice. Give yourself time to learn a new skill. Stop wishing you could do your makeup and do the homework already! After 5 days you be trained to work your face over in 5 minutes like a pro. Forever.

Why this works? When you apply many light layers of makeup it looks as though you have no makeup on because the person isn’t seeing one flat color of foundation, they are noticing your bone structure instead. You get noticed first, not the makeup.

FIVE MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR GYM BAG

Let's face it.  The aftermath of taking an indoor cycling class leaves you covered in a whole lot of sweat and feeling a little less than glamorous.  Before you get on that bike there are 5 essential items you should always keep handy in your gym bag.

Established California | Health | Five Must Haves for your Gym Bag

Let's face it.  The aftermath of taking an indoor cycling class leaves you covered in a whole lot of sweat and feeling a little less than glamorous.  Before you get on that bike there are 5 essential items you should always keep handy in your gym bag.  I love these items and would not teach of take a class without them!

Face Wipes

I love Neutrogena Pink Grapefruil Cleansing Wipes.  They are by far my favorite product to have handy after class.  What I love about these facial wipes is that they are compact, you don’t need water, and they smell amazing.  I know a lot of us are sometimes rushed at the gym and washing our face right after a workout or cycling class usually gets forgotten.  These wipes are awesome because they are so easy to use and have a small amount of salicylic acid to keep any blemishes at bay.  If there is one piece of advice I could give everyone it would be to get a pack of these wipes for your gym bag stat.

Electrolytes

Cycling classes are super high intensity and cause riders to lose tons of water and essential electrolytes that need to be replenished before, during, and after class.  There are so many products on the market and I have always avoided these types of drinks because of the high sugar and calorie content that they usually contain.  The truth is, water is not always enough and I went on a mission to find the perfect product to hydrate my body.   I discovered Ultima Replenisher through a group of runners last year and have been hooked on it ever since.  This product is great because it is low in calories, has zero sugar, nothing artificial, and tastes amazing.  The packets or compact container can be stored in your gym bag and directly poured into your water bottle.  It’s super convenient and the lemonade is a little slice of heaven after an intense sweat session.

Pre and Post workout fuel

I am an eat-on-the-go kinda gal and keeping snacks with me at all times is a must.  If you are active and on the go you need fuel so keeping good quality snacks with you is super important.  I have three items that I do not leave my house without.

1) Quest Bars- By far my favorite protein bar on the market.  The only downfall is that Quest bars are high in carbs so i recommend them before working out. These are fantastic and do a great job at keeping my sweet tooth under control.

2) Apples-  I love them, they are easy to pack, delicious, great before or after class

3) Almonds - Trader Joe's sells almonds in single serving packs which is great because nuts are easy to go overboard on.  Nuts are one of my favorite post workout snacks.  Filling, nutritious, and convenient.

Dry Shampoo

Ever since I started working in fitness I discovered that washing my hair after teaching three times a day was not going to fly.  There are SO many dry shampoos on the market now, but my all time fave is Dove’s Refresh and Care dry Shampoo.  I love this stuff because it allows me to go longer between washes, doesn’t have a strong scent and leaves my hair feeling clean.  A lot of dry shampoos will still leave my hair feeling dirty which it why this product is great.  I would recommend spraying all over (especially your roots) drying your hair with a hair dryer in the locker room and round brush for best results.

Flip Flops

I never leave the house, or go to the gym without them.  Being a california native, I probably wear flip flops 11 months out of the year.  The last thing I want to do after a workout or cycling class is put socks and sneakers on. Bacteria from sweating accumulates in athletic shoes and you should take shoes off as soon as your workout is over and change to a breathable shoe.  Im partial to Havaianas but as a Californian native or not, flip flops are essential to your gym bag.

Key Product:

Lime Crime Uniliner in White

Established California | Beauty | NYFW Get the Look | Lime Crime Uniliner {White}

Prep:

1. Make sure your skin is moisturized before applying any makeup. This will help to use less product and avoid “cakey” looking skin. For a longer lasting look, apply a primer after moisturizing. Smashbox Photo Finish is always a solid go-to.

Tip: Don’t forget to prep your lips as well! Throw on a good lip balm for a soak while you apply the rest of your makeup. This way when you’re ready for some lipstick, you wont have to deal with dry and cracked lips.

Skin:

2. Apply a foundation with generous coverage and work your way from the middle of the face blending outward. This way you get coverage where it’s necessary without it looking like you’re wearing a mask. Then take your concealer and lightly add where needed.

3. Set your foundation with a translucent setting powder.  Gently apply the bronzer to the underside of your cheekbones in a soft, upward and outward motion.

Eyes:

4. Sweep a champagne eye shadow across your entire lid.

Tip: Doing so pops the eyes and helps to give a more “ethereal look”.

5. Line under your bottom lashes with a white eyeliner pencil. Take LIME CRIME’S Uniliner in White to your upper lid’s lash line to create a winged tip and a more defined line.

6. Use some white eyeshadow an angle brush to soften the edges.

Tip: A slightly imperfect line and less sharp wing softens the look.

7. To finish off the eyes, apply a couple layers of your favorite mascara to your top lashes and a light sweep to your bottom lashes.

Lips:

8. Use a cotton candy pink (MAC Snob is perfect) lip color here and set it with a translucent powder for a matte finish.

Tip: Try applying your lip color with a lip brush then soften the edges with the tip of a sponge.

MANTRA: Slow Your Roll

Life happens, and sometimes, it's not always rainbows and sunshine. Sometimes it's little stuff, sometimes it's big stuff. Either way we have absolutely no power over what gets thrown at us. What we DO have power over is in the way that we preserver through hardships.

man·tra

(noun) A hymn or portion of text used as an incantation or prayer.

My definition: Something I say to myself to keep me from freaking out when the proverbial caca hits the fan.

Established California | Health | Mantra | Honor

Life happens, and sometimes, it's not always rainbows and sunshine. Sometimes it's little stuff, sometimes it's big stuff. Either way we have absolutely no power over what gets thrown at us. What we DO have power over is in the way that we preserver through hardships. I'm not saying that I jump for joy when my car won't start, or do a cartwheel when someone says something hurtful. However, sometimes a few kind words to myself (a mantra) can help carry me through those moments with a little more grace and ease. It doesn't have to be a serious chant-like hymn, a mantra can be any combination of words strung together that brings you a little peace of mind.

Here's a simple, slightly silly one that I use almost daily in an attempt to fight the urge to morph into Speedy Gonzales in a busy moment.

SLOW YOUR ROLL.

Easier said than done, right? Agreed. We all run around like crazy these days and it's easy to forget to slow down enough to enjoy the ride. This one keeps me in check and I use it a TON, especially when I get so caught up in "busy" life that I forget to do simple things like :

Chew my Food. Always on the go, I often find myself inhaling food while standing, driving, walking, texting and even talking (gross!). I've unknowingly shown up to clients or classes with avocado on my face more than once, so that's my personal motivation to at least TRY to slow down and eat like a civilized human. That plate you're inhaling isn't going anywhere, Mary. Slow your roll!

Really Listen. If someone is taking the time to share a story with me, I want to make the time to listen, really listen. Sometimes I notice myself getting antsy and cutting people off mid-sentence when I'm "in a hurry" to get to the next appointment. Lame. In reality, an extra 5 minutes isn't going to make me late, or ruin my day. Actually, some days those stories inspire me and super-charge me for the rest of my day! Listen, Mary. Slow your roll!

Drive like a Normal Human Being (instead of a bat out of hell). There will be traffic. There will be accidents, construction, slow drivers, fast drivers, a tourist driving here for the first time (bless his heart!), but I have no control over any of that, and I never will. I'm in my car a lot driving from classes to clients, and sometimes I'm shocked at the amount of self-induced chaos that builds up in my brain due to driving. I'm working on allowing myself more travel time, and letting go of the circumstances that are out of my hands. Accidents happen when you're rushing around stressed about traffic and parking, Mary. Slow your roll!

Your mission (and mine as well!)

Choose to accept the bumps along the way and use "slow your roll" every time you find yourself racing through life at warp speed! As you navigate through your week, try taking the time to eat without multi-tasking, to truly listen to a story (even if it's long-winded), or maybe let someone go in front of you while sitting in traffic. You never know what you might see, or who you might meet when you slow things down a bit. Plus, maybe you'll make someone smile along the way. Give it a whirl and let me know (via e-mail or social media world) how it goes! I look forward to slowing my roll with you.

big love,

Mary

Five Functional and Fashionable Workout 'Do's

In California, there is no shortage of folks either hitting the gym, attending yoga class, spinning on bikes, running nature’s trails, or grinding at beach boot camps. Here are five of our favorite functional AND fashionable workout 'dos.

Established California | Beauty | Functional + Fashionable

In California, on any given day, there is no shortage of folks either hitting the gym, attending yoga class, spinning on bikes, running nature’s trails, or grinding at beach boot camps. Sometimes this makes you feel inspired or sometimes just guilty- whatever that feeling may be for you, you know you’ve got to get your workout on!

Whether on natural terrain or in the studio, going for high intensity or low intensity training, there is nothing worse than dealing with sweaty tresses that won’t stop falling in your face. You need to streamline those wispy hair ends and maximize your mane for your desired workout activity without the sacrifice of looking chic. It is possible to have a rockin’ hair while you are powering through TRX!

Just like you strategically pick out your trendy Lululemon wear, get creative with your workout hair so it will stay in place and not fall flat. There is no reason why you should always resort to a slicked back ponytail and headband. From styles made for yoga class to beach workouts, we’ve rounded up five do’s that will keep your hair looking fabulous no matter how you choose to burn calories. Grab a hair tie and some pins because you must give these styles a try…

Yoga/Pilates

A low positioned up-do is a must for Yoga or Pilates class. With constant mat work, you need a hairstyle that will not get in the way when on the ground in certain postures. Chic yet practical, this neck-exposed style is worth rocking and perfect for all those moves from the Pilates’ ‘Rollover’ to Yoga’s ‘Shavasana’.

Biking

Long distance biking is a popular workout choice in California.  Since safety is first, and a helmet is needed, you need a hairstyle that will not leave you in a sweaty mess or destroy your ‘do once you get to remove your safety gear. Take the classic low pony up a notch, and try this twisted ponytail. It is not only fashionable but also functional, as it will fit seamlessly under your helmet.  We love this tutorial from Caroline for Cup Of Jo!

Running Trails

A Throwback to many of our childhoods, the tiered ponytail keeps pesky flyaways under control by providing a foolproof polished look. Perfect for the trailblazing runner, this pulled back do will remain tight and in place no matter how windy it gets.

 Beach Bootcamp

Whether you are circuit training from station to station, treading through the sand or swimming yards in the ocean a beach workout can be very taxing on not only your sweat factor but your hair ‘do as well. Choose a badass hairstyle like this braided mohawk that will compliment the workout you are enduring. Far from your typical braided 'do, this style screams edge and when woven tightly will help your hair stay intact during the most extreme physical activity.

Gym Time

With the endless workout options at the gym, your hair ‘do has to be prepared for anything. Moving from the treadmill to the TRX to the bench press the last thing you need to do is halt your burn session and deal with dropping tresses or annoying ponytails hitting your face. A no-nonsense topknot, considered the ponytail’s sexier cousin, is an easy option that keeps your hair in place, out of the way, and off your neck. Choose to keep it sleek, add some volume, or enhance with a braid. No matter how you style your topknot, it’s chic…GUARANTEED!
