Meet Neri and Manu of the Australian-based clothing label, Ottway. Their collections are all vintage-inspired, unisex and made in limited numbers as part of a commitment to sustainable practice. Each piece has its own story, inspired by nature or their own family history which gives the brand that personal touch that can resonate within us all.
A SPOTLIGHT ON AUSSIE LABEL: OTTWAY
While I was traveling along the Great Ocean Road earlier this year, I stumbled across a local fashion label as I was scrolling through Instagram. I’ve always been someone who appreciates vintage, unisex fashion so I immediately gave them a “follow” and have appreciated them popping up in my feed ever since.
I was lucky enough to be able to chat with Neri and Manu and talk about the label and what keeps them inspired. The couple launched the retro clothing label in 2018, which was inspired by the tall forests, fern-filled gullies and waterfalls of Victoria’s Otway Ranges. Since then, they’ve also launched a sustainability program called Solo Sunny Days where some funds from every purchase go towards installing solar power in community buildings around Australia.

What’s a typical day look like for you?
Neri: Our days have changed a little bit due to everything that’s gone on this year, but we’ve placed an emphasis on slowing down, getting back to nature and connecting with our local community.
We’ve been working from home, so we like to start the day by going for a walk on Port Melbourne beach and Manu goes for a swim every morning. While Manu is swimming I do a workout or play with our little dog Suny - it’s so nice to start the day fresh.
From there we make a plan for the day, chat through our ideas and have a phone call with our team to put things into action.
We work closely together on the brand throughout the day, and Manu works hard on his other job at an international renewables company. We take breaks to explore our neighbourhood, meeting new people in the area etc. Covid was a really good opportunity to connect with our community as we’re usually travelling so much. It’s also been a great time to start working on our new store as we have more downtime.
What keeps you inspired?
Manu: We used to travel a lot for inspiration, but due to the challenging year that’s been, we’ve been at home a lot more. It’s pushed us to look for ways to find freedom when we’re not exactly free to roam our country or the world, so instead, we’ve enjoyed discovering our neighbourhood and exploring new ways to find freedom. That’s exactly what our latest campaign, Outside is Better, is founded on.
What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
Neri: Be confident with yourself. You have to believe in your dreams and fight for them. I think that’s the best because when you’re a teenager, you think everyone around you is better than you, but it’s not about that. You have to create your own life and believe that you can do it. You are amazing. If someone told me that I was going to be in Australia one day, a co-owner of a successful fashion brand and creating content for other brands I love, I couldn’t believe it. Honestly, I would say no, that’s not me, that’s impossible, because I love fashion, but to have that in Australia in an exotic country, that’s a dream.
What song(s) is a “must” for a road trip playlist?
Manu: Gloria by Them & Van Morrison! That song will always remind us of trips down to our bus in the Otways. We’ve also created a few playlists on Spotify for our community that are perfect for road trips. As well, Bob Marley is always an endless source of inspiration. We believe Music is Mood Medicine.
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
Neri: A lot of people don’t know that we’re actually from Spain. We’ve immersed ourselves in the Ottway brand and the Otway region so much that a lot of people assume we are from here when in fact, we moved across the world six years ago and we’re so happy to now call Melbourne home.
Manu: I still work full-time at a very demanding corporate job developing renewable energy across Australia. It is good fun and rewarding promoting a sustainable future!
Best thing you ever ate and where?
Neri: To be honest I just love Spanish food so much. I love the pinxos from North Spain, I love just having a huge spread and trying different things. All of them are so yummy. I love going from one bar to another and experiencing the variety - it makes the experience so much better.
What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling?
Oman was incredible - the desert and the oasis was stunning, with not many people around, just driving in the car to amazing spots. North China in the mountains was incredible - we went there for a product sourcing trip and took some time to explore. The people and the places were amazing.
What’s next for you?
We’ve been working really hard on our sustainability program, Solo Sunny Days, which sees that profits from each purchase are donated towards installing solar power into community-owned projects across Australia that are otherwise unlikely to happen. So far, three community-owned projects have been given the gift of solar energy and we’re looking for our next project.
In other exciting news, our flagship store has just launched! It’s something we’ve put so much work into this year and we’re so excited to finally have a place for people to come and see and feel the product, and a space for us to meet our customers face to face and to build community. We’re at 31 Sackville Street, Collingwood - come and say hola next time you’re in Melbourne!

Ah the golden state, good ‘ol California. You’ve seen the commercials to come visit. You’ve heard stories about the people who moved here to chase their dreams. But somewhere along the way, someone told you Californians were weird. They play on the beach all day, eat kale and bleed money. And we’re willing to say you’re right...
Ah the golden state, good ‘ol California. You’ve seen the commercials to come visit. You’ve heard stories about the people who moved here to chase their dreams. And you may have even at one point entertained the idea of living here yourself. But somewhere along the way, someone told you Californians were weird. They play on the beach all day, eat kale and bleed money. Who in their right mind would want to live in California?
And we’re willing to say you’re right, California is exactly what you think it is: Rich, beautiful and entitled.
We are rich, in people. We are rich with culture, diversity and unique lifestyles. The people here are not afraid to be themselves. And that darling, that is priceless.
We are beautiful, in mind, body and spirit. We take care of our bodies, both mentally and physically. We love each other and ourselves. We appreciate what it means to eat well. We feed our minds with knowledge and technology.
We are entitled. Oh we are so entitled. Be it ocean waves, snow caped mountains, or miles of forest, the scenery is beautiful. And there is something beautiful about a place that truly recognizes their great gift.
So you might find yourself asking, where is this going? Is this an ode to California? No. This is letting you in on our little secret, the golden state of mind. At Established California we are all about community, pursuing your passions and embracing your fears. And the funny thing is you don’t have to have a California zip code to live like that. See California isn’t just a physical place, but a state of mind. So how does one achieve this? Check out our tips to live the golden state of mind.
BE ESTABLISHED
Know yourself, know who you are, know what you want. Be confident in the things that make you, you! Own them, love them and embrace them. There is only one you out there, so be the best version of yourself. Knowing your truth and having the courage to live it and speak it is one of the greatest gifts of life. Being established in your life and who you want to be opens you up to receive what the universe has in store.
SEEK ADVENTURES
Get out there and live adventurously. Try something new, push yourself one step further, get in the last word, and make one last attempt. Each individual defines ‘adventure’ differently. There are no two adventures that are the same. So ask yourself what your adventure looks like. Find what your personal journey is and don’t be afraid to live it.
HAVE PASSION
Live each moment with intent, be passionate about everything you do. Never follow the crowd or live to please anyone other than yourself. Have a thirst and craving for life while staying thankful. Be passionate in love and loss. Do not be afraid to feel life’s emotions. And feel each of them with the utmost passion possible.
CHALLENGE FEAR
Fear can be one of life’s biggest enemies. The victory of challenging and overcoming fear can be one of life’s greatest rewards. To challenge in life provides a secret gift from the universe for the feeling of accomplishment far exceeds the feeling of fear. Don’t succumb to the initial fear of the unknown, conquer it, challenge it. For when you challenge life’s moments, the gift of triumph is plentiful.
LOVE LIFE. LIVE CALIFORNIA
A life can only be as full as you allow it. So fill it up and love it, nurture it and stay humble. To love the life you lead feeds the soul and gives hope. Standing with a grateful heart and treating each moment with grace and honestly can lead you to the life you’ve always wanted; a life that is full and at it’s core, happy.
To Live California is to embrace each of these traits, for that is what makes the golden state of mind so beautiful. And when you know what your version of California is, you can pass the gift to others. And to teach, that is the most rewarding gift of all.

EST. SPOTLIGHT: PLASTIC TIDES (VIDEO)
Living in California, I'm proud of our state and the community of people living in it, for really pushing awareness and action about single-use plastics. We've enforced laws throughout the state about reusable bags in grocery stores and encourage use of reusable water bottles in our airports, restaurants and more.

But, the problem is long from being solved so when I heard about Plastic Tides, I knew it was something to be shared.
Plastic Tides is a non-profit comprised of four dedicated adventure conservationists with the common goal of exposing our society's plastic problem. Their adventure began when co-founders, Christian Shaw and Gordon Middleton joined forces to address this major issue. Their passion for adventure and extreme sports only fueled their passion to keep their playgrounds clean. Living solely on stand-up paddleboards, the Plastic Tides team venture into remote locations around the world to raise awareness through novel means. Their expeditions give a unique opportunity for the documentation of our planet's beauty and the rampant plastic pollution that threatens it. Combining adventure and hard science, their approach brings fresh awareness to this serious problem.
"Our throw-away culture depends on single-use plastics. Stop reading this and look up: Is there any plastic around you? Water bottles, plastic utensils, yogurt containers, the infamous six pack rings.. these are just a few of many plastic products. Much of this plastic waste doesn’t make it to the recycling center, or even to the landfill. Plastic pollution is carried by rivers, animals, and the wind, eventually finding its way into the sea."
"In the ocean, indigestible plastic waste resembles dinner for many marine organisms. Working its way up the food chain, plastic may even end up on your plate next time you order the Fish of the Day. Its tendency to host a variety of toxic chemicals like BPA and PCBs, leads to bioaccumalation farther up the food chain, meaning that we are potentially poisoning ourselves."
Plastic Tides: Bermuda
The team recently returned from their first expedition that took Christian, Gordon, Celine and Julian around the beautiful island of Bermuda, via stand-up paddleboards, over the course of 11 days. They successfully collected surface plastic samples and microplastic samples to analyze the samples to see what concentrations were found. On a macro level, the team was saddened to report an immense concentration of plastic debris. It is clear that the problem is knocking at our doorstep and it's important to raise awareness to the public to come together to make a change.

We asked the team to recall one of their days traveling along the shores of Bermuda. This is what they had to share:
DAY IN THE LIFE
7:00 — Captain Williams Bay. The team is sound asleep in their tents.
7:15 — Gordon's alarm goes off. He wakes up and proceeds to sing pirate shanties at Christian and Celine until they wake up. We start getting coffee and breakfast ready which means firing up the denatured alcohol cat-food-can stove (an invention of Gordon's father, one gallon of denature alcohol lasted 4 people 11 days with extra!) to boil water. We boiled extra water to have in our Klean Kanteen insulated thermos's for making food throughout the day. Julian is still asleep.
7:30 — Julian is still asleep
7:45 — Julian is still asleep and snoring in wildebeest mode.
8:00 — The whole team is up and eating a breakfast of Backpackers Pantry granola with banana's and milk, coffee, and CLIF bars. The route for the day is discussed over breakfast.
8:30-9:30 — We all change out of our Buddha Pants and into our expedition clothes for the day then pack our things into various dry bags and cases. Packing was always a chore because of the sheer quantity of gear. It was typically an hour or more before all the gear was strapped down to the boards.
10:00 — Before launching we used an old glass bottle we found on the beach to take a water sample from the bay. It will be analyzed by Abbey Barrows of MERI in Blue Hole, ME for the presence of micro-plastics as part of a program through Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation.
10:30 — We push off on a rising tide as to avoid shallow jagged rocks that line the bay. We have a southwest tailwind and are looking to cover a lot of ground. The plan is to make the rest of the south coast with the wind and camp on Charles Island.
11:30 — After over an hour of dodging through the patchy reef line that guards the south shore we paddled over a mile offshore to take lunch well away form the treacherous coast. Lunch on the ocean isn't too hard when you have dehydrated food, hot water, and a strong tailwind to keep you moving in the right direction whilst eating.
12:30-16:30 — An hour of drifting gave us a good lead, but we got back to paddling as we were pushed towards shore. During the next few hours we took advantage of the tailwind to pull a trawl to sample for surface plastics. Our custom trawl was built for us by our collaborators at the Plastic Ocean Project and was specially designed for use behind a paddleboard.
17:00 — We near the north end of Bermuda and the Islands that occupy the entrance to castle harbor come into view. This end of the island is know for wrecks, most of which are marked with big white mooring balls. At this time, Celine decides she is too tired to keep paddling and she wants to try out her ENO hammock as a sail. Let's just say it was quite a spectacle that did not involve much sailing!
17:30 - Paddling into Castle Harbor is amazing as Castle Island, aptly named for it's 18th Century ruins, comes into view.
18:30 - After a swim and some cliff jumping off Castle Island we make berth on Charles Island for the night.
19:00 - There is a lot to do as we set camp and get down to preparing dinner for a hungry crew. The evening was always a time for taking care of gear, especially getting the cameras ready to go for the next day. We use solar power throughout the day to charge our batteries and keep our memory cards on rotation.
23:00 - After eagerly exploring the island and getting some amazing photos in the moonlight the team is off to bed for the night, except for Gordon, who is always up doing social media way past his bed-time.

After losing her mother to cancer in 2008, Kristi knew she had to do something to help women in the most vulnerable of moments feel more comfortable and beautiful than ever. A vintage inspired brand made up of romantic robes and delicates, Love Ophelia is the perfect thing to help women embrace their beauty and shine. Whether it be in the moments leading up to becoming a mother (they just launched a gorgeous new maternity line) or the moments leading up to being a bride, Love Ophelia has you covered.
Their goal is to make customers comfortable and gorgeous while providing every extra detail you can imagine in the process. With their collections made just a few miles from their office, they can stop in it at moment’s notice. But no matter the place you may have seen them, we’re here to tell you now, Love Ophelia is a brand you want to get on board with. Love Ophelia is “committed to a compassionate lifestyle, surrounding ourselves with beauty, and spreading love”. We were lucky enough to chat with owner and resident girl boss Kristi and get an insiders look at Love Ophelia.
Was there a defining moment that inspired you to create Love Ophelia?
I lost my Mom to Breast Cancer in 2008. At the time, my first son was just 8 months old. I had a career that sometimes required me to work 60 hours per week. I did some soul searching and realized just how precious this life is and how much I wanted to spent that precious time with my littlest love. Seeing what my mom went through physically and emotionally, I decided I wanted to create something that made women feel beautiful, despite their circumstance. It was then that Love Ophelia came to be.
What keeps you inspired?
Sleep. Seriously, I love to sleep, and lounge. Ha! I say “sleep” because I have a second baby now and realize just how important sleep can be! But in all seriousness, I am truly inspired by the strength of others. I once read a news story of a bride with terminal cancer. She had just months to live and wanted to bump up her wedding date so she could marry her love. I was so moved by her story that I sent her a robe for her wedding day that very day. I am inspired by that kind of strength, that beauty, that love. That kind of love that endures through adversity is truly inspiring.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
I would say, “Don’t doubt yourself, listen to your gut, cease opportunities. Oh, and in a few years, don’t judge that cute guy just because he is a single man driving a hunter green minivan. He is “the one.”
What do you love most about California?
Although I don’t go quite often enough, I love the fact that the ocean is just down the street. I can head down there, watch the surf, and just figure “stuff” out.
Favorite Sunday Brunch Spot? Why?
I love the Four Daughter in Manhattan Beach. Our family has been going there for a long time. It’s a small, family owned little spot along the coast of Southern California. It’s got such a warm, beach community vibe and is a perfect spot to take our kids. And, the food is great!
Favorite product from Love Ophelia? Why?
I love our Serendipity Robe. It’s our biggest seller and is, in my opinion, the perfect balance of cozy and pretty.
What do you love most about your job?
I love that I get to inspire other people to follow their dreams. I love helping a stressed out bride remember to just relax and drink in the moment. I love to be creative and I love the fact that I can say, yep, we are made in the USA…right here in Los Angeles!
What’s your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of every day is when I am hit out of nowhere with a little love tap from the universe. When I hear that little voice inside that says, “Yes, this is good. Life is good.” It’s so important to allow ourselves to just be happy in a moment, big or small.
What’s your dream CA vacation?
There is something so incredible about Big Sur. Two years ago my husband and I were driving up the coast on our way to Big Sur when we were involved in a car accident. It could have ended up really bad but we walked away with a crushed car, but otherwise unscathed. Instead of cancelling our trip, we rented a car and continued on to Big Sur. It was the best decision to go on in spite of the setback. Big Sur is incredibly healing and magical. I am so grateful for having had this experience and our decision to push through. It was a sweet reminder to continue on, despite your setbacks because something beautiful awaits!

We love workshops. Not only do you get to learn new skills and explore new creative outlets; but you also get to network and meet new people. To us, being able to connect with like-minded individuals, while exploring something you are passionate about, is what this whole community is all about. So today, we are so excited to share with you this post with from Taryn Sutherland, owner of Twinkle & Toast , and a look at one of her Calligraphy workshops in San Diego, CA.
Last year I've started instructing introduction to modern calligraphy workshops and they've really taken off! Recently I teamed up with my friend Melissa at Pow Wow Design Studio who graciously hosted me for a fun Sunday afternoon. Jasmine from Let's Frolic Together kindly came on board to snap all the fun.
The workshops are three hours long and I include all materials: ink, nibs, paper, customized worksheets, and more. I keep them intimate, with no more than 12 attendees. I go into detail about the history, terminology and techniques of pointed pen calligraphy and allow for plenty of one-on-one time while practicing. Their supplies are theirs to take home in a tote bag from The Printed Palette (designed with my custom calligraphy, as a collaboration)
Not only do I like for them to learn a skill with great detail, but it's important that we all have a fun time while out! I brought in some delicious bites from Water's Catering, treats Sweet Lydia's (topped with cupcake toppers from The Roc Shop), and of course wine from One Hope Wine. My friend Sarah from L&S Design Co. knocked it out of the park with beautiful floral arrangements to compliment this rad space. It's been amazing to see a community come together (both the awesome attendees and the vendors) in a creative and positive learning environment. It's a space we can have fun, network and learn from one another and try something new.

The name Nanga was inspired by one of the highest and most climbed mountains in the world, Nanga Parbat, located in the Himalayas.
Originally from Rio de Janeiro but currently living in San Diego, Roberta Cortat is Mila’s best friend and partner in business, bringing Nanga to California by uniting her passion for business, fashion, sports and beach lifestyle.
“For me, this is a dream. I always wear Nanga and a lot of people were asking me about my outfits. So I decided to introduce this brand to California and work with what I love to do. My goal is to establish the brand in California and very soon to the entire United States,” says Roberta.
The ideas are born of colors, art, nature... and it is precisely these details, together with quality material that make Nanga a unique brand.

We sat down with Priscilla, owner and designer, to talk a bit more about what keeps her inspired, her mantra and why she loves living in California.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I have been most inspired by the people who say I've helped or inspired them in some way, shape or form. It has really reaffirmed that I am on purpose & following my divine path.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
Being in alignment with my purpose aka doing what I Love for a living & using my gifts to create for the world everyday. It took me awhile to figure out, but I'm truly fed when I am being the Conscious Creator I was put on this Earth to be.
Do you have any tips for our readers that are trying to break in the industry?
Acknowledge what your gifts are & really take in what people tell you your amazing at, then keep doing whatever that is! Believe in yourself even when the naysayers seem louder than the supporters.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Oh man, a lot! But basically 5 key things:
1. Drive safe-(I've been in more accidents than I ever cared to have!)
2. Never be afraid to be fully yourself...you already are enough & you're perfect! Let your light shine.
3. Follow your heart & your inspiration & make every decision based from a place of love.
4. Your body is a temple & you only get one. Honor & respect yourself & your body.
5. You think you know...but you have NO idea!!! Don't worry about the future or the past. Just BE you...don't water yourself down or try to be like anyone else. Because the more you try to play small or be like someone else, the longer it'll take to find yourself.
What do you love most about California?
I love the ocean & the salty air! Living on the coast has been my life's dream. It is my sanctuary, my inspiration & my peaceful place.
What was the defining moment you knew you wanted to create Metta 8?
Having a successful yoga business named MettaYoga in Texas & finishing my BFA in Metals in 2011, I knew I wanted to create a line of jewelry For my thesis that embodied the energy & healing I had learned & found through my 10 years of teaching. I wanted to share this jewelry with the world & make pieces that were not only beautiful adornments but also powerful conduits to healing, manifesting, balancing, etc... These pieces are the anchor people can use to remind them of their own power as a spiritual being having a human experience.
What's on your current playlist?
Music plays a huge part in my creative process. Always in rotation are Jim James, My Morning Jacket & Andrew Bird. Recently I've been heavily into Ben Howard, Glass Animals, Wild Beasts & anything Justin Vernon has a hand in, he's brilliant. Along w/ Dr. Dog, Explosions in the Sky, Future Islands. And always in the cue is Miles Davis' Kind of Blue! The list goes on & on. I don't really get stuck on one thing for too long.

Add the fact that they are creating sustainable fashions that are eco-friendly and of course we have to share with you! We chatted with Elizabeth & Allen of Northwood Bentwood Rings to share a little bit more about their rings, their process and how they are different.
Tell us about your company and how you got started?
Northwood Bentwood Rings makes wooden rings from the bentwood technique. We are focused on using only eco-friendly and sustainable sources for our products, from the wood itself to the precious metals, and stone inlays that we use. Most recently we have branched out to include a mix of reclaimed gold or silver bands along with a wooden outer wrap.
We began in 2012, when my husband Allan presented me with my first wooden ring. We had been married 3 years and I hadn’t been able to wear a wedding band due to an allergy to gold. Having grown up on a farm called ‘Lot of Oaks’ the oak tree had always held a very special meaning for me. It was from Oak that my first ring was created, and I was in love with the uniqueness of my ring immediately. Allan, being the craftsman he is, didn’t stop there. He was in pursuit of the best wooden ring he could make, so I soon found myself with a whole lot of wooden wedding rings to choose from!
At the time we had been running a weekend coffee cart with freshly roasted coffee, another of our passions. Customers began coming for the rings as much as they did for the coffee and we saw a way to fill a need. We had heard so many stories of people not being able, or not wanting, to wear traditional jewelry, and we decided to close up the coffee cart and begin our adventure in serving this new crowd of people looking for something different.
What makes your company unique?
While wooden rings and the process of bentwood are unique in themselves, I think the most unique thing about our company is not what we do, but why we do it. We want to create a difference in our customers’ lives, our employees’ lives, and in our own. We have always strived to create not just the most beautiful rings, but also a community of artists and people with the same values. We believe that we can work together to create something different: A new way of living sustainably and showing our love for each other, and the environment, in a natural way.
That the jewelry trade that has been built on the backs of slave laborers and atrocious practices is becoming more and more well known, and I believe that it is up to us to stop the demand for these products. We believe there is a better way, and we know there are many others like us who believe in a future where these practices are stopped and where we know about how our products have come to be. We believe in transparency and in protecting the beautiful world, and its people, with safe, friendly practices.
We’re doing our best by creating the most beautiful product we can with friendly materials, and by providing a more unique and one-of-a-kind alternative that lovers and friends can use to express their feelings for their loved ones.
Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Allan and I have both had a lot of people throughout our lives that have inspired us, not least of which have been our customers and our employees, but to give a more straightforward answer:
For Allan, it has been the master craftsmen of the past. People like the metalsmiths who would spend days creating a simple weathervane that would be used on top of a barn roof, making sure every detail was perfect, and every curve was just as it should be even though it wouldn’t be viewed except from below. Their pride in their work was unwavering and always drove them to be at their best.
For myself, it was my grandfather. The man who built and cared for the farm that inspired our beginning. Before I was in school with my siblings I would spend the day with my grandfather while my mother went off to work. He was an inventor with a large workshop full of tools and I spent my days with him in that world of tools and tinkering. He would hand me my own blocks of wood, some nails and a hammer, and as a child I’d put together whatever came to me and let my imagination run wild. When we were done, we’d often walk through the acres of oak trees collecting acorns and leaves, and it was with him that I discovered my love for crafting and nature.
Where do you see your company heading in the future?
Right now we’re focused on bringing together and marrying the beauty of precious metals and wood in an equally sustainable way. We hear from a lot of our customers that while one partner would love a wooden band, the other leans more towards traditional jewelry and we believe we can make a bigger change by incorporating a sustainable alternative that would speak to them both. We understand that gold and silver jewelry has been a large part of the tradition of marriage in recent times, and we feel that we can work to source reclaimed materials to make this possible.
We are also working to bring together artists as employees, people with their own unique ideas and creative spirits who can help to bring our customers visions to life in their own way.

When I first discovered Local + Lejos their colorful approach had my attention immediately. Aside from the gorgeous patterns and vibrant colors, their mission left a lasting impression. Working directly with undiscovered artisans around the globe, each purchase of hand crafted goods provides an opportunity to create sustainable living. By supporting these artists, consumers have the opportunity to play a first hand role in empowering these artisans while getting a unique hand crafted piece in their home.
Founder and CEO Sheeva Sairafi's interest in culturally rich pieces began at a young age. But it was during a trip to South America, the summer after college graduation, that her appreciation turned into a passion to share. After spending time along side Peruvian weavers learning their culture, traditions and the art of crafting, Sheeva was left in awe of their unparalleled skilled. But in talking with the women, she soon understood their struggle to sell their products. Knowing these artisans needed a steady business, as they were at the mercy of tourism season, she and her sister took as many blankets back to the states as they could fit. Friends loved the items and Sheeva knew she had a unique opportunity. Local + Lejos was born to connect these talented artisans with consumers who may never have had the opportunity to find themselves abroad.
The literal meaning of their name Local {english} being or relating to a particular area and Lejos {Spanish} far away, distant was the perfect name to encompass the companies mission and purpose. Loving everything this company had to offer, We fired questions off to CEO Sheeva, to get some more insight.
What keeps you inspired?
Since starting this adventure a few months ago, I’ve met some really amazing people. This community of conscious individuals that are working to create opportunity in the world constantly inspire me. It has been so amazing to see people so interested in the mission of the company, and really care that every dollar they spend is going to something with meaning.
Favorite product you have created?
My favorite product I've created so far are woven baskets that are currently on their way from Rwanda. It was my first time working with this group of artisan women and designing baskets. Because we've had to work really hard together to get them right, these baskets truly embody the mission of Local + Lejos. By teaching the artisans new patterns and new ways to think about baskets, it has helped empower them to learn and try new things! As a bonus, the earnings from the work helped to but them chickens, goats, pigs and cows to help feed their families.
Favorite thing about Local + Lejos?
My favorite thing about Local + Lejos is that it encompasses my three biggest passions in life: beautifully designed product, business for social good, and adventurous travel.
What does “impact” mean to you?
To me, impact means something that is lasting. The mission of Local + Lejos is to create sustainable change in the communities we work with by empowering the women we employ, a powerful force that transcends outside of work and into everyday life.
How does California inspire your pieces?
The goal of Local + Lejos is to create pieces that can be used in every day life in California, so I’m inspired every day identifying products that would fit in the California lifestyle. The Striped Serape Blanket is a perfect example of this. The blanket reminds me of beach days in Venice, wine picnics in Malibu, and outdoor music listening at Coachella.
Favorite product in the line?
Right now, the Accessory Bag is my favorite product in the line. They are all one-of-a kind, unique, and so fun! I love that they can be used for almost anything, and are the perfect fun pop inside my black leather bag.

We are going crazy over these locally handmade purses and accessories from Rais Case! We love that each item is handmade and constructed with genuine Pendleton wool and leather - and with a variety of designs and styles, there's something for just about everyone.
Back in 2010, Julie Rais Ellis was on a search for the perfect laptop case. After being disappointed by what was on the market, she decided to come home and create one herself - not knowing what would happen after would change her life. A few failed sewing attempts, Julie decided to outsource to a local seamstress to collaborate on her design. She ended up purchasing ten cases, keeping one for herself and selling the other nine. It was then that Rais Case was born.
We were able to sit down with Julie to chat more about her California life and see below what she had to share:
Where did the name Rais Case come from?
Rais is my maiden name, and when I started off making laptop cases and thought it would be clever to call the bags Rais Cases.
What inspired you to start Rais Case?
I was an art teacher when I started this journey. I kept feeling a pull towards doing my own thing. After a disappointing trip to the Mac store to buy a laptop case, I came home from work and was inspired to sew one for myself. The case turned out pretty bad, but I really loved making it. The next day I was inspired to make another one and realized that the process of designing and making a practical product was exactly what I was searching for.
What’s your favorite thing about living in California?
I love that is so easy to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. I lived in Ohio for 22 years, we had long gray winters, which were pretty in it’s own sort of way, but it forced me to be inside nearly all winter.
Where do you source your fabrics you find?
We use a lot of Pendleton® wools, which are made in Oregon. I love this wool because it’s very well made and ages beautifully. I tend to pair it with leather, mostly black and tan leathers. Sometimes I come across other leathers that I can’t pass up, I’ll buy them and make special bags like the Camo Leather bag or Chaser Tote with the black and gold hide.
Favorite Breakfast spot?
It’s not necessarily my favorite spot, but I’ll admit I find myself at Starbucks too often grabbing an iced coffee and spinach feta wrap.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give your 16 year old self?
Anything is possible. (Seriously!)
What’s in your purse?
Once I realized I never reapply makeup throughout the day, I stopped carrying it. But, I always have my phone, wallet, keys, a Paper Mate Flair pen, diapers and wipes, and a notebook with my ideas and to-do list.
Quick lifestyle tip?
Have a selection of hats on hand! For those days when you don’t have anytime to do your hair.
What inspired you?
I get my inspiration from daily life, I like make things that I need or that I feel can be designed better.
I never leave home without…
A bag!
When you aren’t working, where can you most likely be found?
At home with Kaia or on a walk with our two dogs.
Which bag is your favorite?
The Vida bag is my favorite. I love the size of it and always have one with me.
How would you define a “Golden State of Mind”?
Fun, warm, light hearted, and a place where people are doing fresh and innovative things.

We recently were able to sit down with Tiana to find out more about her journey and what keeps her inspired. Here's what she had to share:
Where is the origin of the name GULL + MARIE from?
GULL + MARIE comes from two things that are very special to me. Gull, is the name of the sailboat I grew up with on Bainbridge Island in the Pacific Northwest. Marie, is my grandmother's name, one of my best friends and partner in crime.
What inspired you to start GULL + MARIE?
I needed a creative outlet from my full-time job at the time. I have known how to sew since I was a kid and I have always loved and worn the classic denim jacket. It was all just a random stream of thoughts one night when I was trying to fall asleep and it just clicked. I was like “I can to do this!” – it has been a lot of tiny steps leading to where I am today.
What piece of advice could you give for someone who wants to start their own business?
I would say to prepare to be working ALL the time – it never ends and there is always something to do. Be easy on yourself, this is something I have had to learn because I am very hard on myself and as the only person running my business there is always so much to do. Also, stay positive and keep on pushing ahead, there are hard days and you have to keep the faith that you are onto something. It is also the most rewarding thing I have ever done and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
If you could travel to one place in the world to collect unique fabrics where would it be?
I am dying to get to Morocco! Everything about the culture there draws me in.
What is your favorite thing about living in California?
Obviously, you cannot beat the weather! Being originally from the Seattle area, I love the sun and warm weather down here. One of my favorite things to do is just hop in my car and drive up the coast with the windows down and the music up.

Owner and designer Sarah Larson challenges her customers to ask questions, share their story and inspire others with adventure.

Returning to the states with a new approach to life, Sarah opened Often Wander to provide for others the feeling she found on the streets abroad. What was the defining moment you knew you wanted to create Often Wander?
I was traveling in Europe (mostly wandering Barcelona) and I was so inspired by absolutely everything. I was there to dance, but felt pulled in other creative directions, to create with my hands. I knew that when I returned to the states I wanted to explore making these new ideas that came to me while traveling.
What keeps you inspired?
{WANDERING} It's true. Honestly I'm inspired by things all the time but I definitely get the most inspiration when I venture to a new place. I’m really inspired by spaces as well, like big empty run down buildings are my absolute favorite. I also love to be sneaky and find these places, and maybe go where you're not supposed to be.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Don't doubt yourself. Do you, not everyone else. Be confident and explore your interests. Stick up for yourself. Be bold and brave. Say yes to new opportunities. Work hard for your dreams.
What do you love most about California?
It seems like anything is possible in CA. We have the best of everything. This place is incredible. I've lived here for 10 years now, and I still pinch myself that I live here. I love the people in CA too. We're all chasing our dreams together and it's really inspiring and I'm happy to run along side them.
What is your favorite part of the day?
Definitely dusk. The air changes, the moods shift, and it's usually when I get my second wind. I also love right before the sun rises. I'm not usually up early enough to enjoy these moments but when I do, it feels like time is stopped and the most beautiful light shines on the city and makes me buzz with inspiration.
Favorite product in the store?
Well, I love my candles, a lot. I'm also currently digging the new diffusers I've been making. I'm hooked. I also love all the beaded bracelets/wrapped bracelets/bangles in the shop. I love a good stack, so it's fun to play around with them!

Water Margin Studios, spawned by a sister-brother duo inspired after a trip abroad as well as the wish to get back to their craftsman roots. Mei-ling and Jonathan Hubbard, desired to make something more than simply utilitarian; something highly functional, ergonomic, well made, exceptionally beautiful, and local.
My twenties are coming to an end and my birthday is swiftly approaching. I can see my 30s coming towards me not like a freight train about to barrel me over, but like the carousel that is already in full rotation and I got to find a way to jump on quick or I’ll be left standing waiting for my next opportunity feeling like the kid that gets picked last, except its my own damn fault. In a life that is not how I pictured it, this is scary, but I have one consolation-- finally, I can unashamedly say out loud that I like exquisite foreign knives, fancy tumblers, expensive bowls, and beautiful hand crafted cutting boards.
Cue Water Margin Studios, spawned by a sister-brother duo inspired after a trip abroad as well as the wish to get back to their craftsman roots. Mei-ling and Jonathan Hubbard, desired to make something more than simply utilitarian; something highly functional, ergonomic, well made, exceptionally beautiful, and local. This led them to what other than kitchenware! Cutting boards and spurtles to be exact.

Water Margin Studios is located in the Los Angeles hills and one can often hear ACDC coming from the studio as Mei-ling and Jonathan design, carve, sand, and perfect their goods. The cutting boards are made in limited batches cut from the same plank of wood, each piece is unique with contrasting hardwood inlay placed to complement each boards grain. Then the finishing process begins, starting off with some sanding. “Are you hitting that with a 400?” Jonathan asks. “I’m gettin’ it with 500” Mei-ling reports. Over a period of 3 days the pieces undergo a multi-stage washing, oiling, and sanding process. Attention to detail extends to the packaging. In keeping with Japanese aesthetics, Water Margin Studios wrap each piece in their hand-dyed shibori fabric.
Okay so what is this stuff really like? GLORIOUS. I asked to hold the brownie ax. At first touch I exclaimed, “Oh my god… this feels… great.” Soft, easy to grasp, beautiful to all the senses. I felt whole-heartedly home.
And if you are as in love with these pieces as I am, keep your eye on Water Margin Studios. The siblings hope to further combine their skillsets to create slab furniture within the year.

With their fabulous one of a kind clutches and purses and now expanding another branch of camera straps known as LBLA+TK (launching less then a week ago); only being three years into it, they are showing us that following your dreams and passions are a must.
Kim Proacam, Founder of LoveBirdsLA, fell in love with the use of color in textiles through her travels throughout Peru, Thailand and the Phillipines. She then, with a long time friend, created LoveBirdsLA. She fell in love with their cultures and the use of colors that she wanted to find a happy marriage between her love for fashion and travel.
Taryn Kent, partner in the LBLA+TK collaboration of vibrant camera straps is a professional photographer specializing in lifestyle, editorial and travel. Taryn, being a California native herself has known Kim since childhood but only in their adult lifetime became close because of a mutual friend.
Now, we'll take a closer look at these California native super cool chicks!

What piece of advice would you give to someone that is looking to take the leap and start something of their own?
Kim: One of my favorite quotes is “ a year from you now you will wish you had started today” . I love inspirational quotes (as you can tell if you follow me on IG) I really believe you have to just take that risk and go for it. The longer people wait, the more doubt they create. Just DO IT!
Taryn: Be prepared to work your butt off and then some! There’s so much more work to do when working for yourself than I ever imagined! But it’s worth it if you’re doing something you love.
You were inspired by your travels, which was your favorite place and why?
Kim: Ahhh, there are so many! If I really had to pick one it would definitely be Peru. I loved the culture and textiles there! Machu Picchu is the most amazing place! It’s no wonder why it is one of the new wonders of the world!
Taryn: Ah such a hard question because I tend to fall in love with everywhere I go! ha! I’d have to say New Zealand...that place blew me away with its beauty and how untouched it was -- and the people were so friendly. Dying to get back there for another trip!
Do you remember where you were when you guys decide to do the camera straps?
Kim: I was at a party talking to the photographer and he had mentioned that I should start doing bags for photographers. That was an “ah ha!” moment. I naturally turned to Taryn to see what her thoughts were and we decided to start with camera straps!
Taryn: The idea kinda came about over email. Kim reached out to me for my opinion about a project & maybe working together on something…which then turned into camera straps. We met for coffee one night in LA to brainstorm and it all snowballed from there!
What are your hobbies?
Kim: Right now I’m currently training to be a pilates instructor. I started as a client and fell in love with it! Now I wish I could have all my spare time in the studio.
Taryn: Traveling, taking my dogs to the beach, yoga, pilates, going to see bands play, trips in our RV, bike rides, reading.
What is your ideal Saturday?
Kim: After my son falls asleep, my favorite thing to do is rent a couple dvd’s and just drown in movies all night with my husband.
Taryn: One that I don’t have to work! If I’m actually in town, my ideal Saturday would start off with a yoga or pilates class followed by brunch with my girlfriends…afternoon spent chilling with my boyfriend at the beach, followed by a walk with our pups to our fave sunset spot, ending with a dinner & movie night together with some wine.
Define a “California girl”:
Kim: Beach wave curls, sandals, and a tan all year round. Although that’s more of a southern California girl. We have so much around us. California might be one of the only states where you can go snowboard in the am and hangout at the beach in the afternoon to sunbathe.
Taryn: Active, fun, smart, adventurous, happy, loves to laugh.
What are your top 5 favorite stores to shop at (online or offline)?
Kim: Zara, Shopbop, Cotton on (kids), Sephora, Ebay – I love a deal!
Taryn: Zara, Free People, Pigment, Shopbop and thift stores
What are your beauty must-haves?
Kim: I MUST have lip balm with me at all times! Other than that a great daily moisturizer and facial sunscreen. It’s all about staying hydrated and moisturized.
Taryn: Bumble & bumble does it all styling spray, Nars matte velet lip pencil in dolce vita, Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! mascara.
Quick lifestyle tip?
Kim: Don’t let work consume you. IT’S NOT WORTH IT. When people are older and look back at their lives, you never hear anyone saying “ I wish I worked more”

These simple sentences speak volumes and there is a company who is doing a stellar job at helping us to remember to enjoy the NOW and appreciate what is in front of us (you!) - That company is Affirmats.
Founder, Jason Graham, started Affirmats in 2012. This is what he had to say about his journey.
"It all began from my Grandmother's living room when I was 8 years of age. I used to lay on my back and make my spine bend backwards while catching myself with my hands.
This strange movement made me feel invincible and omnipotent. I would perform this movement involuntarily day after day. My family members thought that I was a peculiar, unconventionally bizarre kid. While everyone else was outside playing sports, I was content with making my spine bend.
I was also a kid who talked to himself. To say that I was eccentric would be an understatement. I was far from common. During the discovery of this spine bending phenom, I would strum the words, “I am Healthy, I am Wealthy, I am LOVE” over and over again.
Fast forward to 28 years later when I went to my first yoga class. While in class, the instructor yelled out a pose called “Upward Bow.” Me, being a novice, had no idea what this instructor was talking about. Was I to look up at the ceiling? Was this some sort of hybrid yoga hunting class? As I begin to look around the room, I saw something very familiar. I saw that spine bending thingy I used to do when I was 8. Talk about an "AH-HA" moment. I was beginning to feel quite nostalgic. The spine bending exercise I was doing years ago had a name. It was called: UPWARD FACING BOW. "I wasn’t crazy after all," I thought. "I have found MY PEOPLE!"
After about a year of taking yoga classes consistently, I learned how to shut off my mind. If Upward Bow was my first and favorite pose, my second favorite was Shavasana aka Corpse Pose. One day, while in this pose, I began reminiscing about my 8 year old self and how I would do Back Bends and utter the words, “I am Healthy, I am Wealthy, I am Love.” Then it hit me. I, then, realized that those words were affirmations and that I HAD to put them on a yoga mat for me to look at and manifest while I am practicing yoga. It was at that moment when Affirmats was born."
We sat down with Founder (Jason Graham), Project Director (Kelsea Davis) and Sales Guru (Jessica Jablonski) to talk more about Love, Life and what keeps them inspired.

Jason: Maison 140 Beverly Hills Hotel. It's a no frills Boutique hotel and I love the furnishings and small lobby bar. It feels like a Bed and Breakfast. A great getaway without getting away.
Kelsea: The hiking trail that you can walk from Sherman Oaks to the beach almost in Malibu.
Jessica: Little Dume, Malibu. Everything about it is pure Perfection.
The moment I feel in love with Yoga:
Jason: You had me at "downward dog"
Kelsea: In high school my Swim Coach started making our dry-lands practices yoga. I thought it was fun just to play and stretch instead of lift weights the first time I tried it. The next day I was so sore I could barely walk. It hit me instantly... I could have fun playing yoga and still get a work out from it. I became madly in love with Yoga immediately after playing on the mat.
Jessica: I fell in Love with Yoga years and years after I started practicing. I have always enjoyed it but about three years ago I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and it became a Love.
Yoga taught me that I was strong, flexible and able to breathe through fear and discomfort. I am convinced it helped me get through that really tough time. I fell in Love with Yoga then, but my love grows more and more as yoga helps me enjoy this roller coaster ride of life.

Girls just wanna have fun, right? Well Jordan Jones at Packed Party is proving that to be true. A transplant from Texas, this free spirit moved to California seeking adventure and embarking on a new job. But in making the move to the golden state, Jordan found herself without her friends, with little to no social calendar and ultimately fired from her job for pursing an idea she was passionate about, Packed Party.
It was just under one year ago she decided to throw caution to wind, took a true leap of faith and started Packed Party. As a teenager Jordan had experienced mean girls in high school, but never allowed that to get her down. She would commonly throw a ‘party for one’ and now in her early adult years, alone in San Francisco, that party for one had found its way back to her. Feeling down on herself and throwing what we are all guilty of having every once in awhile, a pity party, Jordan got a bright idea. Wouldn’t it be great to send a packaged party to friends when life’s moments get them down, or up!
Sure she may have been in the land of entrepreneurs and start-ups mere miles from the Silicon Valley, but she was just a regular Texan girl chasing a California dream.
After convincing her family to invest in her idea she grew her company from packing parties in her garage to a warehouse shipping internationally. She took a little idea and grew it into something great. Believing in her creativity and feeling established in her sense of self, suddenly Jordan was building a business and surviving on her own.
The ideas for parties are endless, although Jordan is selective about the product she uses and the themes of packages. Carefully selecting and sourcing product to offer unique packages, these parties are in demand. The Miss you Bitch party is restocking for the sixth time!
It’s your party and you’ll cry if you want to? That’s fine, there’s a party for that! Paying homage to how it all began, Packed Party offers a Pity Party for that friend who is singing the blues, or in this case navy. Why navy? The answer is simple, it’s feminine and goes with just about anything! And as Packed Party grows they work to develop packages you can send to all you friends, including guys. And guys love Navy!
We had a chance to talk with Jordan about all things Packed Party and how she purses her own golden state of mind. Here's what she had to say:
Leaving your job to pursue this venture must have been a scary decision. When did you know taking the leap of faith was right?
I think it’s hard to know a good time to ever really take the leap to pursue what you love full-time. There’s always going to be major risk involved and I was in the process of weighing out the risk when I was sort of pushed out of my job in Silicon Valley for actually working on Packed Party.
Today I get it of course, and know it was the best thing that ever happened to me, but at the time I was a little mortified. I had never so much as been sent to the hall in elementary school for getting in trouble, so it came as a bit of a shock to me when they said I had to choose between working there or running Packed Party. As it turns out though, as embarrassing and scary as it was being let go of for pursuing my dream, they made the best decision for me and the whole experience gave me the major push I needed to pursue Packed Party full-time. Immediately after I created our blog, added new packages to our line, and gave that extra time I was giving to someone else’s dream to my own.
What keeps you inspired?
Living in San Francisco makes it easy to be inspired to be totally honest. I try to go on a walk every single day at some point and take a different path. The colors on the houses around the neighborhood, hearing the buzz around the city, and hearing people’s stories of starting businesses pushes me. I read a lot of magazines, blogs, and am on sites like Pinterest daily. I feel like I really resonate with stories like Sophia Amoruso’s Girl Boss, I read it in two days and felt so personally connected to how she started, all the sacrifices she made, having her mom help her, and saying “we” when it was just her in the beginning…guilty as charged here for doing it too.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
I think I’d tell myself chin up, it’s only getting better from here, high school is just a small snippet of your life. Oh, and also, you’re never going to use the math you’re worrying over right now! Numbers aren’t my strong suit.
What brought you to California?
Truthfully? I just loved it here. I had only visited California a few times, and San Francisco one time before deciding I had to move here. My parents, of course were in shock when I told them it was what I was going to do, but they agreed and said if you have a job you can give it a shot. Sure enough I found a job at a startup doing events, and was on my way with a U-Haul behind my car a few short months later leaving all my closest friends and family behind in Dallas. I didn’t leave because I didn’t like Dallas, I just felt like there was something more for me waiting in San Francisco, and little did I know that it was Packed Party.
Favorite Sunday Brunch Spot?
Is it cliché to say my favorite meal is brunch? Probably. But I love Zazie’s here in the city, it’s in Cole Valley, and the people that own it are so nice, they recognize me every time I come in (or at least pretend to!). I love southern hospitality and homemade food, so this place combines both.
Favorite type of party to have?
In life? Probably a dinner party. I don’t have them much here in San Francisco because my space is a touch tiny (I call it the Polly Pocket apartment), but definitely a dinner party! Having people over and planning everything from the flowers to the music and place settings is something I learned from my mom and share a love with her over.
What is your current party playlist?
I love music, I always have! I listen to a lot of rap. Kidding. I like a mix of everything though! Mat Kearney is always a go-to for me; his music just feels like home sort of no matter what I’m doing I can throw it on. Listen to “Closer To Love” by him and try not to tap your toe. I’m also really into Broods right now, they’re so young and their music is amazing!
What do you love most about your job?
That’s a really difficult question. There’s nothing I don’t love about it, so I should probably start by saying that. Packed Party doesn’t feel like work because it is truly the most fun thing I’ve ever done. Every day is something different and I love that about it because I’m such a creative person it’s hard for me to do the same thing over and over again. I love laying out the photo shoots, writing the blog, meeting so many new people, and being introduced to new and unique products. I created my dream job for myself, so I can’t say there’s anything I don’t love about it.

In the small surf town of Encinitas, CA lies a unique jewelry boutique called NoniLove. Opened by designer, Tawnya Proctor, NoniLove features local clothing designers and brands - alongside her beautiful hand-crafted jewelry. Established California sat down with Tawnya to talk about what her style and what inspires her most.

Tawyna Procter is a master of many trades. Hair dresser, jewelry maker, boutique buyer, photographer, stylist and over all.. a creative soul. After moving home from Hawaii, she and her mother rebranded their family salon, a few block from the beach in Leucadia, to Noni Salon. She had always had the love for creating things and during her residence in Hawaii, she began making bangles with local shells she would find. Being influenced by her grandmother, who was a jewelry designer, Tawnya would take the seashells she would find while diving and create unique bangles. She originally began NoniLove jewelry to sell in the salon and it soon evolved into different lines. She soon began shipping her pieces to clients all over the world and selling her jewelry in boutiques in California and Hawaii. The style of her jewelry captures the essence of beach life with pearls, shells and unique stones.
How would you describe your own personal style?
I would describe my style as a laid-back Southern California girl with a rock'n roll edge. But I could easily also be a minimalist and wear a great pair of jeans with a staple tee.
How does your style influence what you create for your jewelry line?
Living on the California coast is where I draw most of my inspiration from. I am also inspired by leafs, colors, and the music my parents listened to while I was growing up. We were always listening to Journey, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles.
When finding designers and pieces to sell in the store, what do you look for?
I have worked hard to build relationships with girlfriends who have their own bikini lines in Hawaii. I follow trends and make frequent trips to Los Angeles to find designers I really adore.
When you get dressed in the morning, what do you pick out first? Clothes or jewelry?
Neither! I do my hair then choose my jewelry.
When you are not working how do you spend your free time?
I spend most of my time with my family and friends. Aside from that, I enjoy photography and love getting inspired by things. I love to "create" and I'm always creating something.
What is your biggest creative influence?
My grandpa. He instilled a lot of strong characteristics into me, including the value of a good work ethic. I admire how well he built and created things also. He taught me to keep busy and work hard.
What are some of your sources of inspiration?
I am inspired by the ocean, music and people-watching out the window. I like to build a scene with each model I use for my line and create a story for her. I like to envision that each model I use for my line is the same girl traveling through a different period in her life.

Four women bring their California roots, creative eye and a passion for storytelling to their latest digital venture - a website called Established California. With Palm Springs being the backdrop for their weekend adventure, they delve into the lives of the website’s founders and what "Established California" is really about.
Leave it to the ladies of Established California to choose Palm Springs as their first team building retreat destination. With it's stunning desert scenery, 350 days of sunshine and a convivial “village atmosphere that has been preserved…” (Visit Palm Springs), this quintessential California getaway entices visitors alike: to seek adventure, ignore the presence of time and always have ‘Fun in the Sun’ and beyond.
The sun has gone down, but the night is young, when I first meet Nicole, Lindsay, Megan and Eleni. Their mid-century vacation home is nothing short of fabulous and pristine. I’m immediately greeted with laughter and a cocktail. By the calmness in the air, you wouldn’t have the faintest clue they're just settling in after spending five long hours in the car (due to Labor Day traffic) or that they are on the brink of their biggest adventure yet, looming 72 hours away…The official launch of Established California.

Barefoot and all smiles, the only thing on their mind is what’s on the menu? Lindsay with a big grin says, “I’m starving” and volunteers Nicole to prepare her favorite: heirloom tomato and burrata cheese salad for dinner. It’s obvious they’re sisters with their playful, but demanding, banter. Megan and Eleni chuckle at the bickering, when Megan suddenly asks, “Eleni… is that what we sound like?” Eleni smirks at her sorority sister/college roommate and without skipping a beat replies, “Absolutely.”
With satisfied stomachs and refilled beverages, team building is in full swing. The ebb and flow of creative energy is infectious. The best way to describe their dynamic is like a verbal Pinterest board. From their newest fashion finds to sharing photographs taken on a recent adventures, the conversation is always bouncing off one person to the next. They embrace each other’s voices. It’s humbling to see a powerful team of strong creative women working together for a common goal. Although, tomorrow will bring a jam-packed day, they're burning the midnight oil.

Dawn is barely peaking its head over the gorgeous mountaintop, as if it's mocking me, as I sip my espresso so I can begin to function. Yet, our ladies are ready [in full hair and make up]; prepared to shoot promotional head shots for their homepage. Having spent the last six months developing the website, it’s finally "Go Time". As Lindsay talks with Megan about a few different camera looks, Eleni and Nicole chat at the breakfast table about what’s in store for the day post-photoshoot. It appears to be just another day for the ladies of Established California.
The website is clearly a direct extension of the founding ladies’ vision of life. Lindsay gushes that, “Established California is an interactive platform for the curious to explore and share their version of the California experience; The personal pursuit of the Golden State of Mind”. Eleni goes on to say, “For us, it is not about being California tastemakers but rather creating a diverse, accepting, creative community.” Hearing this, I can see how their content will celebrate and share all things we all find, explore and love in the Golden State - enabling us the opportunity to experience it together. Everyone has the ability to have a little California Sunshine in their lives.

After wrapping the photoshoot and a handful of creative meetings, the team demands that it's time to enjoy some in the city. Trying to beat the heat, but failing as it’s already 105 degrees… they head out to explore Palm Springs and shed light on some uncharted destination spots. “Each of us see life differently... and it is our innate gift. One person's 'California' story will never be the same as another.” explains Megan in the front seat. “It’s through our conversations, the snapshots we capture and the way we each express our love for this lifestyle that writes a journey that is exclusive to each of us, individually. It would be a shame to not share that and ask for others to share their versions as well” Nicole chimes in.
As we arrive into Downtown Palm Springs, we finally settle in for some Authentic Mexican Cuisine at Las Casuelas (in true California fashion). With the success of their day and a few rounds of Margaritas {Vodka soda for Megan}, I start to discover the children at heart behind these business women sitting at the table.
You can learn a lot about a person over the course of a weekend, like what makes them tick - or what their childhood ambitions were. Lindsay had an infatuation with all things Jack Dawson from James Cameron's "Titanic". At the age of twelve, she produced and distributed a monthly "Titanic" themed newsletter to over 500 people. Megan, since the age of five, had the same unfading childhood dream to host a talk show. Nicole, in the infancy of her career, found herself based primarily in New York for two years. She woke up one day and decided to get the outline of the State of California tattooed on her wrist as a rebellious reminder of where her heart resides. While Eleni, obsessed with fashion trends, would compile Polaroid look-books to share with her closest of friends. It’s apparent that these ladies, who all have similar yet unique destinies, were imprinted at a young age for this venture they had in front of them. I can't help put admire the unique connection between what they have done traditionally and this new venture has in store for them.

Another morning of grogginess was upon me, with a shot of bittersweet nostalgia; the women of Established California have reminded me of home. Although we have to say our goodbyes shortly, the impression they left on my heart has been matched by my excitement of their new launch and how they will imprint the world. Their zest for life {and the backdrop of Palm Springs} has made this storybook trip absolutely perfect. As I enjoy our time together, the reaction I’m feeling from the weekend can only be described as inspired. Like them, I want to embark on a journey of my own.. wildly and inventive terms; thus I am Established California.

I look to see what kind of art is on the walls, who is in that picture frame, how the table is set, what is the underlying color scheme. I tell you, attention to detail is never wasted on this houseguest! I love rooms that tell a story and show the personality of the people living there.
