WHEATGRASS & WHISKEY
It's taken me years of soul searching to finally come to this conclusion: I'm a little bit of wheatgrass and a little bit of whiskey. I've proven to myself repeatedly that I have the propensity to slide to either end of the spectrum. Now my work is to find balance between the two. I am a constant work in progress, but even just acknowledging that I have both sides in me has taken a huge burden off of my heart.
I may be able to rock a tree pose with the best of 'em, but I am extremely balance-challenged when it come to life. I'm constantly striving to figure out what to hold on to and what to let go of, what to indulge in, and what to restrict myself from. I'm forever on the hunt for that sweet spot between not enough and too much of any given person, place or thing. My whole life I've struggled with balance and with accepting ALL aspects of myself- the good and the bad.
I was raised Southern Baptist and my father was a minister from the time I was born until I was 16 years old (yes, I am a preacher's daughter!). I went to a very conservative, very sheltered private Christian school until high school, and always felt pressure to be some angelic, flawless version of myself that was unnatural, not to mention unattainable. I wasn't terrible or anything- I was a pretty good kid with a big heart and a soft spot for other people and animals. I made good grades and didn't really break too many rules, but something about that restricted, sometimes judgmental way of life never fully resonated with me. I thought I'd grow out of it- maybe I was just a rebellious preacher's daughter? I didn't. Once I was released into the wild (aka public high school), I saw all kinds of different styles of living. I was fascinated! I wasn't even aware that there were so many different flavors to life! I snuggled right in with the meat-is-murder/express-yourself-though-music-and-art-crazy-haired group and felt right at home there. I felt accepted not despite my flaws, but maybe even because of them. I felt free! So free, however, that I decided to start skipping school and spending my allowance on wild turkey 101- opposite end of the spectrum by far. whoops!
I found yoga and meditation when I was around 17 years old though. It was an accidental discovery- truthfully, I was searching for a workout that would give me "Madonna arms" and I heard she did yoga, but somehow (thankfully) I ended up in the arms of a group of middle-aged women doing restorative yoga and meditation. It didn't give me sculpted arms, but It truly changed my life. I discovered there was a way to tap into that big hearted spiritual side of me without losing that sense of self-acceptance, and without all the pressure and judegement. I discovered wheatgrass shots, got into nutrition, wellness and exercise. I was enchanted by how bodies function and how they can be healed through food, movement, and meditation.
I'd love to say I stuck with yoga from then on, but that's not what happened. I stuck with it for a while, then journeyed back over to the party side again. It's like I was in the middle of a giant life teeter-totter- Wheatgrass Mary on one end, Whiskey Mary on the other. How could I have such opposing creatures living inside my soul?!
Struggling with how a preacher's daughter "should" be later transformed into struggling with how a yoga teacher "should" be. When I first began teaching, I thought I had to be this perfect vision of health and wellness all the time, this ever positive shiny light no matter what was going on below the surface. While all that is a huge part of me, it isn't me 100 percent of the time though. I do genuinely enjoy doing cleanses and fasts, meditating, restricting my diet, and working out, but I just as thoroughly enjoy drinking, socializing, eating pizza, and being lazy. I can wake up at the crack of dawn, meditate and shoot wheatgrass all day, but can just as easily kick back, shoot whiskey and shake my booty all night!
For me, a giant part of finding that balance is accepting all sides of myself- the good and the bad, the light and the dark, the wheatgrass and the whiskey. I'll always be a bit of both, and I am (finally) ok with that. Another tricky part is letting go of what other people think while holding on to my own personal truth. It's way easier said than done, but I am dedicated to being authentically me regardless of what others think. I am learning to have unshakeable faith in what I'm doing, in who I truly am (flaws and all), and to trust my own gut to lead me to that sweet spot somewhere between wheatgrass and whiskey.
bottoms up to balance,
Mary

PINEAPPLE SORBET
I know i shouldn't complain but it's been really hot in Los Angeles the last few days! It makes me so ready for the Summer. The sun stays out much longer, it's perfectly acceptable to wear flip-flops all day and people don't judge you if you eat FroYo for dinner.

I get a mean sweet tooth at times (as I mentioned here and here haha) and frequent trips to the FroYo shop can add up quickly (both in calories and the bank account). So I decided to take a shot at creating a frosty treat using one of my favorite flavors: PINEAPPLE. It's not Summer yet, but it sure feels like it!
Makes about 2 pints
- 1 ripe Pineapple (about 4 cups diced)
- 1-4 tbsp sugar (if your pineapple is really ripe, you can omit)
- 1/2 cup coconut water
- 1/2 vanilla coconut milk (optional - replace with more coconut water if you omit)
- Juice from 1 lemon
- Cut and cube your pineapple (save the outside of the pineapple for a fun serving idea!)
- Add all ingredients into blender and blend until creamy (about 3 minutes should do it)
- Pour into a glass dish and place into the freezer for 1-2 hours. At this point, you can use a ice cream machine to complete the process or add it back into the blender and blend again. Then place into the container you'll be storing it in and freeze an additional 5 hours.

California Winters.... the time when it's perfectly acceptable to wear a LBD (Little Black Dress) and sunglasses in the middle of February. I laugh at this because as I headed out for the day, I decided to pair my LBD with my favorite Helmut Lang jacket and a scarf - which I had to eventually take off because I was roasting in the sun!
But it got me thinking about how versatile the little black dress is. Dress it up, dress it down - the possibilities are endless! How do you wear your LBT? Show us by using #estcalifornia on your social channels!

The plaid shirt is a San Francisco staple. Everyone - from the “Hipsters in the Haight” to the “Marina Bros” - owns one of these versatile pieces. It's perfect for traveling with and layering during our winters here in SF. My red and blue plaid shirt is one of my favorite pieces to travel with, due to its versatility. I headed home to my mom’s house in Los Altos for the weekend and packed my trusted plaid shirt to wear three different ways and save some room in my suitcase.
From keeping it simple, buttoning up and tucking it into some jeans with ankle boots - to the equestrian inspired knee high boots and blazer - the possibilities are endless. While “equestrian” is one of my favorite fashion inspirations, I just can’t get enough of layering this plaid shirt with my Home-T. I love being a California girl and representing that I was born and raised here. Pairing my California Tee with cuffed jeans, a floppy beanie and nude ankle booties is a go-to outfit for me. It's perfect for a brunch with family or just grabbing a couple beers with friends.

On the rise tastemaker, Ryan White has swiftly made a lasting statement in the world of interiors. With just a couple of interior design years under his belt, Ryan continues to wow with his sophisticated interiors and career success. An already noteworthy designer amongst publication giants such as Elle Décor, House Beautiful, and Traditional Home, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet such a talent in person. Coffee at Alfred in West Hollywood posed to be the perfect place to get an intimate account of how it feels to be designer, Ryan White.
What started as a departure from New York and a successful career in fashion as a Ford Model, Ryan relocated to Los Angeles to move in with his partner and pursue a career in acting. After a few months of living in LA and temporarily landing in a West Hollywood zip code, Ryan did not anticipate that in designing their “in-between” residence, he would not only unveil his natural talent, but true passion for interiors and design. “I knew midway through my home project, this was something I was meant to do,” Ryan says. The good thing was that, “I have close designer friends back in New York, so this world did not feel foreign.”
After completing the residence, confirmation soon came that he was on the right path. While entertaining friends at home, a couple fell in love with his design work. Work Ryan describes as “cultivated.” An aesthetic that is not existent of a specific time or place. Rather, “a well traveled space” that marries texture to new, vintage and one of a kind elements resulting in a clean, luxe and comfortable space. With this couple’s recently purchased exclusive beach home in Malibu, and desire for their space to have similar reflection, Ryan landed his first major design project and what he considers his first career break. “I was given full creative control and it was my first big project…I completely immersed myself in it,” he explains.
Continuing this past year with the same mentality of “total immersion” in his work, Ryan has become a highly sought designer. Recognized for his “keen sense of style and fashion sensibility,” he attributes this to his years spent in fashion, travels around the world and style icons James Dean and Cary Grant.
Now, not only a successful designer, but owner of his own firm, Ryan is feeling “Grateful. But overwhelmed,” in the most recent mentions of his name said amongst the likes of Nate Berkus and Kelly Wearstler as the next young emerging talent of this industry. At only 30 years old, he is prepared to keep working hard at evolving his brand. With a recent reality design pilot shot for TV, he is feeling confident this will be a phase where he can share all of his creative talents. The only difference is he says, “my thirties are for finding balance.”

We're starting something new here over on Established California! We're big fans of style and fashion and you often see us talking about brands we adore. Well, we're more than just talk! Most of the brands we showcase are brands that we love and own ourselves - like this Gull + Marie jacket that we spotlighted a few weeks back!
Now, we are insanely lucky to have sunny winters in California. I'm often reminded of this funny image that circulated the internet last year during the Polar Vortex that I still chuckle about because it's so true. And although we have 6 more weeks of winter (Thanks to Punxsutawney Phil yesterday) - I spent last weekend, enjoying the 70 degree weather, in a cute long Maxi Dress, sandals and my denim Gull + Marie jacket.
I decided to pair this dress with my trusty brown sandals, a bright thin headband and a gold sequin clutch. This was because I wanted to tie into the beautiful aztec fabric on the jacket. My jewelry was a simple necklace and fun statement bracelet (courtesy of Le Tote.com - which, if you've never heard of them before.. you're welcome.. it's like Netflix for clothes!)

PROTEIN ENERGY BALLS
I have a sweet tooth. A mighty one at that. I usually can keep it in check, but it tends to rear it's ugly head at night, right after I've had my dinner.. or in the afternoon.. around 3pm... or first thing when I wake up.. okay, okay.. fine! It's an all-day thing. The battle is real, ya'll.

Well, would you believe me that those delicious looking cookie dough and chocolate bites you see above are vegan, paleo and packed with protein and fiber?! Well, they are! And, the best part yet, they are so simple to make (no baking required!).
My favorite thing about these delicious balls of yum is that the flavor possibilities are endless! Lemon, Nut Butters, Pumpkin Spice, Coconut... and trust, there are plenty of recipes out there to give you inspiration! I made three different versions of these balls tonight and I found myself wondering if anyone else makes these as often as I do? What are your favorite flavors? I'd love to hear about them. We are going crazy over these locally handmade purses and accessories from Rais Case! We love that each item is handmade and constructed with genuine Pendleton wool and leather - and with a variety of designs and styles, there's something for just about everyone.
Back in 2010, Julie Rais Ellis was on a search for the perfect laptop case. After being disappointed by what was on the market, she decided to come home and create one herself - not knowing what would happen after would change her life. A few failed sewing attempts, Julie decided to outsource to a local seamstress to collaborate on her design. She ended up purchasing ten cases, keeping one for herself and selling the other nine. It was then that Rais Case was born.
We were able to sit down with Julie to chat more about her California life and see below what she had to share:
Where did the name Rais Case come from?
Rais is my maiden name, and when I started off making laptop cases and thought it would be clever to call the bags Rais Cases.
What inspired you to start Rais Case?
I was an art teacher when I started this journey. I kept feeling a pull towards doing my own thing. After a disappointing trip to the Mac store to buy a laptop case, I came home from work and was inspired to sew one for myself. The case turned out pretty bad, but I really loved making it. The next day I was inspired to make another one and realized that the process of designing and making a practical product was exactly what I was searching for.
What’s your favorite thing about living in California?
I love that is so easy to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. I lived in Ohio for 22 years, we had long gray winters, which were pretty in it’s own sort of way, but it forced me to be inside nearly all winter.
Where do you source your fabrics you find?
We use a lot of Pendleton® wools, which are made in Oregon. I love this wool because it’s very well made and ages beautifully. I tend to pair it with leather, mostly black and tan leathers. Sometimes I come across other leathers that I can’t pass up, I’ll buy them and make special bags like the Camo Leather bag or Chaser Tote with the black and gold hide.
Favorite Breakfast spot?
It’s not necessarily my favorite spot, but I’ll admit I find myself at Starbucks too often grabbing an iced coffee and spinach feta wrap.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give your 16 year old self?
Anything is possible. (Seriously!)
What’s in your purse?
Once I realized I never reapply makeup throughout the day, I stopped carrying it. But, I always have my phone, wallet, keys, a Paper Mate Flair pen, diapers and wipes, and a notebook with my ideas and to-do list.
Quick lifestyle tip?
Have a selection of hats on hand! For those days when you don’t have anytime to do your hair.
What inspired you?
I get my inspiration from daily life, I like make things that I need or that I feel can be designed better.
I never leave home without…
A bag!
When you aren’t working, where can you most likely be found?
At home with Kaia or on a walk with our two dogs.
Which bag is your favorite?
The Vida bag is my favorite. I love the size of it and always have one with me.
How would you define a “Golden State of Mind”?
Fun, warm, light hearted, and a place where people are doing fresh and innovative things.

GET SWEATY: Get the most out of your Hike.
Do you have a hike planned soon? Why not turn your hike into an outdoor bootcamp?! Here are some of our favorite ways to get a little more out of your hike.
Photography by Shannon Bailey | Lil Bird Photography
Do you have a hike planned soon? Why not turn your hike into an outdoor bootcamp?! Here are some of our favorite ways to get a little more out of your hike:
- Plyometrics. Adding up and down movement to a hike adds a new level of intensity. Just include short intervals of skipping and hopping, which helps engage muscle groups that may not be used otherwise. To really step things up, you can add short bursts of trail running.
- Use trees and boulders! It's amazing how easy it is to turn nature into gym equipment. You can do incline push-ups off of trees or use boulders for triceps dips.
- Why walk when you can lunge? You can really challenge yourself when hiking up an incline by doing a set of walking lunges. Work your arms by using rocks as dumbbells to add bicep curls or lateral raises.
Here's our favorite hiking workout!
- Walk 15 minutes, building to a moderate pace.
- Do 30 High-Knee Steps forward (alternating legs); skip for 30 seconds, then walk at a moderate pace for one minute.
- Do 15 Traveling Lateral Squats (turn and move sideways as you squat) in slow motion, followed by five Squat Jumps (squat slightly, then swing arms up as you jump). Knee problems? Rise up on your toes instead of jumping.
- Walk at a moderate pace for 10 minutes.
- Repeat step 2.
- Walk for five minutes at a moderate pace, then five minutes at a slow pace to cool down.

If hearing about Often Wander has you as intrigued as I was, you'll enjoy learning more about free spirit Sarah Larson as she challenges you to often wander, wander often.
What was the defining moment you knew you wanted to create Often Wander?
I was traveling in Europe (mostly wandering Barcelona) and I was so inspired by absolutely everything. I was there to dance, but felt pulled in other creative directions, to create with my hands. I knew that when I returned to the states I wanted to explore making these new ideas that came to me while traveling.
What keeps you inspired?
{WANDERING} It's true. Honestly I'm inspired by things all the time but I definitely get the most inspiration when I venture to a new place. I’m really inspired by spaces as well, like big empty run down buildings are my absolute favorite. I also love to be sneaky and find these places, and maybe go where you're not supposed to be.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Don't doubt yourself. Do you, not everyone else. Be confident and explore your interests. Stick up for yourself. Be bold and brave. Say yes to new opportunities. Work hard for your dreams.
What do you love most about California?
It seems like anything is possible in CA. We have the best of everything. This place is incredible. I've lived here for 10 years now, and I still pinch myself that I live here. I love the people in CA too. We're all chasing our dreams together and it's really inspiring and I'm happy to run along side them.
What is your favorite part of the day?
Definitely dusk. The air changes, the moods shift, and it's usually when I get my second wind. I also love right before the sun rises. I'm not usually up early enough to enjoy these moments but when I do, it feels like time is stopped and the most beautiful light shines on the city and makes me buzz with inspiration.
Favorite product in the store?
Well, I love my candles, a lot. I'm also currently digging the new diffusers I've been making. I'm hooked. I also love all the beaded bracelets/wrapped bracelets/bangles in the shop. I love a good stack, so it's fun to play around with them!

EST. SPOTLIGHT: WATER MARGIN STUDIOS + GIVEAWAY!
Water Margin Studios, spawned by a sister-brother duo inspired after a trip abroad as well as the wish to get back to their craftsman roots. Mei-ling and Jonathan Hubbard, desired to make something more than simply utilitarian; something highly functional, ergonomic, well made, exceptionally beautiful, and local.
My twenties are coming to an end and my birthday is swiftly approaching. I can see my 30s coming towards me not like a freight train about to barrel me over, but like the carousel that is already in full rotation and I got to find a way to jump on quick or I’ll be left standing waiting for my next opportunity feeling like the kid that gets picked last, except its my own damn fault. In a life that is not how I pictured it, this is scary, but I have one consolation-- finally, I can unashamedly say out loud that I like exquisite foreign knives, fancy tumblers, expensive bowls, and beautiful hand crafted cutting boards.
Cue Water Margin Studios, spawned by a sister-brother duo inspired after a trip abroad as well as the wish to get back to their craftsman roots. Mei-ling and Jonathan Hubbard, desired to make something more than simply utilitarian; something highly functional, ergonomic, well made, exceptionally beautiful, and local. This led them to what other than kitchenware! Cutting boards and spurtles to be exact.
Spurtle: a flat wooden, spatula-like utensil. See below.
Water Margin Studios is located in the Los Angeles hills and one can often hear ACDC coming from the studio as Mei-ling and Jonathan design, carve, sand, and perfect their goods. The cutting boards are made in limited batches cut from the same plank of wood, each piece is unique with contrasting hardwood inlay placed to complement each boards grain. Then the finishing process begins, starting off with some sanding. “Are you hitting that with a 400?” Jonathan asks. “I’m gettin’ it with 500” Mei-ling reports. Over a period of 3 days the pieces undergo a multi-stage washing, oiling, and sanding process. Attention to detail extends to the packaging. In keeping with Japanese aesthetics, Water Margin Studios wrap each piece in their hand-dyed shibori fabric.
Okay so what is this stuff really like? GLORIOUS. I asked to hold the brownie ax. At first touch I exclaimed, “Oh my god… this feels… great.” Soft, easy to grasp, beautiful to all the senses. I felt whole-heartedly home.
And if you are as in love with these pieces as I am, keep your eye on Water Margin Studios. The siblings hope to further combine their skillsets to create slab furniture within the year.

THE TREND: COZY CASHMERE LAYERS
When it comes to winter, it’s all about the layers. Wearing cozy knits, long sweaters, and cashmere scarves while sipping on home made cocoa or a hazelnut latte conjures up the perfect vision of winter, doesn’t it?
Photography by Ashley Williams
When it comes to winter, it’s all about the layers. Wearing cozy knits, long sweaters, and cashmere scarves while sipping on home made cocoa or a hazelnut latte conjures up the perfect vision of winter, doesn’t it? With the dropping temperatures and small arctic chill in some parts of the country, we are quite fortunate to have very mild winter temperatures here in Southern California, aren’t we?
Well, let me say that I've been loving the winter wardrobe lately. I've been pulling out my wool socks to pair with boots and all my cozy cashmere and cotton sweaters to stay warm. It's certainly a welcome reprieve from the warmer temps we've felt so far this year. I, for one, am certainly happy to see the soft, muted colors that awaited me in my winter closet. Whichever part of the country or California you’re in, I’m sure we can all agree that layered style is where it’s at this winter. Let’s pull out our knits, our cozy cape sweaters, and layer up, shall we?
Wondering what to layer? Think cozy to start. It's all about the leggings, skinny denim, even corduroy pants. Winter is the perfect time to build with cozy, heavier layers. From there, layer on top too. Think button downs, paired with a cashmere pullover, or a long, loose knit tunic over a popover top. Then add a cozy patterned scarf to bring the outfit together. A good style rule? If you're structured on the bottom, then loose and flowy works on the top. A perfect cozy, winter style combination.

CHRISTMAS CRAFT CHAOS
Each year for the last seven years there has been one of my favorite holiday parties in my calendar. There is something about getting together with your best gals and crafting away to bring some holiday cheer. Check out this year's Mother, daughter, sister, aunt, girlfriend Christmas Craft Party!
Each year for the last seven years there has been one of my favorite holiday parties in my calendar. I've flown and driven hundreds of miles to be there for it and it's one of my favorite memories to make each year. This year marked a milestone as the third generation of crafters joined for my mom Ana's Mother, daughter, sister, aunt, girlfriend Christmas Craft Party! It's a mouthful, I know. And each year the turn out gets bigger and bigger, this year we had over 35!
It's always been the little party that could. Defying the odds when in the 11th hour the cleaning and craft preparation is being finished (Shout out to Terri, Germaine, Karen, Aunt Susan, Kim, you know who you are you little elves)! But some how the party ALWAYS happens and some years it's nothing short of a Christmas miracle! One year it fought against a power outage from a storm in Northern California and in my mom's true fashion, a generator was plugged in since the party must go on!
Each year brings new faces and new craft stations. Each station is a different holiday project from calendars to body scrubs, ornament making to cupcakes to go. But each year two stations remain, the gift tag station and my station..... the mimosa station! And one rule stays, no boys allowed! Guests bring their favorite treat to share and of course there's a good old gift exchange. We've done exchanges for holiday aprons and holiday towels. And let me tell you, some years the battle gets pretty intense.
I share this with you because a little idea my mom had years ago has now turned into one of the best times around the holidays. And I encourage you to throw one yourself! Yes, it's a huge undertaking, but there is something about getting together with your best gals and crafting away to bring some holiday cheer. Check out some of the fun we had this year and consider throwing one of these next year. It's never too late to build your own tradition with the best girls in your life!
Happy Holidays!

Last week on the we talked about the main components of a party and gave you a peek at how we included those ideas in our holiday party! This week, we wanted to give you some party accessory ideas, including some of our favorite DIY's.

They'll be guiding us through holiday planning and sharing lifestyle tips... be prepared to be inspired!
Last week on the we talked about the main components of a party and gave you a peek at how we included those ideas in our holiday party! This week, we wanted to give you some party accessory ideas, including some of our favorite DIY's.
DETAILS
The tablescape is typically the focal event of a party - the centerpieces will be your main decor, your guests will be wining and dining at the table and conversation will flow. So this is where the details will matter most! For our party, we put a personalized namecard at each setting, and added a fun braided detail. The braids were easy to DIY ourselves with strips of fabric, and really tied the place settings together. You can pick up materials for this at your local craft store. Don't be afraid to get creative! Fabric, string or twine are great options.
FAVORS
The other key to a great party is a memorable favor for your guest to take home. It's their final impression of the night, and we want it to be a good one! For our event, we made a favor that doubled as event decor - ornament cookies. The cookies hung from a tree during the party bringing in some holiday cheer. At the end of the night, the guests received a goodie bag and got to pick a cookie from the tree to take home. This is a simple DIY that just requires cookie dough, cookie cutters and frosting. When making the cookies be sure to leave a hole at the top for the string to hang from the tree. From there, the design is up to you! Choose frosting and edible accents in the color scheme and theme of your event.
ENTERTAIN
Lastly, be sure your guests have a little entertainment! It can be a group activity like cookie decorating station, a photo booth or event offer plain wreaths to decorate. For our event we set up a scent station where guests were able to make their own perfumes or body scrubs to take home. We included fun holiday scents like pine, peppermint and nutmeg!
Party accessories are the elements tie your party together and add a little pizzazz! The details will be what makes your night memorable. So whether you're DIY'ing or not, be sure to add personalized and cute accents that your guests will be talking about all night. We hope our Christmas party décor and DIY brought some inspiration to your upcoming parties!

Maintain Your Sane (through the Holidays)
The Holidays. Sure, they're filled with comfort and joy but there is a ton of pressure for the holidays to be perfect. For the gifts to be perfect.. the food to be perfect.. for you to attend every party you're invited to - and to shine at each party! It can be a lot to deal with. Here are a few tips that will help you flow through this holiday season with ease.

Oh the holidays! Naughty & Nice.
Sure, they're filled with comfort and joy.. but they can also be speckled with stress and sadness too. There's a ton of pressure for the holidays to be perfect. Jolly, even! For the gifts to be perfect.. the food to be perfect.. for you to attend every party you're invited to - and to shine at each party! It can be a lot to deal with. Here are a few tips that will hopefully help you flow through this holiday season with ease.
Decide what is important to you. YOU. Not what's important to your mom, dad, partner, bestie, brother, sister, grandparents. What do you enjoy about the holidays? Take a minute to really think about it. Then honor that. Direct your energy towards what you most enjoy about the holidays. Even if that means saying no to a party or two. The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, so why spend it doing things you don't really want to be doing?
Accept what you're feeling. It's so easy to get caught up in the "'Tis the season I'm supposed to be happy" shenanigans. If you're not feeling it, acknowledge what it is that you are feeling. Being sad around the holidays is actually pretty normal. Maybe you're missing a loved one, maybe this year isn't as cheerful as the last, maybe you're disappointed in a family member or friend. Whatever you're feeling is fine. You are human. Move with that instead of against it.
Forget perfection. It doesn't exist. The holidays tend to bring about the delusion of perfection. Finding the perfect gift, throwing the perfect party/being the perfect party guest, having a perfect dinner, family, tree, etc. In reality, the gifts may not be perfect, the party might be lame, dinner may be late, your cousin might still be a jerk, and your tree might be crooked. Who cares! You have no control over these circumstances, so there's no use in letting them ruin your holiday vibes. If your heart is in the right place, the gifts, dinners and parties will come across as genuine and, in turn, will be genuinely appreciated, imperfections aside.
All that being said, stress can still sneak its greedy little fingers into our world, especially this time of year. When and if that happens, here are a few tricks to help keep it at bay.
- Breathe. As cliche as that sounds, do it. Stop wherever you are when you feel the holiday tension build and take 5 Long, slow, nourishing breaths. Maybe even close your eyes. From your toes all the way to your head, let the breath wash through you. Be interested in it. Just for 5 cycles. You're going to be breathing anyway, why not pay attention to it for a few cycles? You'll feel better after for sure.
- Squeeze. There's an acupressure point called the Hoku Point that can relieve tension and headaches as well as muscle or joint pain in the body. You can do this anywhere- the grocery store line, in traffic, at a party. To locate it, take the thumb and index finger of one hand and squeeze the muscle in between your thumb and index finger on the opposite hand for a few seconds to relive some holiday tension.
- Flow. Stick with your normal fitness routine as much as you possibly can. Try to keep up with your gym sessions, yoga practice, running, or spinning habits as much as possible. If you don't have time for your full routine, go for a short walk or hike. Do something active even if you don't feel like it. Sometimes a simple, quiet walk does wonders for the body and for the soul. Take a few minutes every day to clear your head and to reconnect to what YOU love about the holidays.
May this be your brightest and least stressful holiday season yet! Cheers to you and yours!
ho ho ho,
Mary
