MEET MINNO: CORGI, BEST FRIEND AND BALCONY NAPPER
Our pets are our family. They have distinct personalities and quirks. It’s like you know exactly what they are saying to you when they look up at you, from the end of the couch, after an afternoon nap , right? Well, guest editor, Becca Kufrin is giving us a glimpse into the new Los Angeles life of her Corgi, Minno, this week - sploot photos and all.

Everyday my mom likes to try and wake me up around 7 am. Since I’m still a growing girl who needs her beauty rest, that’s WAY too early. So she usually lets me lounge in the bed all to myself till about 7:30, because by then it’s time for my morning walk and bathroom break. We usually go about a mile, all the while I’m on the lookout for the squirrels.
Squirrel hunting is my favorite form of exercise. After a few potty sessions, stopping to smell every nook and cranny along the way, we venture home for my gourmet breakfast. I love to eat but I’m getting a little sick of my mom feeding me the same old stuff day after day. Usually by this point it’s time for my first nap out in the sun on the balcony. Or sometimes I fall asleep while staring at the neighbors on the back of the couch, I’m not picky.
Later in the afternoon (if I’m a good girl) I usually get a spot of peanut butter before heading off to the dog park to see my friends. Now I LOVE the dog park and I love making friends. My best friend is a Aussie named Leo. He usually chases me for a bit, but since he’s getting kind of chunky during quarantine he doesn’t like to run as much as I do. But that’s okay because there are a lot of other dogs around that I like to rile up. I feel like I take after my mom in the sense that I like to be chased. I heard she was a Bachelorette back in the day and a lot of guys chased her - but she doesn’t seem cool enough for that, so it could just be made up.
I hate the moments that come after the dog park because that usually means a bath. I’m not the biggest fan of water so I typically try to make an escape, but it never quite works out - my short little legs don’t get me too far.
After that I have another sun-basking balcony nap before dinner. After dinner my mom tries to get me to burn off the calories I just packed on, so we take another long stroll through the neighborhood where we look at all the cute houses I hope to one day live in. A girl can dream, right? Speaking of dreams, now it's usually time for bed.
WHAT IS A “SPLOOT”?
A sploot is a type of stretch that some pets do. Although it's typically associated with corgis, many types of dogs and cats can sploot too. This special stretch is defined as a pet laying on their belly while stretching their legs out behind them. When you see a pet splooting, it's a pretty funny sight — almost like they're ready to take flight à la Superman! Although a traditional sploot requires that both legs stick straight out, there are a couple of variations: A) the "half-sploot" is when only one leg is sticking out, and B) the "side sploot" is when the pet's legs don't stretch straight out, but lean to one side.

MY FAVORITE THINGS… WITH BECCA
I’m the go-to girl for a good charcuterie board at any party or picnic, and if there was an Olympics competition for snack preparation and eating, then I’d take the gold medal. This week I’m sharing some of my favorite things, and what you’ll find if you looked in my pantry.
GETTING TO KNOW ME - AND MY FRIDGE.
Contributed by Guest Editor, Becca Kufrin
As I’ve expressed in my previous blog posts, I’m a foodie, especially when it comes to snacks. I’m not great at much, but I am pretty darn good at picking out and packing the right snacks for any sort of occasion. I’m the go-to girl for a good charcuterie board at any party or picnic, and if there was an Olympics competition for snack preparation and eating, then I’d take the gold medal. I constantly am stocking my fridge and cupboards full of them, and always enjoy a trip to Trader Joe’s to find the latest and greatest. Sometimes I tend to go overboard, but hey, life is short - so treat yoself!
Currently my cupboard is burting with the following:
5 different flavors of Skinny Dipped Almonds
Everything-flavored cashews
Pumpkin Spice cookies
Fig bars
Peanuts
HU chocolate bars
3 different kinds of peanut butter
Haribo gummy bears
Perfect Snack bars
Pita bread + hummus
Bitchin sauce
Trader Hint of Lime Chips + salsa
Crackers
3 flavors of Hippeas
Trader Joe’s gluten free pretzels (so extra crunchy!)
Popcorn
Biscoff cookies
Cheetos (chilled in the freezer)
Cheese - I am a firm believer that a fridge should be stalked with at least 3 different types for any given situation
I’m also probably missing some items here, but you get the jist. I like snacks.
Here’s one of my favorite and quick, go-to snacks (more like an appetizer) that I like to bring to parties. Meditteranean Hummus Plate:
A FEW OF MY OTHER FAVORITE THINGS…
Guilty pleasure:
Hallmark movies and spoonfuls of peanut butter
Treat Yo Self:
Spa day, anything that includes a massage + facial
Outfit:
Sweatshirt + leggings + slippers
Girl's Night:
Wine and charcuterie at a tapas bar followed by dinner + cocktails on a fun rooftop. Or basically anything that includes champagne
Go-to snack:
Hippeas or everything-seasoned cashews
Vacation Spot:
Italy, or if local then Santa Barbara
Restaurant:
Elephante in Santa Monica
Coffee:
Iced with a shot of vanilla + oat milk
Ice Cream:
Halo Top - any and all flavors
I never leave home without…
chapstick, hand wipes and Minno
In my purse:
I like to come prepared so I have mints, chapstick, hand sanitizer, an extra face mask, wallet, dog treats, collapsable dog bowl, matches, deck of cards, and wine bottle opener
A perfect Saturday:
A morning walk with Minno, stroll through the local farmer’s market for veggies and snacks, lounging by the pool for an hour or two, and dinner + drinks at a great local spot. Or since it’s fall - visiting a pumpkin patch or apple orchard

A DAY IN THE LIFE... WITH BECCA
This month’s Guest Editor, Becca Kufrin, is giving us a glimpse into a typical day in her new LA life. From morning cuddles with her Corgi, Minno - to sunset cocktails with her besties.
A SNEAK PEAK INTO MY DAILY LIFE IN LOS ANGELES, CA
Contributed by Guest Editor, Becca Kufrin
Well, I have to begin this by acknowledging that quarantine has really cramped my style, especially during a recent move. For someone who is a HUGE foodie and loves to discover new and amazing restaurants, food trucks, cocktail lounges, wine bars, tapas joints, etc. I feel like the true cuisine connoisseur in me hasn’t begun to truly live & thrive in LA. But here’s to hoping for that one day soon. Regardless of this pandemic, I’ve still been able to venture to some amazing outdoor spots and begin to sample all that the city has to offer - it’s like a very long appetizer hour before the main course.
7 am :: wake up and snuggle with my corgi, Minno, for a while. Check any missed texts from the night before then hop out of bed. I always apply some sunscreen and throw on my favorite favorite pair of leggings before dragging Minno out of bed (she really likes to lounge in the morning so sometimes this takes a lot longer than you’d think).
7:45am :: Make a small starter pot of coffee while reading The Skimm and New York Times Newsletters on my balcony.
8:30am :: Get Minno ready then head out the door for our daily a.m. walk. We typically go for a mile or two throughout the cute neighborhood, where I daydream about what it must be like to live in one of the many quaint, charming houses around the block. We make a quick stop at Priscilla's for a large, blueberry vanilla iced coffee and maple nut scone before venturing back home (never venturing the same way we came).
9am :: I like to get a quick workout in before truly starting my work day, so I pop open an IG class or two from @jessicaknutson or head to my parking lot for a virtual session with my trainer @creel_fitness
9:45 am :: make a quick breakfast (fried egg on avo toast), hop in the shower and get ready
10:45am :: catch up on emails, work on building out my calendar for the week, check-off the daily action items, and then set-up/film social content for any brand partnerships that I have scheduled for the week
1:30pm :: take Minno for a quick walk and grab some lunch from either Lemonade (I always opt for the veggie plate of broccoli, curried cauliflower and honey Brussel sprouts) or Tocaya Organica for the Fajita Del Ray Bowl with chicken tinga, and of course, chips & guac on the side.
2:30pm :: Put together a list of groceries so I can try out some fun recipes and make a quick pit stop at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods
3:15pm :: Get back to emails and calls, work on any personal business ventures (more to come about this very soon!) and wind down my work day
4:30pm :: Grab a snack and good book or magazines and sit by my pool for the final few moments of sunshine
5:30pm :: Take Minno on another long walk or to the dog park
6:30pm :: Turn on my favorite true crime podcast and go for an evening run, all while thinking about what I’ll crush for dinner. Shower & get ready for the night
7:30pm :: Meet up with girlfriends for dinner & drinks. If we are going out for sushi we typically aim for Teru in Studio City - the lemon roll and kanpachi carpaccio are to die for! Or if we want to venture out of the valley for a relaxed, coastal vibe, Elephanté is our go-to for some whipped eggplant puccia and soppressata pizza, which is heaven on the tongue.
9:30pm :: Sometimes if it’s not a school night ;) we’ll head to someone’s backyard for an outdoor movie night (90s throwbacks are our go-to) and some nightcaps, usually a bottle of bubbly because we like to pretend we’re fancy.

MEET BECCA KUFRIN: Host, Entrepreneur and LA's Newest City Girl
Former “Bachelorette” Becca Kufrin is hanging with us all month long as she shares what life has been like for her since COVID hit and why she decided to move West to become an official Angeleno. You can say she’s on a new journey for love.. the California kind.
MEET BECCA, OUR GUEST EDITOR THIS MONTH!
Former “Bachelorette” Becca Kufrin is hanging with us all month long as she shares what life has been like for her since COVID hit and why she decided to move West to become an official Angeleno. You can say she’s on a new journey for love.. the California kind.
LETTER TO THE READERS:
Hey, all you Est. California Readers!
I’m Becca, but you probably know me best as the Bachelorette (very very former, washed-up Bachelorette, I might add). I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m writing on this site in the first place, considering I’m a mid-west native who spent 28 years in good old, and cold, Minnesota. Well, after wrapping the show 2+ years ago, I decided to make the big move West and call California “my home”.
During that time I fell in love, moved in with my partner near San Diego, got a dog, started a loungewear line, co-hosted a touring theater show across the country, also co-hosted a Bachelor-related podcast, traveled the world, and was constantly on the go, go, go until BAM! COVID hit and shut down the world… thus also shutting down much of the way I was making an income. It forced me to take some time to chill and really reflect on all of my life changes over the past couple years and how truly upside down my life had become.
Since my time in quarantine (Q-time as I like to call it), I ended the above said relationship, stopped touring in the theaters, was forced to podcast from home, and do everything else, basically from the confines of my small apartment. Just when my life started to feel like it was on the verge of falling apart, I went back to Minnesota to take some “me” time, but couldn’t figure out what that really looked like. I dabbled in the idea of settling back down there, maybe buy a home with some land and really put down roots in the midwest, but that didn’t feel right. I’ve always loved California and if you ask me I’ll swear on the Bible that I was originally born in the wrong state, so I knew in my bones that I had to get back out to the west coast.
When I started filming on The Bachelor back in 2017, LA always called to me. Maybe chalk it up to the vibrancy that the city has to offer, the fact that you can drive within an hour or two and be near the ocean, mountains, or vineyards, or that something unique is always happening in any one of the diverse neighborhoods. LA just felt like “me.” So, during a very last-minute FaceTime session with my producer-turned-friend, we threw around the idea of me moving out there alone without any furniture, and within 24 hours I had signed a lease and became an official Angeleno. Only three weeks in and it’s the best sporadic decision I think I’ve ever made.
So here I am, pouring out my heart to you all and truly experiencing all that this city has to offer through virgin eyes. So who’s along for the ride with me?
LET’S GET TO KNOW BECCA..
What song(s) is a “must” for a road trip playlist? Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac and Atlantic City by The Band
If I had a superpower, it would be… to teleport to places
Favorite thing about California? The warmth and sunshine - basically the fact that you can be outdoors at almost anytime of the year and find any sort of activity imaginable
Best thing you ever ate and where? Lomo Saltado in Peru or homemade soups (every kind!) in Paris
What’s the most memorable moment you had while traveling? Oh man, this is hard to narrow down, but one of the most fun and meaningful memories made was when I was filming in the Maldives for the Bachelorette. It was the final week of my season and I was down to my two, remaining men that I was falling in love with. The anxiety and pressure that I felt during that time was astronomical because I knew some major, life-altering decisions were about to be made, but we had one semi-chill day before the last dates began. I was with my team of producers and the camera & audio crew (who I formed some really special friendships with) and we were filming some b-roll shots throughout the afternoon. We wrapped early, and instead of parting ways to go to our individual cabanas, we all decided to pop some champagne, play some good music, order room service and jump into the pool in our clothes (the same pool that apparently the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge had shared - NBD!) As we all watched one of the most breathtaking sunsets over the Indian Ocean, it was a moment that I knew I had to savor and would never forget. Moments like that with the crew isn’t typically “allowed” as we don’t get to spend much time outside of working hours together, but after a long season of filming, many tears shed over breakups, and emotions constantly being shared in a dark, confined room, it was a time that we all recognized how much we cared and valued one another on this crazy, shared experience. Shout out to Sam, Caitlin, Ally, Martin, Christina and Dave-O for making it one helluva ride!
What’s next for you? Besides dabbling in a random array of business endeavors like co-hosting the Bachelor Happy Hour Podcast and Bachelor Live on Stage, and working on a loungewear line called B the Label, I’m also in the initial stages of launching something real special soon! More to come on that so follow me on social (see below ;)

A LIFESTYLE “DIY” PROJECT FOR ANYONE
Contributed by previous Guest Editors, Kayla and Amber of The Dulcet Creative
Hey Established California readers!!
Today we thought it would be fun to share some content from our blog. We love to blog about some of our own personal creative outlets like crafting, cooking and travel. Here is one of our most recent summery DIYs we think you may enjoy!!
There is something so fun and addicting about pulling your paints out and getting a little messy! This week we are sharing with you how to make your own hand painted dish towels. This was such a simple little project but a great way to dress up an ordinary item in your kitchen.
What you will need:
Plain white dishtowels
Fabric paint
Paint brush
Lemons or limes
What to do:
Cut lemon or lime in half and allow to sit out for about an hour to dry out.
Lay your dishtowel out on a flat surface.
Dab the fruit with fabric paint. Cover the entire surface lightly then go back and add extra paint to the areas you would like to highlight like the rim and the triangular ridges.
Practice a few times on a piece of paper to make sure the pattern looks right.
Press fruit stamp onto your dishtowel.
Hang to dry!
Wash the towels before using and enjoy this bright new summer-filled accent to your kitchen!

Planning a California Coast road trip? If you’re not, you should be. From the sunbathed shores of San Diego to to the thick groves of NorCal’s redwoods, California is arguably one of the most beautiful and diverse states in the contiguous United States.
I’ll be sharing my favorite spots all month, so stay tuned to read up on what gives “The Golden State” its signature sparkle!
Let’s Explore: CENTRAL COAST

OJAI
Jet inland about 20 minutes from Ventura for a stop in Ojai. It’s a sleepy little spot known for its wellness spas, wineries, and stunning pink sunsets. The wine in Ojai Valley may not be internationally renowned, but it is certainly tasty.

Ojai Rancho Inn. Photo by Amber Knittel from @nikkthequick
Start your day with breakfast at Bonnie Lu’s to fuel up or at least Beacon Coffee for some caffeine. First stop - Majestic Oak Vineyard for a patio tasting with ambiance before hitting the classic crowd-pleasers: Topa Mountain Winery, Old Creek Ranch Winery, and End Of The Road Winery. If you haven’t already overdone it, snack on a BYOP (bring your own picnic) lunch at The Ojai Vineyard Tasting Room or try the delicious cheese and charcuterie trays at the adorable Tipple & Ramble.

Photo by Amber Knittel from @nikkthequick
Not in the mood for wine tasting (or more likely - need a sober activity?) Ojai is also known for its hikes and one of my favorite outdoor bookstores, Bart’s Books. It has patio seating for leafing through your latest find with a coffee in hand. They also allow purchasing outside of opening hours on the honor system.
Peruse the nearby shopping while you’re in town and definitely stop by Summer Camp for all the crystals, incense, and handmade goods your heart can handle.
Bart’s Books. Photo by Amber Knittel from @nikkthequick
If you didn’t pack a picnic lunch or overdo it on meat at cheese, head to The Nest, Ojai Deer Lodge or Farmer and the Cook for lunch.
Nocciola. Photo by Nikki Lazaran
That evening, head to Nocciola for your reservation. This Italian restaurant with al fresco dining is housed in an adorable converted home, making it the perfect mix of comfort and class.
That evening, overnight at The Ojai Valley Inn & Spa or Ojai Rancho Inn to go all out. If you’re on a budget, The Lavender Inn is your spot. For something a little more eclectic, stay in a renovated vintage airstream at Caravan Outpost.
SANTA BARBARA
Less than an hour north of Ojai, you’ll find Santa Barbara - one of the last spots you’ll encounter with SoCal vibes as you head north. Santa Barbara is basically what would happen if a Beach Boys song came to life - it is sleepy beach town meets active outdoorsy vibes. Start your day off right with breakfast at Scarlett Begonia or Jeannine’s, where you simply must order the banana Kahlua french toast.
Once you’ve finished chowing down on some french toast, peep the waterfront at Stearn’s Wharf. Walk the shore, cruise the pier, or rent bikes to amble down the beach path. When you’re adequately sunned and sanded, make a pitstop at the Old Mission and the Santa Barbara County Courthouse for a bit of history. The views of the city from the courthouse’s clock tower, “El Mirador,” are worth it alone.
Photo by Dustin Dillard from @nikkthequick
Lunch is comprised of delicious and cheap tacos from La Super-Rica Taqueria. Line up and prepare to have your mind blown.
Enjoy a leisurely rest of the day shopping and eating your way through Santa Barbara. Make a dinner reservation in advance to enjoy the delectable and lux stylings of San Ysidro Ranch, The Lark, or acclaimed Bouchon.
San Ysidro Ranch. Photo by Nikki Lazaran
For tonight’s accommodations, go affordable and funky at the Simpson House Inn, which boasts Victorian-era decor, or the Santa Barbara Auto Camp, in a vintage airstream, or stay mid-level at the Spanish Garden Inn. If you’re ready to splurge, Santa Barbara is the place to do it. From The Ritz-Carlton Bacara and The Canary Hotel to The Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore or The Belmond El Encanto Hotel, there’s something for every kind of high roller.
SOLVANG
If you’re craving something a little cheesy (in the best way possible) on the way north from Santa Barbara, pop into Solvang to stretch your legs. Solvang is a kitschy little Danish town, perfect for Danish sampling and Christmas decor shopping year round. It also sports photogenic windmills on every corner. Get your caffeine fix at the beautifully minimalist Good Seed Coffee and your accompanying Danish at Birkholm’s Bakery before hitting the road. A few hours here is all you need!
Photo by Dustin Dillard from @nikkthequick
LOS OLIVOS
If you fancy a cheeky glass of midday wine, you’re a mere 10 minutes from Los Olivos, one of the most deservedly famous wine regions in California. Rusack Winery is one of my favorites for sampling delicious California varietals on their shaded outdoor patio with views of the rolling hills and vineyards.

LOS ALAMOS
A hop, skip, and a jump from Los Olivos is one of the most underrated towns in California, Los Alamos. With only two main streets, you can miss the whole place in the blink of an eye, but this town has meals and thrift shopping that simply cannot be missed.
Full Of Life Flatbread has killer pizzas, PICO Restaurant serves up lux small plates, and Bob’s Well Bread turns out delicious breads, pastries, and coffees.

All of the thrift shopping you could ever want is sprinkled in amongst these amazing restaurants. The Depot Mall, The Gentleman Farmer, and Sister’s Gift and Home are the spots to hit for vintage finds.
If you have a chance to stay the night, you should. Choose between the renovated Alamo Motel, The 1880 Union (stage coach era luxury with a killer saloon), and the Skyview Los Alamos (retro 60s) for some of my favorite unique lodging in California.

PISMO BEACH
Next stop on your tour of the central coast is Pismo Beach. Pismo is perfect for a stroll on the pier, hike, bike ride, or horseback ride through the Pismo Preserve. If you have a need for speed, Pismo is also known for its dune buggy tours, sand surfing at the Oceano Dunes, and kayaking through its sea caves.

When you’re hungry after your morning activities, fill up at Sandy’s Deli, The Spoon Trade, or Splash Cafe, where the clam chowder is a must. For your caffeine fix, hit up 8575 Perfetto Caffee. Wanting something a little more lux? The Ventana Grill is the perfect spot for sunset ocean views and The Oyster Loft is the spot for oysters and cocktails.
If you’re spending the night, The Dolphin Bay or Cottage Inn By The Sea, are sure bets.
SAN LUIS OBISPO
Just about 15 min inland, you’ll find the charming town of San Luis Obispo. Your first stop is a fun photo op at SLO’s bubblegum alley - I’m on the bubble about whether this one is cute or just disgusting. Pack a piece of Double Bubble for the perfect shot.
San Luis Obispo’s “Bubblegum Alley.” Photo by Dustin Dillard from @nikkthequick
If you’d rather relax than stand next to a wall full of thousands of strangers’ discarded gum, the Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa lets you soak without the stay for around $15/hr.
Next stop - coffee and food, of course. Scout Coffee Shop is a must for caffeine and Old West Cinnamon Rolls for a hearty breakfast. If you’re looking for some comfort food of the savory variety, head to Slo Brew Co. for duck nachos and braised pork belly.
For your fill of nature, hike Madonna Mountain for unparalleled views or drive to Elephant Seal Vista Point for elephant seals and sea views sans exercise.
History buffs should not miss Hearst Castle. This National Historic Landmark was designed by Julia Morgan for newspaper mogul, William Hearst, in the early 20th century, and has housed many a coveted formal dinner or star-studded weekend.
Madonna Inn. Photo by Jeannine Lazaran from @nikkthequick
The obvious choice for your stay is SLO’s crowning jewel, The Madonna Inn, a super quirky spot with 110 unique rooms that has been open since 1958. Hop on the website to take your pick between all the fun and individually styled rooms – pink, sparkly, rock-built, and every other adjective imaginable. Enjoy a drink at the bar just to peep the floral and pink decor. Once you’re ready for drink #2, Uber to The Station, a retro, converted gas station turned event space and wine bar.
PASO ROBLES
Just a quick jaunt from San Luis Obispo is Paso Robles, a town all about the wine. In case you weren’t sure at this point, I really like wine. Explore Denner Vineyards for its stunning oak trees and lovely Zinfandels or Herman Story Wines for its full-bodied Grenache. For bold California Cabs, JUSTIN is classic and for white wine fans, Derby Estate Wines, is the spot. After all that sampling, you can find the sustenance you’re seeking at La Cosecha.

BIG SUR
Big Sur is easily one of my favorite places in the world - from the majestic redwoods to the stunning coastline and surprisingly freeing lack of service, Big Sur is a dream come true. It is a complete must to take the scenic route and drive Highway 1 on the way in. Leave ample time to stop at every single turnout, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge.
Bixby Creek Bridge. Photo by Benjamin Montemayor from @nikkthequick
Next must-see along Hwy 1 is nearby McWay Falls. The earlier in the day, the better, to avoid the crowds at the overlook. While you can’t get down onto the beach (legally), watching a waterfall splash out onto the sand and into the ocean is pretty spectacular, regardless of your vantage point.
McWay Falls. Photo by Benjamin Montemayor from @nikkthequick
Make sure to get your hands on plenty of comfort food while you’re in town - it pairs well with the perpetual layer of fog over this magical little coastal gem. Best spots to do so? Big Sur Roadhouse or Big Sur Bakery. Big Sur Bakery also doubles as a delightful coffee stop and one of the few gas stations in town, so it is an all around win. If you prefer lunch with a view, the Nepenthe Restaurant‘s front patio is the place. Fair warning - do not go there for the coffee.
Photo by Benjamin Montemayor from @nikkthequick

To work off your hearty meal, it’s a necessity to hit up one of the many incredible trails in the area. Ewoldsen Trail starts from the parking area of McWay Falls, but be sure to check the trail conditions online before attempting, as it is occasionally closed.
Julia Pfeiffer Beach. Photo by Benjamin Montemayor from @nikkthequick
As golden hour starts to set in, make your way down to Pfeiffer State Beach and stay until sunset. You pay to enter the park and to leave once the sunlight is gone, but watching it set through the keyhole in the rock formation and fizzle out over the water is absolutely stunning. It’s also the perfect spot for a picnic and some sun, weather permitting.
For dinner, consider a fancier affair at The Restaurant at Ventana Inn or Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn. If you’re on a budget, Big Sur Bakery or Big Sur Roadhouse are sure bets.
Glen Oaks Big Sur’s Big Sur Cabin. Photo by Dustin Dillard from @nikkthequick
One of my favorite things about Big Sur is undoubtedly the accommodations. Glen Oaks Big Sur, a renovated motel, is home to its own private patch of redwoods and unique cabins, such as the Big Sur Cabin, which boasts twin outdoor baths in a private, enclosed patio complete with a fire pit. For an even bigger splurge, look into the Ventana Inn and their newly renovated onsen hot baths or The Post Ranch Inn, which did an incredible job of maximizing views with their floor to ceiling glass windows.
Best budget accommodations? My favorite cozy little spot was at the Big Sur Cabins & Campgrounds, where you can elect to camp out or book a quaint and comfy cabin. They all come with fire pits - all the better for s’mores making.

CARMEL, CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA & PEBBLE BEACH
Just north of Big Sur, the landscape changes dramatically, but remains equally beautiful as you reach Carmel-By-The-Sea, Carmel, and Pebble Beach. Drive 17 mile drive, a scenic drive along the coast with tons of turnouts and viewpoints - my favorite of which is Scenic Overlook #34. You’ll pay an entry fee to make the drive, but this hauntingly beautiful stretch of coast and its stunning cypress trees are worth every penny.
Pebble Beach’s iconic 17 Mile Drive. Photo by Nikki Lazaran
If you’re a history buff, the Carmel Mission is a fun stop while you’re in town. Constructed in the late 1700s, the mission has become mostly a garden and religious museum, recounting the foundation of Catholic missions in California. On your way out, cruise by La Bicyclette for lunch. I love all of their soups and salads.

That evening, head to 1833 for a cozy dinner in cognac-colored lounge furniture with an emphasis on spirits. Make a reservation in advance. Another fan favorite is Aubergine.
Rest up at the Carmel Valley Ranch, L’Auberge Carmel or Mission Ranch, Clint Eastwood’s favorite haunt.
MONTEREY & PACIFIC GROVE
Less than an hour north of Carmel, you’ll find the charming adjacent towns of Monterey and Pacific Grove. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is the shining star of Monterey, and has been opened since the 1980s. Originally constructed to showcase its “living kelp forest,” it now houses otherworldly seal, sea lion, and jellyfish exhibits. A few minute walk from the aquarium, you can spot harbor seals and sea lions sunning themselves on the sand.

Continue north from the aquarium and you’ll land at Lovers’ Point in Pacific Grove. This gorgeous little outcropping is poppin’ in the summer and is wrapped in a chilly blanket of fog in the wintertime. If you continue on the path along the cost, you’ll arrive at a small lighthouse. If you’re looking for even more nature, head out to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve to do the 4 mile loop.

For some casual, local fare, this evening, enjoy seafood in downtown Pacific Grove at Passionfish.
My favorite accommodations in Pacific Grove are at the Victorian B&B called the Seven Gables Inn. For more modern-looking accommodations, try The Lodge At Pebble Beach or The Inn At Spanish Bay, both in Pebble Beach, or the Intercontinental The Clement in Monterey.

LET’S EXPLORE: LOS ANGELES

VENICE BEACH
If you’re cruising the California coast, you’d be remiss to skip over Venice Beach. This LA-adjacent beach brings the slower-paced Beach Boys vibes to the big city. Start your day by munching on LA favorites for breakfast or brunch, like avocado toast and grain bowls at The Butcher’s Daughter, the blue açaí bowl at Great White, or pretty much everything on the menu at Gjelina. Once you’re fed and caffeinated, make your way to the famous Venice Sign!
Pro tip: Wait for the crosswalk to allow crossing in all directions to snap the perfect photo without getting hit by public transit. Had to learn this tip the hard way…

Once you’ve snagged your sign photo without getting hit by a bus, head down to the boardwalk and take a leisurely stroll to visit Muscle Beach, the rainbow lifeguard tower, and skateboarders and bikers frequenting the beach. If you’re over the chaos of Muscle Beach, it’s time to head to the Venice Canals to take in the views and window shop for your dream vacation home.
Santa Monica Pier. Photo by Michael Palumbo from @nikkthequick
SANTA MONICA
Bike along the beach or jump in a car to head up the coast to Santa Monica. First stop is walking Third Street Mall to take in the street performers and peruse the shops. Feeling the need for a reprieve from the crowds? Head up to the top of the Hotel Shangri-La and enjoy a refreshing drink on their rooftop. If you’re looking for a sea view with all the vibes, try Elephante - make a reservation before you go to ensure you get a table.
Grab a bite while you’re there or venture to Flower Child for one of my favorite healthy alternatives. End the day with a sunset stroll down Santa Monica Pier for treats, rides, and subpar restaurants.
Downtown LA. Photo by Michael Palumbo from @nikkthequick
DOWNTOWN LA
Los Angeles is one of those rare cities where downtown seems to have less going on than the outskirts of the city, but in recent years there has been a veritable culinary resurgence. While it shouldn’t comprise the majority of your trip to LA, it is absolutely worth a stop. Kick off the day with breakfast hopping at Grand Central Market. You need coffee from G&B and an egg breakfast sandwich from Egg Slut. Go early to avoid long lines, bring a camera for pics of all the neon signs, and come hungry. Also parking is a nightmare - take a rideshare if you can.
If museums are on the docket, a pre-booked visit to The Broad art museum downtown is a must.

Once you’ve refueled, make your way to adjacent Hollywood…
HOLLYWOOD
Hollywood is known for well…the Hollywood sign, actors, and the Walk of Fame. The best way to experience the he Hollywood sign is to get out and hike! Hollyhock trail head offers a leisurely climb up the mountains with views of the sign. The Wisdom Tree trail head offers a more rigorous route to the top with equally stunning views. And if hikes aren’t your thing, drive right up to Lake Hollywood Park for views sans incline.
Hollywood Sign hike for the last sunset of the year
From there, it’s just a short drive to the Walk Of Fame to see the handprints of your favorite actor or actress. Maybe consider not touching them because, well...I’ve personally people pee on that sidewalk. If the mood strikes, catch a movie at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Post movie, take a late afternoon cruise down Mulholland for those La La Land views - you can even stop at several of the turnouts they used to film the movie! During your time in Hollywood, if you plan in advance, you can also book tickets online to The Stahl House (Case Study #22), an architectural marvel and LA icon with unreal sunset views. Start looking into these tickets more than a month in advance to secure them and Uber to the house to avoid the parking nightmare.

That night, rest your weary had at Hollywood’s famous Roosevelt Hotel or the iconic Chateau Marmont. If you’re staying closer to Hollywood, sample old school Italian at Dan Tana’s, rocker themed Thai at Toi On Sunset, or a martini (and Hollywood glam eats) at Musso and Frank’s.
View of DTLA from The Ace Hotel Rooftop by Nikki Lazaran
For a more modern look in one of LA newer properties, head downtown to The Ace Downtown, The Freehand, or The NoMad Hotel for the night. Enjoy dinner downtown at one of the many amazing establishments nearby, from The Exchange at The Freehand for delicious mediterranean, 71Above for 360 downtown views, and Preux and Proper for southern fair, to Bar Ama for elevated Tex-Mex.
Little Dom’s in Los Feliz. Photo by Michael Palumbo on @nikkthequick
EAST LA
If you’re in the area, grab breakfast at Little Dom’s (their french toast skillet is a must) or brunch at Trois Familia. The best coffee can also be found nearby at Eightfold, Dayglow or Woodcat, if espresso is your jam. For delicious pour-overs, Dinosaur has got you covered. Closer to lunch time? Night Market + Song is a on of my all-time favorites when I’m craving Thai.
If you have it in you, consider another hike - this time to the Griffith Observatory. head to the Fern Dell Park (near Trails Cafe) to begin your hike. Take the leisurely hour walk up to stunning views of the city below and the free planetarium! Head out early to avoid crowds.

BEVERLY HILLS, MIRACLE MILE & WEST HOLLYWOOD
A mere hop, skip, and a jump from East LA is Miracle Mile and a cluster of some of LA’s best museums. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art regularly features fantastic interactive exhibits from the likes of James Turrell and is recognized by it’s signature street light display out front. If there is a popular exhibit you’re looking to see, check online a few months in advance to purchase tickets. Plan on a few hours at the museum before grabbing lunch.
Backyard Bowls acai bowl. Photo by Nikki Lazaran
Try Cecconi’s for Italian and all the decor. Need a quick bite? Try Potato Chips for sandwiches, Mainland Poke for…well..poke, or Backyard Bowls for acai bowls. Something cute, but still sit down? Joan’s On Third, Croft Alley, Republique, or Gracias Madre (vegan friendly) are all safe bets.
Post-meal, it’s time to do what we Angelenos do best – drink coffee and shop. Hit up Melrose for vintage or eclectic clothing, Rodeo Drive for designer, or The Grove and The Beverly Center for a traditional mall with a potential celebrity citing. If it happens to be a Sunday, pay $3 cash to check out the Melrose Trading Post for everything from vintage furniture and succulents to records and handmade jewelry.
Some of my favorite cafes in the area include Verve Coffee Roasters, Coffee For Sasquatch, Smith & Tait, Coffee Commissary, and King’s Road Cafe. It may not be the best espresso in the city, but Carrera Cafe’s is known for their Ryan Gosling’s lattes, if that’s your jam.

MALIBU
It’s time to get out of the city and back to the beach, where every California dream begins. Head up the coast to Malibu and straight to the pier to enjoy lunch at Malibu Pier Cafe before jetting to El Matador Beach. If it’s too crowded for your taste, Zuma is also quite beautiful and slightly less popular.

For wine and some gorgeous Santa Monica mountains views, purchase tickets several weeks in advance online for the Malibu Wine Safari giraffe tour. You’ll spend the afternoon feeding and viewing exotic animals, including a giraffe named Stanley, and sipping wine in some of the most picturesque spots in Malibu wine country.

Spend the night at the newly opened boutique property, The Surfrider Malibu for all the California vibes you can handle or grab one of the many unique AirBnB’s in the area.

THE BEST SPOTS ALONG CALIFORNIA'S COAST: ORANGE COUNTY
Next stop along the California Coast: Orange County! Whether you are looking for Cinderella’s castle at Disneyland or a drive down Route 66, Nikki (@nikkthequick) is sharing her favorite spots this week. 🍊🍊🍊 Be sure to tag us or use #estcalifornia to share your California adventures too!

LET’S EXPLORE: ORANGE COUNTY
ORANGE COUNTY
Just a few hours drive from San Diego, you’ll find plenty of quintessential California “fun in the sun” in Orange County. First stop?
Photo by Meg Crade from @nikkthequick
ANAHEIM
Anaheim, better known as the home to Disneyland. No trip through Orange County is complete without it. Scoop up a day pass, plan to head to the park before they open and on a weekday to beat some of the crowds, and make sure to eat an oversized churro for me.
What are the must-do rides? It’s tough to choose, but some of the classics and a few of my favorites are:
The Haunted Mansion
Thunder Mountain
Splash Mountain
Indiana Jones Adventure
Space Mountain
It’s A Small World
Pirates Of The Caribbean
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride
Mad Tea Party (the “Tea Cups”)
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room
Grab all the fast passes you can to skip to the front of the line at your favorite rides.
Photo by Meg Crade from @nikkthequick
LAGUNA BEACH
If you’re looking for a relaxing seaside day sans the hoards of people at Disneyland, opt for a day in Laguna Beach, cruising Route 66. Grab a burger and milkshake from one of the many vintage diners, such as the cliffside Ruby’s on PCH (also called Crystal Cove Shake Shack), and go tide pooling during low tide at Shaw’s Cove or Crystal Cove Park. Don’t forget your water shoes so you can explore for critters on the sharp rocks!
Pro tip: Check the tides on the “Tides” app so you can determine the best time of day for your tide pooling adventures.
Not into exploring for creatures? Meander Crystal Cove State Park instead and take in the sea views. Or head to Victoria Beach to see the old stone light house. Fair warning: it pretty much disappears at high tide and can get quite crowded on weekends or during midday low tides.
If the surf is more your speed, join the locals at The Wedge or Thousand Steps Beach, but be prepared to walk the steps in (and more importantly) out. Once you’ve worked up an appetite from climbing all those steps, grab breakfast burritos or banana pancakes at Coyote Grill or make reservations at Nick’s Laguna Beach for a delectable steak dinner.

LET’S EXPLORE: SAN DEIGO

Southern California is known for its sunshine and surfer-strewn beaches and nowhere embodies that more than San Diego. First thing’s first - get outside with a visit to Belmont Park’s vintage fair rides or hike Point Loma all the way to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Feeling more adventurous? Try whale watching or sea kayaking.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, hit up some of the best grub in SD with a stoop into Herb and Eatery, Lionfish, Pisco Rotisserie for Peruvian fare, Born & Raised to sooth your steak cravings or Maestoso for delectable Italian. My ultimate recommendation? Ironside Fish & Oyster. Seafood is the way to go in this city and the folks at Ironside do tasteful nautical decor and massive seafood towers like nobody’s business. For more casual fair, The Grass Skirt specializes in poke bowls and Hawaiian cocktails set amidst a 50’s tiki bar.

No day in San Diego is complete without watching the sun dip below the horizon Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.
If you can muster the energy, head out for a night on the town in the Gaslamp Quarter. Bang, Bang and its famous Ryan Gosling women’s bathroom are a must-see. Ladies, only. Sorry, boys!
Rest your head for the night at Hotel del Coronado for a dose of 1800’s Victorian with modern interiors or the decadent Westgate Hotel. Looking for something a little more low-key? Hit up The US Grant. Seeking modern and millennial? The Pendry San Diego is your spot.

LA JOLLA
A natural stop on your way out of San Diego is the slightly sleepier, but equally sundrenched La Jolla, a mere 30 minutes north. Stroll La Jolla Cove to spot sunbathers and sea lions and harbor seals. Enjoy swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, or hunkering down on your claimed patch of shoreline for a seaside picnic. Land-lovers can hike nearby Torrey Pines State Reserve for stunning seaside views.

Adrenaline-seekers look no further - SD Expeditions specializes in half day cage-less shark encounters. Departing from the La Jolla marina, their tours take you several hours out into open water for the opportunity to free swim with blue sharks, mako sharks, and occasionally, hammerheads! This thrilling experience is not for the feint of heart and is certainly “swim at your own risk,” but I love few things more than a shark encounter.

As the day comes to a close, check the tide tables and head to Wipeout and Hospitals Beach for tide pooling at low tide. When low tide happens to coincide with sunset? Magic.

After a long day of exploring, make your way to one of La Jolla’s many delicious restaurants - most sporting a laidback and low-key vibe. A few favorites of mine include Whisknladle, Galaxy Taco (known for what, you ask? Tacos, duh), or El Pescador Fish Market. If you’re seeking fine dining, head to George’s At The Cove.
Overnight at one of my favorite boutique estancia-style hotels, Estancia La Jolla, or the equally adorable La Valencia Hotel.

Simple Styling Tips from Dulcet Creative
Amber and Kayla here of Dulcet Creative! We are here today excited to teach you a few simple styling tips that we’ve learned this year that we hope will help you with styling your images. Styling is a tool with unlimited possibilities.
Hey Est. California Readers!
Amber and Kayla here of Dulcet Creative! We are here today excited to teach you a few simple styling tips that we’ve learned this year that we hope will help you with styling your images. Styling is a tool with unlimited possibilities. If you’re a business you can use these tips to help you create a cohesive visual presence and help people to get to know you and your products better. If this is your first time souping up a shot, this will guide you through. In time, you’ll get faster and more daring as your styling mind develops! The end result will be beautiful, creative photos that not only showcase YOU, but also provide attention-grabbing images to show off in blogs, social media, newsletters or anywhere you find a promotional photo op!
#1. Choose your colors:
Choose one or two colors to weave through your scene in order to keep a cohesive visual harmony throughout your image. Choose your colors according to the message you want to convey. If you’re looking to create a fun, summer look, then use pops of bold color here and there to make a statement and use neutral colors for a more mellow, understated look. While there are times when all white on white can be visually striking, it is also fun to look for backgrounds that create contrast. So a pale colored food and plate gets a dark background whereas a vibrantly colored dish tends to be best with a simple white background.
#2. Keep it fresh:
You will rarely ever see a scene that we’ve styled without some kind of fresh element like fruit or greenery. Adding those pops of flowers or plants will breathe life into your images.
#3. Liven things up
Get a few work-in-progress shots. Bringing hands into your scene will add a human element that makes things more personal and real.
#4. Create Balance
Start simple and add more props for complexity. Play around with different lines, varieties of dark and light colors, lights and shadows, and so on until you find what you like. Your main focus will be to balance the different elements in order to create a pleasing aesthetic to the eye while keeping everything consistent with your brand and products. As always, trust your judgment and continue to step back and reassess to continually get a sense of what emotion you are looking to evoke.
Don’t be afraid to play around with white space. Set your props around the edges, or corners of your picture. This comes in handy if you ever put text over your images for website or blog purposes.

Getting Started is the Hardest Part
You hear people say it often: “Getting started is the hardest part.” Whether it is in reference to a diet, working out, a project; we can mostly agree that getting started on anything that puts you out of your comfort zone is no easy task.
After going to school and starting our “grown up jobs”, we both felt this mutual desire for something more. We dreamed of a place where we could use our talents and our passions to their full capacities, a place where we felt as though we were working towards something bigger than ourselves… We dreamed of being a part of a creative community that would challenge and inspire us. We were searching for something that we could not find and our response to this was to create it for ourselves. After deciding on the name DULCET which is sometimes defined as sweet, we coined this dream life of ours as “the sweeter life”.
Today we are truly living “the sweeter life”. We have both quit our jobs to pursue DULCET full time and are thrilled to say that our careers reflect our passion for the first time in our lives. We are finally doing what we truly love. Like most good things though, it hasn’t come easy. We want to share with you a little bit about the trials and frustrations that we experienced in the beginning of our journey and equip you with some of our tips for success if you are in the process of starting your own.
You hear people say it often: “Getting started is the hardest part.” Whether it is in reference to a diet, working out, a project; we can mostly agree that getting started on anything that puts you out of your comfort zone is no easy task. Procrastination, perfectionism, insecurity, fear and apathy are just a few of the issues we had to face when launching our business. What began with wild excitement could have easily ended in devastation if we didn’t learn how to deal with these frustrating barriers to success.
We realized quickly that starting your own business is like volunteering to take a ride on an emotional rollercoaster. For every tinge of excitement you feel there is a load of fear of the unknown that drops on your head like an anvil. For every all-nighter we spent dreaming about the exciting possibilities ahead of us there was a day full of troubleshooting web coding and trying to translate what the tech support representative was explaining to us on the other line. We spent days questioning ourselves and were constantly questioned by others as we tried to put our vision into words and paint a picture for people about what it would look like when we were finished. We got crazy looks and responses like “well… I hope that works out for ya” with a questioning shrug. We were not always supported in our pursuit. Then throw in a dash of insecurity and an aptitude to constantly compare yourself to the incredible talent in the world around you and you are questioning your dream of making “the sweeter life” your reality in no time.
We say all this not to scare you straight but to give you a fair warning about what you are up against and to let you know that if you feeling a little worn out or lost in the chaos; you are not alone.
After months of brainstorming, idea mapping, planning and strategizing, we ultimately came to the conclusion that if we waited until we had every detail of our business figured out than we would never get started. So we gave the perfectionist side of our brains a break and we just jumped in full force before all of our ducks were in a row. Looking back now, that leap of faith we took was the absolute best decision we have made this far.
So now, one year in, we almost feel like we are past the starting line. We have sharpened many of our skills throughout this past year and have added a lot of new ones to our skillset. We survived the trying first few months and would love to share some things that we learned in the process!
If you are considering pursuing a new endeavor:
1. Don’t do it alone.
Accountability is key. Use a friend, spouse or loved one not only as a sounding board for your ideas but as an accountability partner that will hold you to your commitments and help you to follow through with your ideas.
We had each other to keep motivated and without that we know for a fact DULCET would not exist today. There is power in numbers, people!
2. Write it down.
The ideas, the lessons, the doubts, the concerns, the triumphs; document it.
The beginning, like we said, is a whirlwind of emotion filled with highs and lows. Writing was a great way for us to sort through the web of ideas and feelings that was bombarding our minds.
3. Simplify the dream.
If you are anything like us, you are the visionary type. We get a thrill off of BIG, unthinkable dreams but the thought of doing the tactical work required to bring the vision to life makes us shudder. Take as much time as you need to slowly break down the big goals into small, realistic daily tasks. Once you have simplified the dream, half the battle is won.
4. Don’t compare yourself.
It can be so hard not to compare what you are producing to someone who is more experienced, has a clearer vision, has more cohesive branding or a larger following than you. There is a constant temptation to compare and that will always exist unless you have found a way to overcome that completely (fill us in on how to accomplish this if you have mastered it!) but for goodness sakes at least give yourself a break when you are just starting out!!
5. Be Positive!
It sounds cheesy and so obvious but it is way easier than you think to get down on yourself and go negative. We can’t tell you how many times we exchanged text messages to each other that said something like:
“WE ARE AWESOME… WE GOT THIS… WE CAN’T LOSE!!”
It became our little joke to be overly dramatic about every minor triumph throughout the process but in the end, it became something that was so necessary for our success. We pumped each other up and spewed out pep talks as much as possible. It brought us closer and made the whole process so much more fun.
If you are considering pursuing a new endeavor, we hope these tips were helpful and if you have any questions on this topic please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at info@dulcetcreative.com!

After finding love in front of millions of viewers on ABC's The Bachelor, our February Guest Editor, Catherine Lowe, is the perfect person to hang out with us for the month of love! She's been dishing about all things love all month long and we thought it was time to get to know a bit more about our favorite gal. This week enjoy the downLOWE!
What keeps you inspired?
I continue to stay inspired by keeping my eyes open and my mind spinning. Music, art and even memes excite me and make me want to create. Pinterest has been a huge asset for graphic, fashion and recipe ideas and all the wonderful travel I've been blessed with lately keeps monotony at bay. I encourage everyone to constantly challenge their senses and keep a sketch book to capture ideas! Be curious and boundless. Inspiration is ubiquitous.
What advice would you give to your
16-year-old self?
I would tell my 16 year old self to stop being so hard on my mom. Looking back, I could have been a little kinder and more forgiving because she's the bomb. That lady is one strong person to raise three pretty cool daughters on a teacher's salary :)
What’s your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of the day is first thing in the morning when I hear "Good morning sweetheart" which is immediately followed by three kisses: one on the forehead from Sean and two sloppy ones on the face by my girls. Luckiest girl in the world :)
Is the glass half empty or half full?
Who would ever admit to being half empty?! I'd like to think I'm a realist and my life is pretty dang great so glass half full. But that might be too optimistic because I complain a lot. I'm a moody girl, what can I say?
What’s your favorite kind of party?
Pajama Party! My friends have been throwing them recently and I'm a huge fan. Being comfortable in public is a rarity these days and I'm too old for being around skankiness which hardly ever happens at PJ parties. Plus, old school games are way too fun to pass up.
If you were to perform in the circus, what would you do?
Oh, I was meant to be in the circus. At age 8 I started riding a unicycle and found myself on a 6-footer in parades with fellow nerds. Since then, I've taken trapeze and aerial silk classes so I'd imagine I'd be what you call an "All-Around." Heck, I would even be up for being a clown as long as my name was Honkers. (Someone, please hire me.)
How has marriage changed you?
Marriage has changed me by striving for patience and accepting spontaneity. I used to be a planner but since Sean isn't that way at all, I've had to allow for the unexpected. I can be a real pain too so learning to say "I'm sorry, I love you" has been a huge change for me. I also have learned every single quarterback, coach and mascot currently in the NFL.
FUN DATE NIGHT IDEAS WITH GUEST EDITOR, CATHERINE LOWE
Catherine Lowe, is the perfect person to hang out with us for the month of love! This week, she's bringing us into her date nights with hubbie, Sean Lowe, to give you her tips about creating fun adventures with the one you love and how to keep it exciting!
After finding love in front of millions of viewers on ABC's The Bachelor, our February Guest Editor, Catherine Lowe, is the perfect person to hang out with us for the month of love! This week, she's giving you her tips on how to create fun adventures with the one you love.
With a raised brow and baited breath, Valentine’s Day is left for the men to get right, so give him a break and listen closely. Date Nights are at the top of Sean and my list when it comes to spending intentional and weekly time together. Yes, we are “inseparable” but I’d hardly consider playing games on our iPads while watching Gold Rush quality time. That’s why, when we have free time in our schedule, I expect a date night with my hubs. Here are just a few of my tips to start thinking about what you should plan for your man in the coming weeks:
Something Messy
It's no secret that Sean and I are pizza fanatics, but it may be less known that I love to be in the kitchen with my man. Homemade pizzas are great for any situation, for any flavor preferences, and for any stage of a relationship. A third date to a husband (and all things in between) can enjoy a date that involves you potentially covered in food ;) The key is the quality of ingredients and your pizza partner. Whether or not he's actually contributing, he's pretty to look at while things get a little messy. The foreplay starts at the grocery store so keep that in mind. Communicating what you like on your pie and hearing his favorite flavors gets your appetites whet. Don't skimp on anything (I spring for the expensive cheese and meats) because you won't want the first time to be the last time too. Get it cookin in the kitchen. Wink!
Something Active
Doing something active with your guy is undeniably fun. It's nostalgic, upbeat and just a little friendly competition. It's also something your guy probably loves! And pleasing him is pretty darn important. My personal faves: driving range, batting cages, bike riding, kayaking. And if you're drinking buddies too, a lot of places these days have the option to drink responsibly while you play. Just don't get too serious about winning...having fun is the victory!
Something 50's
Expect to be asked to "go steady" after you plan this wholesome date idea: a picnic! I planned an evening in our backyard early in our marriage and it was so sweet. To make it grown-up and very personalized, choose foods you know you'll both enjoy and don't JUST bring PB&Js. I homemade paninis and wrapped them like a fancy deli would and packaged gourmet Mac and cheese in tupperware, among other tasty, easy to eats. This date is conducive for simple romance and uninterrupted conversation. Just make sure to truly take it back to the 50's and ditch the cell phones :)
Something New
I love learning new things with my honey and date nights are a great time to focus on that. Anyone can take you to a movie but why don't you surprise him with a day learning archery or chess?! When you challenge and pave the way for your guy, it gets him thinking creatively about how to one up you next time he has to plan date night. The best places to get ideas is from friends and Pinterest! Oh and Groupon always has get deals on things to try in your area.
Something Trippy
If you have access to a car and a free weekend, take a trip! Road trips are great for the couple who can spend long periods of time together--which should be all couples! Create a playlist of jams you both can get down on and some potential stops you might want to make. Since you won't have a strict timeline, you'll be more likely to jump on spontaneous opportunities that come up! Read suggestions on Yelp so you don't get stuck in a sketchy place. But if you do, won't that be a fun story?! Don't forget snacks to keep in the car and shades to keep on your face :)
AN INSIDE LOOK OF CATHERINE LOWE'S DALLAS BASED HOME

After finding love in front of millions of viewers on ABC's The Bachelor, our February Guest Editor, Catherine Lowe, is the perfect person to hang out with us for the month of love! This week, she's bringing us into her home with hubbie, Sean Lowe, to give you her tips about creating a new home with the one you love (all with the help of a few Spice Girls songs).
When I moved to Dallas, I took the essentials: my clothes and my computers. Other than that, I knew that Sean and I would create something unique to us when we found that perfect house. And when we did, we did. Our house is our most favorite place in the whole wide world because we had been planning it for so long. Little known fact, at our Canada cocktail party before the rose ceremony, our limited time together was spent frolicking (duh), laughing (double duh) and sharing the things we wanted in a home. “A big porch”…”Me too!”…giggle giggle…“I want a nice kitchen with an island”… “Oooh, that sounds nice…” What a coupla nerds.
But creating the home we wanted didn’t come as easy as reciting our dream lists. He is a southern, tidy man and I’m an eclectic, messy girl after all. Our needs sometimes didn’t match up perfectly. Luckily, there are girl bands to save the day. Anything you need to know about merging two lives together can be learned from The Spice Girls’ song “2 Become 1.” (Do not take this literally. Please keep reading.) Whether you’re moving in with someone you’re dating or you’re creating a home with your husband, there are tips that I’ve learned from experience that hopefully help you with your Relationship & Abode Fondue…all through Spice Girls lyrics.
“Empty words we both were saying”
Be honest. When you are building your special place with that special someone, be upfront about what you need. From something as specific as “I need a space where my cat poster collection will be preserved” to something as generic as “I need to feel safe”, tell him—nicely yet directly. Mine was “I need it to feel warm and ours.” If he knows what is important to you, he should respect that. If you’re moving into his place and everything still looks like a bachelor pad (har har), ask him to incorporate more of what you like into it. It is yours now too. Also, shut your mouth when it doesn’t matter. Do you really care if the curtains are that color? No? Then be supportive and move on to something that matters.
“I had a little love, now I’m back for more”
WANT to come home. You’re gonna want to go on date nights, but you should also be excited to get home. Make a space that you both absolutely adore so you can create memories together somewhere that was truly created together. Sean and I have a room that is built for comfort. It’s our TV room and we call it “The Pit” because once you’re in, you’ll never get out. This place is where we find so much joy and when we’re on the road, we have dreams about getting back to it. Form a room or space in your home that makes you feel comfortable and completely yourself. Then, go out so you can be excited to come home.
“I’ll submit to your every need but you also gotta listen to me”
(Not true lyrics, but let’s pretend. Also, should I be a songwriter or what?!)
Respect each other. The only doormat in our house is the one that says “Sup.” Neither one of us takes a backseat in the decision-making of our relationship or our house because we are both integral voices. Sean and I have been lucky enough to share a similar taste in home décor but I have (respectively) had to put my foot down when he was trying to bring his jank college guy pots and pans into my pristine kitchen. When it comes to décor, ladies don’t get too floofy on him because he’ll want to have his buddies over and you don’t want him to be the butt of every joke because of your doing. Don’t emasculate him but I’m all for bringing up the class level in your new grown up spot.
This is the space you both will call home and that in itself is pretty darn special. Enjoy the piles of dirty dishes, the toilet seat being up, the new homeowner sales pitchy mail, the 24/7 ESPN. And... all the sweet goodnight kisses. You can’t forget about those :)
MEET OUR FEBRUARY GUEST EDITOR: CATHERINE LOWE
After finding love in front of millions of viewers on ABC's The Bachelor, Catherine (then Giudici) shared her story with fans all over the world. All month long we'll be talking all things domestic and love....with a twist.
Boy oh Boy, do we have a treat for you. We've lined up the perfect Guest Editor for the month of love! After finding love in front of millions of viewers on ABC's The Bachelor, Catherine (then Giudici) continued to share her story with fans all over the world as she and now husband, Sean Lowe, promised to spend their lives together in front of ABC cameras. The two just celebrated their first of many anniversaries together and we thought what better person to help us talk love than Catherine.
From the moment we met Catherine, she brought a creative spark and level of enthusiasm unlike any other we'd encountered. A skilled graphic designer, she brings her fresh and quirky personality to every project. Lending her talents to a variety of lifestyle projects, she is the perfect example of the every day working entrepreneurial women. And she has now added wife to her list of duties. All month long we'll be talking all things domestic and love...with a twist. It's about to get weird. First let's get to know your new favorite gal....
LETTER TO THE READERS:
I'll be the first to admit: I'm no expert. Heck, I don't even know if that was the correct usage of a colon, but I do what I can. In the least egotistical way -- I hope -- I love talking about myself. I've had some wonderful and unique experiences in my life and love sharing what I've learned with the people I care about. Established California is giving me the opportunity to do exactly that and it's exactly why I am someone to listen to: love.
It's February, the month that some people consider to be the month of love, so I'd like to think my current situation makes people give a hoot about my perspective on love and relationships. Maybe not, whatever, imma share my thoughts and advice on the topic either way! I hope you follow my guest column this month and enjoy it :)
xoxo,

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Today we are discussing how to take those left over party elements and refresh them for a great New Year's Party. After all, you put all that work into your holiday arrangements, why not let them take center stage as long as possible?! Last week was all about party accessories and this week we are going to talk about how you can take those accessories and reuse them for future parties. With the New Year right around the corner, this is the perfect time to take all of our Christmas party decor and find a way to bring it to use in your New Year's shindig!

From the California Christmas ideas we shared last week, you can take elements such as the succulents and florals and reuse them for your January festivities. With a little gold spray paint, the succulents are completely transformed. You can use white vases from your previous event to create the centerpieces fro the table settings. Just add some simple white florals from your local Trader Joes... Just like that our Christmas party decor was transformed into New Years wedding decor and fashion accessories! It's that simple!
Party planning is a great way to bring family and friends together. You get to create with a few elements in your home and reuse decor you have purchased for multiple events. So don't let holiday hosting weigh you down. We hope we have been able to inspire you with different ways to throw your own holiday and New Year's party without breaking the bank!

Last week on the we talked about the main components of a party and gave you a peek at how we included those ideas in our holiday party! This week, we wanted to give you some party accessory ideas, including some of our favorite DIY's.
DETAILS
The tablescape is typically the focal event of a party - the centerpieces will be your main decor, your guests will be wining and dining at the table and conversation will flow. So this is where the details will matter most! For our party, we put a personalized namecard at each setting, and added a fun braided detail. The braids were easy to DIY ourselves with strips of fabric, and really tied the place settings together. You can pick up materials for this at your local craft store. Don't be afraid to get creative! Fabric, string or twine are great options.
FAVORS
The other key to a great party is a memorable favor for your guest to take home. It's their final impression of the night, and we want it to be a good one! For our event, we made a favor that doubled as event decor - ornament cookies. The cookies hung from a tree during the party bringing in some holiday cheer. At the end of the night, the guests received a goodie bag and got to pick a cookie from the tree to take home. This is a simple DIY that just requires cookie dough, cookie cutters and frosting. When making the cookies be sure to leave a hole at the top for the string to hang from the tree. From there, the design is up to you! Choose frosting and edible accents in the color scheme and theme of your event.
ENTERTAIN
Lastly, be sure your guests have a little entertainment! It can be a group activity like cookie decorating station, a photo booth or event offer plain wreaths to decorate. For our event we set up a scent station where guests were able to make their own perfumes or body scrubs to take home. We included fun holiday scents like pine, peppermint and nutmeg!
Party accessories are the elements tie your party together and add a little pizzazz! The details will be what makes your night memorable. So whether you're DIY'ing or not, be sure to add personalized and cute accents that your guests will be talking about all night. We hope our Christmas party décor and DIY brought some inspiration to your upcoming parties!

It is that time of year again..The holidays! With the holiday's come the parties, and I am so excited to share my party planning advice with you! Whether you are going to a party or throwing it, it is so good to know party planning basics! I am going to show you the basic anatomy of a party with all of its major components, as well as how to achieve high end decor on a budget! After this you will be ready to tackle any party that comes your way!
Any party, whether it be a bridal or baby shower, a birthday party, dinner party, or even a holiday party, all have the same basic elements! The major components to any party include:
Create the Setting
This is your time to create the overall ambiance of your party, and where decor and details are very important. The mood of your event can be altered by changing the lighting of the room and having candles mixed within the decor. This is also a great time to consider making your guests feel special by adding little personalized details to your party such as a name card above their place setting, a personalized menu, or even a favor that the guests get to take home with them (look out for our favor DIY next week!) It is important to choose decor that not only corresponds with the theme of your event, but is also esthetically pleasing to your guests!
Food and Drink
This is another great time to personalize your event for your guests! it is important to be mindful of your guests likes and dislikes or any aversions they may have to different foods when planning your menu! Make sure to not only choose items that will appeal to the majority of the group, but also try to plan the menu to fist the theme or time of year your event takes place! For our Christmas party, we chose to plan a menu full of winter salads, comfort food, and an array of winter themed desserts to correspond with the time of year and occasion!
The Tablescape
The table is a very important element because that is where the guest will be entertained! Don't be afraid to pull from items you already have from home, or even collect some decor from places such as Target, Home Goods, or T.J. Max! It is important to step out of the box when setting your decor and tablescape so your items can be reused for any future events you may host! For our event we went with a more modern Christmas theme in order to include unexpected elements such as the wood to tie in our soft florals and more desert-like plants.
We wanted to keep our arrangements low so our guests could see one another and converse over dinner, but also create some depth to our table. For floral centerpieces, we find it is best to start with a neutral base and add pops of color! As you can see from our Christmas party we had neutral white florals in combination with pops of bright red flowers and a hint of mint from the succulents. For our table settings we placed a menu on top of our plate and napkin and tied it down with braided fabric (We are sharing this DIY next week)! We then added name cards above each individual place setting - adding a personal touch! Lastly, food presentation is very important. It is such a great touch to have pretty platters and risers to serve the food, drinks, and desserts to keep the look of the party appealing!
I hope this inspired you to throw a party of your own! With the party basics I gave you, you now have some ideas on how to have a great party with amazing decor, but on a smaller budget!

JUST A COUPLE QUESTIONS........
Was there a defining moment you knew you wanted to create IBT?
In 2009 was working in the wedding industry as my day job and blogs were just starting to pop up. Most focused only on the real weddings, and I wanted to share more about the process leading up to the wedding (proposals, engagement parties, bridal showers, etc.) in addition to weddings. After I got married in 2010, we decided to add post-wedding content too while sharing home and apartment inspiration, and children/family content so that our readers could stay and grow with us!
What keeps you inspired?
My family! My husband encourages me to keep hard working at what I love, and my daughter inspires me to create work I'm really proud of. I want her to know she can do anything she puts her mind to.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
Don't be afraid to pursue your passions. It may not work out exactly the way you planned, but loving what you do is success. Be nice to everyone along your path, you never know who will give you your first break appreciate them. Keep your relationships friendly, honest, and true and it will take you much further in life then undercutting people and constantly having your hand out.
What do you love most about California?
I love the variety California has to offer - I can spend my day at the beach or drive about 2 hours and spend it at a cabin in a forest or at a beautiful vineyard sipping wine. There's no place like it!
Favorite product for hosting? Why?
A great butcher-block board! It's perfect for appetizers, cheeses, meats... and it makes everything look great!
What’s your favorite part of the day?
Dance parties with my little girl when I get home from work!
What’s your dream CA vacation?
Heading up to Northern California - spending a few days enjoying the city life in San Francisco and then escaping to Napa and staying at a cute inn drinking wine and relaxing.
What is the best dish you bring to a party?
The perfect appetizer board - a variety of cheeses and charcuterie and all the accoutrements - honey, homemade jams, nuts, olives and a fresh baguette. There's something for everyone!
Name one thing that not many people know about you.
I'm a huge country fan! I own 3 pairs of cowboy boots, multiple plaid shirts and a cowboy hat and can sing along to pretty my any country song on the radio. It's my dream to one day go to Stagecoach!
Favorite party detail?
The flowers! Flowers really bring a table setting together and tie in all of the décor, they're the finishing touch.
What’s your favorite kind of party? (Holiday? Dress up? Shower)
I love everything about holiday parties - bundling up with boots and scarves, mulled wine and spiked cider, homemade pies, Christmas decor - trees, stockings, lights and garlands, pine-scented candles and having friends and family in town.
What’s on your current playlist?
When you have a toddler, Seasame Street songs are a constant rotation! But when I have a few minutes to myself, I listen to a mix of Indie - Mumford and Sons and Angus and Julia Stone on some days and Country on others - Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean are a few of my faves!
