31 BITS: A DAY IN THE LIFE W/ ALLI
The four talented women behind the handcrafted jewelry company, 31 Bits, have teamed up with us to be our October Guest Editors. This week we got to talk with Alli (a walking Yelp) who is always in-the-know of new restaurants.
The four talented women (Anna, Alli, Jessie and Kallie) behind the handcrafted jewelry company, 31 Bits, have teamed up with us to be our October Guest Editors. Their company provides jobs to women in Uganda to encourage them to "rise above poverty" and at the same time, allow YOU to make a direct impact on the women's lives in Uganda (because they are entirely funded by the product sales!)
This week we got to talk with Alli (a walking Yelp) who is always in-the-know of new restaurants. She's 31 Bits' go-to person when they are looking for the best places to get food and drinks (in just about any city you can think of). She's sharing with us what her typical Friday looks like, in addition to some of her favorite spots in Southern California.
6am :: wake up + head to the gym!
7:30am :: have my morning coffee, read, and check emails
8:30am :: head out the door, and make a quick stop at Nekter for a green juice or smoothie.
9am :: in the office. Mornings are typically spent catching up with the girls about what they did that night, current events, and recipe-swapping. ;) THEN it's work time! Typically, first, I answer emails and post on 31 Bits social media accounts.
10am :: Marketing interns show up, and I'm training + assigning tasks for them.
12pm :: Lunch time! Favorite place to grab a quick, healthy bite is Bear Flag. The best fish tacos on the west coast!!
2pm :: Brainstorm meeting with Jessie and the interns about upcoming events and campaigns.
3:30pm :: Our Finance Director, Rob, comes into the office with hot-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies! We are ALL obsessed with his cookies... it's our end of the week treat!
5:00pm :: Wrap things up in the office. Make sure I have our media calendar set for the weekend, answer last minute emails, and send the interns home!
5:30pm :: Evening bike ride with my hubbie. Our favorite after-work tradition! We get some exercise, share about our day, and try to catch the sunset!
7:30pm :: Date night at one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants, Eat Chow. I always order the same thing - the vegetarian tostada! Bobby loves the Chow BBQ burger. And the truffle parmesan fries. (We both really love food!!)
10:00pm :: Meet up with friends for drinks and dancing at a local underground bar, La Cave for 90's night - thanks to cover band Sega Genecide!

GRACIAS MADRE: A One-of-a-Kind Plant Based Mexican Restaurant
I was recently in West Hollywood and decided to check out Mexican Restaurant, Gracias Madre. I could literally eat Mexican food everyday, specifically here in Los Angeles, and am very intrigued with the idea of Mexican cuisine that does not incorporate meat. I didn’t really know what to expect.

Disclaimer: I am not vegan. Now that I got that off my chest, I want all meat lovers reading this to stick with me here since the food at Gracias Madre was so delicious. When I walked in, I was blown away by the décor. The indoor dining area and large patio were both very spacious and comfortable. The colors were bright and welcoming with beautiful tiles surrounding a bar showcasing extensive tequila options.
Gracias Madre exceeds expectations with its “organic, farm fresh, locally sourced, full of flavor and love” cuisine. Executive Chef Chandra Gilbert has an impressive repertoire, including Café Gratitude (esteemed vegan restaurant) as Director of Operations. Beverage Director Jason Eisner has made a menu that highlights small-batch mezcals and tequilas. Even the cocktails are made with local ingredients and house made syrups.
Now, let’s talk about the menu. I chose to start with the gordita appetizer that was a potato masa cake, with warm salsa verde, avocado, and cashew crema. Surprisingly, the crema tasted very similar to sour cream and it was really light. I was also drawn to the coconut ceviche tostada. That one blew my mind. They take coconut meat and slice it into little pieces,adding lime juice, guacamole, pico de gallo and lettuce. The texture felt exactly like what a fish ceviche would. It was delicious. Their menu had plenty of different options and the staff was very knowledgeable. Popular items include flash-fried cauliflower with cashew nacho cheese and lemon or the potato and chorizo made of tempeh quesadilla. Gracias Madre also offers Brunch on the weekends and an even more extensive dinner menu. Check it all out here.
The drink program there is also quite impressive. Options include a Boozy Popsicle with Mezcal, pineapple and jalapeno or snow cones like La Quinceanera featuring tequila blanco, muddled kiwi, mint, lemon, agave nectar, lime bitters, and shaved ice. My favorite hour is happy hour and theirs is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Options include $5 margaritas and some food items at a discounted price.
I cannot wait to go back, and didn’t miss eating meat at all while at Gracias Madre. The menu is so different from typical Mexican and the flavors really shine, so I totally forgot it was even vegan. I would definitely recommend it and am excited for a fresh approach on Mexican, my favorite cuisine. Meatless Mondays is sounding better and better.

There are few things I love more than decorating my home for fall. The colors, the fall leaves, the warm rustiness of it all.. I could go on and on. So this month I'm sharing a few of my favorite items from one of my favorite stores in the Bay Area, The Makery.
There are few things I love more than decorating my home for fall. The colors, the fall leaves, the warm rustiness of it all, I could go on and on. So this month I'm sharing a few of my favorite items from one of my favorite stores in the Bay Area, The Makery.
The Makery opened in downtown Los Altos in the Spring of 2013 and has been blossoming ever since. The idea for the store was to bring DIY projects, unique retail, custom items, events and more to people. The Makery has done just that! They offer open studio time where guests can come in and make a project of choice with a master crafter. They also offer special events like a monthly Craft Club, which puts a crafty spin on the classic book club. My personal favorite is that you can host your own special event complete with custom crafts!
They recently moved their sister store, The Botanist, in with them to add a little more to their already amazing collection of treats. Their well curated collection includes paper goods, fresh cut arrangements, a felt bar and more. The Makery is my go-to when I'm in need of a thoughtful and unique gift.
1. Rustic Runners
I really like runners for tables; they are the perfect simple canvas to start with when you are putting together a tablescape. These towel fabrics can be cut to any length so they are a custom fit for your table. Don't have dinning table? Dress up your coffee table with one and add some flowers and pumpkins for even more pop.
2. Candles
I love the amber glass that Sydney and Hale Co use for their bluegrass and juniper candles. The scent is the perfect combination of crisp and warm and will carry you through the season. I also LOVE tapered candle sticks for fall and these black all natural beeswax ones pair perfectly with the colors of fall. *Fun fact when you are all done with the candle the glass would make a beautiful vase.
3. Felt Balls
Felt and Fall go hand in hand for me and I love these felt garland kits for a little DIY fun to spruce up your mantle. I like to mix in a few jewel tones with the warmer tones of fall to add a little pop.
4. Gold Metallic Letters
I love a good metallic and gold is the perfect color to mix in with the browns, oranges, and reds of fall. This vintage gold F would be perfect to hang on your front door and an alternative to the classic wreath.
5. Pumpkins!
And last but not least Pumpkins! My favorite pumpkins to use throughout the season are Cinderella pumpkins. Their colors and whimsy factor make them the perfect addition to your front porch or even a selection of them would be a stunning centerpiece.
So the next time you find yourself in downtown Los Altos, stop into The Makery and let your creative juices flow! You’ll thank me later!

OLD TOWN TEMECULA, CA
The streets of Old Town Temecula are quaint and kind. People seem to walk a little slower and really take in the sights around them. All the little shops are primarily local businesses, which gives it an even more intimate vibe. There were pleasant surprises around every corner!
I was born and raised in Temecula, California. Growing up there, you tend to start to take for granted all of the gorgeous scenery and this town has to offer. Naturally, I gravitated towards wanting to write about Old Town Temecula, because I know how loved it is. But to be honest, I was kind of dreading spending my morning down there to photograph it. It was going to be a hot day and I had a lot on my to-do list.
I got there early, before it was too crowded, parked my car at one end and planned to take my time and slowly walk all the way down to the other end. Slowly strolling along, I realized, there was no where else I would have rather been. Even though, I had been on those streets hundreds of times, I was exploring them again, with new eyes. Old Town has still got it! It’s great for a date, family outing, or just some solo time for yourself.
I really felt like I was back in time. The streets of Old Town Temecula are quaint and kind. People seem to walk a little slower and really take in the sights around them. All the little shops are primarily local businesses, which gives it an even more intimate vibe. There were pleasant surprises around every corner!
“Old Town” really is an old town. Through out the streets, with new restaurants and shops, there are also, real historic buildings, and pieces of buildings, that add to it’s charm.
Old Town is stacked with restaurants, as well. The most famous restaurants, in my humble opinion, are; The Bank (Mexican food), Rosas Cantina (Mexican food), Mad Madelines (burgers), and Swing Inn Cafe (breakfast). As a “local,” I’ve only eaten at Rosas Cantina and the Swing Inn and I have nothing, but great things to say! So, definitely stop by one of those if you’re in the area.
You also don’t want to miss Old Town RootBeer Company. They boast a huge selection of rootbeers and other sodas in classic, glass bottles and a nice porch to sit on. It’ll transport ya right back to when rocking in rocking chairs was cool.
There are antique shops, old record shops, clothing shops, all sort of knick knack shops, and of course restaurants, spas, and wine tasting venues. It’s the perfect place for an absolutely delightful day. Start at one end and just mosey all the way down to the other. It’s a great way to slow your world down and enjoy life for a few hours.
Old Town has also revamped it’s night life. The weekends are hoppin’! But that’ll be for another time, in another article. Cheers, friends!

These simple sentences speak volumes and there is a company who is doing a stellar job at helping us to remember to enjoy the NOW and appreciate what is in front of us (you!) - That company is Affirmats.
Founder, Jason Graham, started Affirmats in 2012. This is what he had to say about his journey.
"It all began from my Grandmother's living room when I was 8 years of age. I used to lay on my back and make my spine bend backwards while catching myself with my hands.
This strange movement made me feel invincible and omnipotent. I would perform this movement involuntarily day after day. My family members thought that I was a peculiar, unconventionally bizarre kid. While everyone else was outside playing sports, I was content with making my spine bend.
I was also a kid who talked to himself. To say that I was eccentric would be an understatement. I was far from common. During the discovery of this spine bending phenom, I would strum the words, “I am Healthy, I am Wealthy, I am LOVE” over and over again.
Fast forward to 28 years later when I went to my first yoga class. While in class, the instructor yelled out a pose called “Upward Bow.” Me, being a novice, had no idea what this instructor was talking about. Was I to look up at the ceiling? Was this some sort of hybrid yoga hunting class? As I begin to look around the room, I saw something very familiar. I saw that spine bending thingy I used to do when I was 8. Talk about an "AH-HA" moment. I was beginning to feel quite nostalgic. The spine bending exercise I was doing years ago had a name. It was called: UPWARD FACING BOW. "I wasn’t crazy after all," I thought. "I have found MY PEOPLE!"
After about a year of taking yoga classes consistently, I learned how to shut off my mind. If Upward Bow was my first and favorite pose, my second favorite was Shavasana aka Corpse Pose. One day, while in this pose, I began reminiscing about my 8 year old self and how I would do Back Bends and utter the words, “I am Healthy, I am Wealthy, I am Love.” Then it hit me. I, then, realized that those words were affirmations and that I HAD to put them on a yoga mat for me to look at and manifest while I am practicing yoga. It was at that moment when Affirmats was born."
We sat down with Founder (Jason Graham), Project Director (Kelsea Davis) and Sales Guru (Jessica Jablonski) to talk more about Love, Life and what keeps them inspired.

Best Hidden Gem in LA..
Jason: Maison 140 Beverly Hills Hotel. It's a no frills Boutique hotel and I love the furnishings and small lobby bar. It feels like a Bed and Breakfast. A great getaway without getting away.
Kelsea: The hiking trail that you can walk from Sherman Oaks to the beach almost in Malibu.
Jessica: Little Dume, Malibu. Everything about it is pure Perfection.
The moment I feel in love with Yoga:
Jason: You had me at "downward dog"
Kelsea: In high school my Swim Coach started making our dry-lands practices yoga. I thought it was fun just to play and stretch instead of lift weights the first time I tried it. The next day I was so sore I could barely walk. It hit me instantly... I could have fun playing yoga and still get a work out from it. I became madly in love with Yoga immediately after playing on the mat.
Jessica: I fell in Love with Yoga years and years after I started practicing. I have always enjoyed it but about three years ago I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and it became a Love.
Yoga taught me that I was strong, flexible and able to breathe through fear and discomfort. I am convinced it helped me get through that really tough time. I fell in Love with Yoga then, but my love grows more and more as yoga helps me enjoy this roller coaster ride of life.

We couldn't be more excited to announce our first Guest Editors for Established California! Meet the ladies behind 31 Bits, a company that uses fashion and design to empower people to rise above poverty.
When we first started chatting with the ladies of 31 Bits, we instantly fell in love with these four unique, fiesty and beautiful women. Co-Founders (Kallie Dovel, Alli Swanson, Jessie Simonson and Anna Toy) are raising awareness in the consumer market to do something GOOD in the world. 31 Bits is a collection of Ugandan-made jewelry and accessories - all made with beads from recycled paper (yes, paper)! Every purchase made from 31 Bits has a direct impact on women's lives in Uganda because everything they do is funded from product sales. (We can get behind that!).
So this month, we'll be diving in deeper with these remarkable women to give you a closer look at not only the work that they do, but also who they are as individuals. Here's what the ladies of 31 Bits have to say...
Dear Est. California Readers,
We’re the girls from 31 Bits and we’re thrilled to give you a glimpse into our world throughout the month of October! We’re not your likely business entrepreneurs. We prefer cut off shorts and happy hours. Sometimes we dye our hair pink and purple and sometimes we take a dip in the ocean during our lunch break. We love throwing parties, riding bikes, eating frozen yogurt, and traveling.
We’ve become besties since starting 31 Bits. We’re always asked how we’ve managed to own a business together and still stay friends, but to be honest, we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re all totally different from each other, sort of a misfit group of dreamers, socialites, and artists. But the common thread that holds us together is our desire to empower women in Uganda. We don’t let differences get in the way. Instead, we use them to make each other better because 31 Bits has become much bigger than we are.
We started 31 Bits in 2008, during our senior year at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. We were carefree 21-year-olds, living for the moment and not ready to enter corporate America. So we didn’t! During a life-changing trip to Uganda, we met women who grew up in a time of war and had nothing. Some were single moms, some had never been to school before, and many of them were our age! The women were making incredible jewelry out of recycled paper, but had no way to sell it. The more time we spent with them, the more we knew we had to do something. We didn’t know the first thing about starting a business, but it didn’t matter. We committed ourselves to learning everything we could about international business, the jewelry industry, and development work. Six years ago, we were employing six women in Uganda. Thanks to an amazing team and amazing customers, we now have 170 women in our program who are rising above poverty through employment and education.
The last six years was filled with both challenges and successes, both tears and laughter…but outweighing it all is the endless joy we’ve gained through watching women’s lives in Uganda change. Our motto at 31 Bits is “Work hard. Play hard.”…and we’re going to show you how to do just that the California way. The Line Hotel Commissary
For anyone living in LA, or if you’re thinking about coming to visit, check out The Line Hotel in Koreatown! Not only is there amazing food and great karaoke in the area, but Chef Roy Choi, known for Kogi Truck, A Frame, and Sunny Spot (to name a few), has really out done himself with the Food and Beverage aspect of the hotel.

For anyone living in LA, or if you’re thinking about coming to visit, check out The Line Hotel in Koreatown. Not only is there amazing food and great karaoke in the area, but Chef Roy Choi, known for Kogi Truck, A Frame, and Sunny Spot (to name a few), has really out done himself with the Food and Beverage aspect of the hotel.
The newest restaurant recently opened, Commissary, is definitely one to put on the to do list of where to eat next. On the second floor of the hotel, the restaurant is set up in a green house surrounded by beautiful plants, which sits next to an outdoor pool deck bordered with chairs and comfy couch seating. The concept is plant based but it’s not all veggies, it’s just what’s highlighted. One can find a burger, or a steak, French dip and other fantastic eats.
Once seated, a menu is handed to me, and all that’s shown are pictures of ingredients such as egg, lettuce, and scallops. After ordering, they surprise you with a dish featuring that ingredient that was chosen. It’s a highly innovative way to do a menu and I’m sure some people may freak, but I enjoyed the new take on it . Since no descriptions are given of the food creations, diners must have complete trust that if the ingredient is liked, the dish created will be delicious. My favorite dishes were the carrots, scallops and eggs. It’s tough to give descriptions being that there were none to go by on the menu, but the eggs were over medium and came with sauces that were delicious and really packed some heat. The prices are reasonable with a steak being the highest price at $28.
The drinks were fabulous as well. I tried the blueberry, bourbon, cucumber, Peruvian black mint drink and it totally delivered. It was smoky yet refreshing. The White Peach cocktail with pisco was also very refreshing and perfectly sweet. Commissary is the best place to go right now to have a fruity delicious drink and then go to the pool on the deck and hang out to cool off with this September weather.
Commissary is now open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. With the beautiful and colorful space, it’s hard not to enjoy a drink casually or go for a romantic dinner. Anyone can feel good about going there to have some veggies, a gin and juice and lay out by the pool.

Girls just wanna have fun, right? Well Jordan Jones at Packed Party is proving that to be true. A transplant from Texas, this free spirit moved to California seeking adventure and embarking on a new job. But in making the move to the golden state, Jordan found herself without her friends, with little to no social calendar and ultimately fired from her job for pursing an idea she was passionate about, Packed Party.
It was just under one year ago she decided to throw caution to wind, took a true leap of faith and started Packed Party. As a teenager Jordan had experienced mean girls in high school, but never allowed that to get her down. She would commonly throw a ‘party for one’ and now in her early adult years, alone in San Francisco, that party for one had found its way back to her. Feeling down on herself and throwing what we are all guilty of having every once in awhile, a pity party, Jordan got a bright idea. Wouldn’t it be great to send a packaged party to friends when life’s moments get them down, or up!
Sure she may have been in the land of entrepreneurs and start-ups mere miles from the Silicon Valley, but she was just a regular Texan girl chasing a California dream.
After convincing her family to invest in her idea she grew her company from packing parties in her garage to a warehouse shipping internationally. She took a little idea and grew it into something great. Believing in her creativity and feeling established in her sense of self, suddenly Jordan was building a business and surviving on her own.
The ideas for parties are endless, although Jordan is selective about the product she uses and the themes of packages. Carefully selecting and sourcing product to offer unique packages, these parties are in demand. The Miss you Bitch party is restocking for the sixth time!
It’s your party and you’ll cry if you want to? That’s fine, there’s a party for that! Paying homage to how it all began, Packed Party offers a Pity Party for that friend who is singing the blues, or in this case navy. Why navy? The answer is simple, it’s feminine and goes with just about anything! And as Packed Party grows they work to develop packages you can send to all you friends, including guys. And guys love Navy!
We had a chance to talk with Jordan about all things Packed Party and how she purses her own golden state of mind. Here's what she had to say:
Leaving your job to pursue this venture must have been a scary decision. When did you know taking the leap of faith was right?
I think it’s hard to know a good time to ever really take the leap to pursue what you love full-time. There’s always going to be major risk involved and I was in the process of weighing out the risk when I was sort of pushed out of my job in Silicon Valley for actually working on Packed Party.
Today I get it of course, and know it was the best thing that ever happened to me, but at the time I was a little mortified. I had never so much as been sent to the hall in elementary school for getting in trouble, so it came as a bit of a shock to me when they said I had to choose between working there or running Packed Party. As it turns out though, as embarrassing and scary as it was being let go of for pursuing my dream, they made the best decision for me and the whole experience gave me the major push I needed to pursue Packed Party full-time. Immediately after I created our blog, added new packages to our line, and gave that extra time I was giving to someone else’s dream to my own.
What keeps you inspired?
Living in San Francisco makes it easy to be inspired to be totally honest. I try to go on a walk every single day at some point and take a different path. The colors on the houses around the neighborhood, hearing the buzz around the city, and hearing people’s stories of starting businesses pushes me. I read a lot of magazines, blogs, and am on sites like Pinterest daily. I feel like I really resonate with stories like Sophia Amoruso’s Girl Boss, I read it in two days and felt so personally connected to how she started, all the sacrifices she made, having her mom help her, and saying “we” when it was just her in the beginning…guilty as charged here for doing it too.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
I think I’d tell myself chin up, it’s only getting better from here, high school is just a small snippet of your life. Oh, and also, you’re never going to use the math you’re worrying over right now! Numbers aren’t my strong suit.
What brought you to California?
Truthfully? I just loved it here. I had only visited California a few times, and San Francisco one time before deciding I had to move here. My parents, of course were in shock when I told them it was what I was going to do, but they agreed and said if you have a job you can give it a shot. Sure enough I found a job at a startup doing events, and was on my way with a U-Haul behind my car a few short months later leaving all my closest friends and family behind in Dallas. I didn’t leave because I didn’t like Dallas, I just felt like there was something more for me waiting in San Francisco, and little did I know that it was Packed Party.
Favorite Sunday Brunch Spot?
Is it cliché to say my favorite meal is brunch? Probably. But I love Zazie’s here in the city, it’s in Cole Valley, and the people that own it are so nice, they recognize me every time I come in (or at least pretend to!). I love southern hospitality and homemade food, so this place combines both.
Favorite type of party to have?
In life? Probably a dinner party. I don’t have them much here in San Francisco because my space is a touch tiny (I call it the Polly Pocket apartment), but definitely a dinner party! Having people over and planning everything from the flowers to the music and place settings is something I learned from my mom and share a love with her over.
What is your current party playlist?
I love music, I always have! I listen to a lot of rap. Kidding. I like a mix of everything though! Mat Kearney is always a go-to for me; his music just feels like home sort of no matter what I’m doing I can throw it on. Listen to “Closer To Love” by him and try not to tap your toe. I’m also really into Broods right now, they’re so young and their music is amazing!
What do you love most about your job?
That’s a really difficult question. There’s nothing I don’t love about it, so I should probably start by saying that. Packed Party doesn’t feel like work because it is truly the most fun thing I’ve ever done. Every day is something different and I love that about it because I’m such a creative person it’s hard for me to do the same thing over and over again. I love laying out the photo shoots, writing the blog, meeting so many new people, and being introduced to new and unique products. I created my dream job for myself, so I can’t say there’s anything I don’t love about it.

The weekend is here and we can't be more excited. After a long week of work, sometimes, all you need is a nice cold adult drink to wash away the stress. Speakeasies are becoming very popular all over California so we wanted to share with you our favorite ones in the Los Angeles area.

The Varnish is located in Downtown LA, tucked away inside one of LA’s oldest restaurants, Cole’s French Dip Sandwiches. It used to be a storage room for the restaurant and then became one of Los Angeles’s original craft cocktail bars. The Varnish was nominated as a James Beard Award Semi Finalist last year. The drink menu varies with usually 5 types of cocktails and a bartender’s choice. The Varnish Originals are a take on classic cocktails, without straying too far. Grab a sandwich at Cole’s and head in and enjoy a crafted cocktail. Just have a little patience, because it’s all a process, but don’t worry, it always delivers. Also, on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays they have Jazz Night after 9pm.

La Descarga known as Hollywood's rum bar, is located in Hollywood near Santa Monica Blvd. and the 101 Freeway. This Cuban themed speakeasy mixes class, elegance and intrigue with Cuban music, libations, and old-fashioned Cuban flare. Upon entering, well-dressed customers are lead up a dark stairway to a hostess who reveals a secret passageway inside. Once through the disguised threshold, guests are immediately transported back in time to pre-Castro Havana. Above the central bar, filled with Havana inspired rum based cocktails, bands play four mini-shows throughout the night and Latin dancers entertain customers. If choosing between 75 different handcrafted rums wasn't special enough, guests can enjoy an in-depth selection of cigars on La Descarga's quaint outside patio.

Blind Barber: Located in Culver City, a Barber Shop is your entrance. Arrive while people get their haircut, and walk into what looks like a storage room. You’ll find yourself in a dark bar where bartenders are mixing all kinds of beautifully crafted cocktails. Not only are you drinking delicious drinks like the Strawberry Fields, which incorporate Vodka, lemon, honey, strawberries and parsley together, but also they have a variety of grilled cheeses. Try a double cream Brie with Parmesan, dates, walnuts, honey and sea salt among many others, or a Nutella, mascarpone, seasonal berries, strawberries and pistachio dessert grilled cheese. Good Times at Davey Waynes: This is the newest of the speakeasy concepts in the heart of Hollywood. Once you see the house, you’ll see a garage. After walking through a garage sale, there is a refrigerator, that you open and it will take you inside the house. A super retro concept with all 70s themed interior decorating, one can get a drink from the bar inside, or venture outside to a bar that is in an Airstream Trailer. BBQ food can be found like “Not” So Dirty Dog which is a bacon wrapped hot dog with avocado lime crema and pico de Also, alcoholic snow cones are a thing for the reminiscent teenager in all of us.

The Red Door: If you ever find yourself in Toluca Lake, find the alley on Riverside Dr. with a red door. There is no signage and this speakeasy style bar is super dark but has black and white TVs with a Latin themed concept and great bartenders. Opened by designer, Tawnya Proctor, NoniLove features local clothing designers and brands - alongside her beautiful hand-crafted jewelry. Established California sat down with Tawnya to talk about what her style and what inspires her most.

Tawyna Procter is a master of many trades. Hair dresser, jewelry maker, boutique buyer, photographer, stylist and over all.. a creative soul. After moving home from Hawaii, she and her mother rebranded their family salon, a few block from the beach in Leucadia, to Noni Salon. She had always had the love for creating things and during her residence in Hawaii, she began making bangles with local shells she would find. Being influenced by her grandmother, who was a jewelry designer, Tawnya would take the seashells she would find while diving and create unique bangles. She originally began NoniLove jewelry to sell in the salon and it soon evolved into different lines. She soon began shipping her pieces to clients all over the world and selling her jewelry in boutiques in California and Hawaii. The style of her jewelry captures the essence of beach life with pearls, shells and unique stones.
How would you describe your own personal style?
I would describe my style as a laid-back Southern California girl with a rock'n roll edge. But I could easily also be a minimalist and wear a great pair of jeans with a staple tee.
How does your style influence what you create for your jewelry line?
Living on the California coast is where I draw most of my inspiration from. I am also inspired by leafs, colors, and the music my parents listened to while I was growing up. We were always listening to Journey, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles.
When finding designers and pieces to sell in the store, what do you look for?
I have worked hard to build relationships with girlfriends who have their own bikini lines in Hawaii. I follow trends and make frequent trips to Los Angeles to find designers I really adore.
When you get dressed in the morning, what do you pick out first? Clothes or jewelry?
Neither! I do my hair then choose my jewelry.
When you are not working how do you spend your free time?
I spend most of my time with my family and friends. Aside from that, I enjoy photography and love getting inspired by things. I love to "create" and I'm always creating something.
What is your biggest creative influence?
My grandpa. He instilled a lot of strong characteristics into me, including the value of a good work ethic. I admire how well he built and created things also. He taught me to keep busy and work hard.
What are some of your sources of inspiration?
I am inspired by the ocean, music and people-watching out the window. I like to build a scene with each model I use for my line and create a story for her. I like to envision that each model I use for my line is the same girl traveling through a different period in her life.

When we first met Cameron, he recently moved back to Los Angeles after spending six months traveling all over Australia - Established California sat down with this singer-songwriter to give you an exclusive performance of "Underneath This Sky".

Sometimes people stumble into your life and you can't really understand why. When I first met Cameron, he recently moved back to Los Angeles after spending six months traveling all over Australia - hired by Virgin Australia, for a campaign called "The Best Jobs in the World" (read more about his experience here)
We got to chatting and Cameron mentioned he was off to play a show in Hollywood that evening and extended an invitation. I had other plans, so I politely declined - but we exchanged information and I promised to listen to his music. And listen i did. I loved his singer-songwriter sound and I knew I wanted to share him with you all. I was able to sit down with Cameron to discuss more about his music, what brought him to California and an exclusive performance of "Underneath this Sky" for Established California.
Tell Us A Little About Yourself! Where are you from? What brought you to California?
I'm a small town boy from Kansas. I left my roots upon graduating high school and went to college at USC to study theater and communication. After graduating as a Trojan, I moved to Dallas to live at home for a bit and pursue my music (my parents had moved while I was away at school). Now I'm back in good ol' sunny California!
Do you have any musicians or bands that have been a big influence for you as an artist?
In high school, I was really influenced by Aussie singer-songwriter Missy Higgins, and to this day, her music still inspires me. I've always loved The Fray as well. I'm really a fan of any singer-songwriter who writes and sings honestly from the heart. It's my goal right now to dig back and listen to some older singer-songwriters and see how that influences my music.
Where’s your ideal place to write music?
Well, I grew up writing on my piano at my parents house, and pretty much all of my songs until recently have been written there. That piano room definitely feels like home to me. Although, now that I'm living out here, I'm curious to explore some other good places to write. If I could take a piano to the beach, that might be the perfect spot.
If you could tour with any musician (dead or alive) who would you want to tour with?
Coldplay puts on some pretty epic shows, and I can only imagine what it would be like to be on that tour. Although I'd love to jump on with some more indie acts like Missy or The Lumineers.
How was it having the “Best Job in the World?”
Landing The Best Job in the World with Virgin Australia still feels like a dream. My life was unbelievable insanity for six months straight in the land down under. I flew on around 55 flights to over 40 different cities and saw many parts of the country that even Australians haven't seen. I went skydiving, swam with sea lions, camped in the outback, rode camels along the beach...it was all pretty magical, and I'm so thankful to have gotten the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience it. Definitely something I'll be sharing with my grandkids someday.
If you could do it again, where would you want to travel to?
It's pretty difficult to top Australia, but I think if I could do another crazy trip, I would travel to the top 50 beaches in the world (including the resorts on them -- ha, why not?). Sounds like a pretty tough job to me.

We're exploring Milkfarm, an newly opened artisan cheese shop in Eagle Rock, California. They carry over a hundred different cheeses from a variety of countries - and if you are anything like us, you love a good wine & cheese shop.
I’m not sure if anyone loves cheese as much as I do but it’s pretty out of control. With that being said, I was extremely excited to check out Milkfarm, an artisan cheese shop in Eagle Rock, near Glendale. They carry over a hundred different cheeses from a variety of countries. The cheeses are on a rotation depending on season and availability. The owner, Leah Park Fierro, is a pastry chef - made cheese monger - who has worked over 15 years in the food industry.
Once you walk in, the setting is very bright and rustic. One can come in for lunch and order charcuterie or sandwiches that change every day. The one sandwich that you can always count on being there is their Grilled Cheese. It was rich, gooey and full of flavor. For charcuterie, options include prosciutto, jamon, porchetta, pates, sausages and other meats.
If you don’t have time to eat there, grab a wine, or seasonal jam, bread, cheese and take it to go. Another option is their Picnic Box. For $30, they sell ready-to-go picnic boxes, which include two pieces of cheese, salami, olives, cornichons, seasonal fresh fruit or grapes and a half baguette. Perfect for that picnic on the beach or a day in the park.
Not only is Milkfarm LA a cheese shop, you can find an abundance of flat breads, baked pretzels, pies and tarts. So, if you’re in that area, and it’s nice out, consider picking up a picnic box and head outside to enjoy this amazing September weather. Need some inspiration? San Diego's specific love for craft beer has birthed breweries such as Stone and Ballast Point. Now it's time for the Coastal North County to make its mark. Oceanside residents have been enthusiastically waiting for Jeff and Dande Bagby to open Bagby Beer Company since they purchased the site in late 2012. Bagby's plans to open a brewery with a delicious menu have now become a reality. They feature gluten free options, a private event space, an ocean view balcony patio, a full pizza oven, family and pet friendly. Having only been open for a week, judging by the full bar and many servers delivering delicious items, Bagby Beer Co. seems to be here to stay!

Four women bring their California roots, creative eye and a passion for storytelling to their latest digital venture - a website called Established California. With Palm Springs being the backdrop for their weekend adventure, they delve into the lives of the website’s founders and what "Established California" is really about.
Leave it to the ladies of Established California to choose Palm Springs as their first team building retreat destination. With it's stunning desert scenery, 350 days of sunshine and a convivial “village atmosphere that has been preserved…” (Visit Palm Springs), this quintessential California getaway entices visitors alike: to seek adventure, ignore the presence of time and always have ‘Fun in the Sun’ and beyond.
The sun has gone down, but the night is young, when I first meet Nicole, Lindsay, Megan and Eleni. Their mid-century vacation home is nothing short of fabulous and pristine. I’m immediately greeted with laughter and a cocktail. By the calmness in the air, you wouldn’t have the faintest clue they're just settling in after spending five long hours in the car (due to Labor Day traffic) or that they are on the brink of their biggest adventure yet, looming 72 hours away…The official launch of Established California.

Barefoot and all smiles, the only thing on their mind is what’s on the menu? Lindsay with a big grin says, “I’m starving” and volunteers Nicole to prepare her favorite: heirloom tomato and burrata cheese salad for dinner. It’s obvious they’re sisters with their playful, but demanding, banter. Megan and Eleni chuckle at the bickering, when Megan suddenly asks, “Eleni… is that what we sound like?” Eleni smirks at her sorority sister/college roommate and without skipping a beat replies, “Absolutely.”
With satisfied stomachs and refilled beverages, team building is in full swing. The ebb and flow of creative energy is infectious. The best way to describe their dynamic is like a verbal Pinterest board. From their newest fashion finds to sharing photographs taken on a recent adventures, the conversation is always bouncing off one person to the next. They embrace each other’s voices. It’s humbling to see a powerful team of strong creative women working together for a common goal. Although, tomorrow will bring a jam-packed day, they're burning the midnight oil.

Dawn is barely peaking its head over the gorgeous mountaintop, as if it's mocking me, as I sip my espresso so I can begin to function. Yet, our ladies are ready [in full hair and make up]; prepared to shoot promotional head shots for their homepage. Having spent the last six months developing the website, it’s finally "Go Time". As Lindsay talks with Megan about a few different camera looks, Eleni and Nicole chat at the breakfast table about what’s in store for the day post-photoshoot. It appears to be just another day for the ladies of Established California.
The website is clearly a direct extension of the founding ladies’ vision of life. Lindsay gushes that, “Established California is an interactive platform for the curious to explore and share their version of the California experience; The personal pursuit of the Golden State of Mind”. Eleni goes on to say, “For us, it is not about being California tastemakers but rather creating a diverse, accepting, creative community.” Hearing this, I can see how their content will celebrate and share all things we all find, explore and love in the Golden State - enabling us the opportunity to experience it together. Everyone has the ability to have a little California Sunshine in their lives.

After wrapping the photoshoot and a handful of creative meetings, the team demands that it's time to enjoy some in the city. Trying to beat the heat, but failing as it’s already 105 degrees… they head out to explore Palm Springs and shed light on some uncharted destination spots. “Each of us see life differently... and it is our innate gift. One person's 'California' story will never be the same as another.” explains Megan in the front seat. “It’s through our conversations, the snapshots we capture and the way we each express our love for this lifestyle that writes a journey that is exclusive to each of us, individually. It would be a shame to not share that and ask for others to share their versions as well” Nicole chimes in.
As we arrive into Downtown Palm Springs, we finally settle in for some Authentic Mexican Cuisine at Las Casuelas (in true California fashion). With the success of their day and a few rounds of Margaritas {Vodka soda for Megan}, I start to discover the children at heart behind these business women sitting at the table.
You can learn a lot about a person over the course of a weekend, like what makes them tick - or what their childhood ambitions were. Lindsay had an infatuation with all things Jack Dawson from James Cameron's "Titanic". At the age of twelve, she produced and distributed a monthly "Titanic" themed newsletter to over 500 people. Megan, since the age of five, had the same unfading childhood dream to host a talk show. Nicole, in the infancy of her career, found herself based primarily in New York for two years. She woke up one day and decided to get the outline of the State of California tattooed on her wrist as a rebellious reminder of where her heart resides. While Eleni, obsessed with fashion trends, would compile Polaroid look-books to share with her closest of friends. It’s apparent that these ladies, who all have similar yet unique destinies, were imprinted at a young age for this venture they had in front of them. I can't help put admire the unique connection between what they have done traditionally and this new venture has in store for them.

Another morning of grogginess was upon me, with a shot of bittersweet nostalgia; the women of Established California have reminded me of home. Although we have to say our goodbyes shortly, the impression they left on my heart has been matched by my excitement of their new launch and how they will imprint the world. Their zest for life {and the backdrop of Palm Springs} has made this storybook trip absolutely perfect. As I enjoy our time together, the reaction I’m feeling from the weekend can only be described as inspired. Like them, I want to embark on a journey of my own.. wildly and inventive terms; thus I am Established California.

I look to see what kind of art is on the walls, who is in that picture frame, how the table is set, what is the underlying color scheme. I tell you, attention to detail is never wasted on this houseguest! I love rooms that tell a story and show the personality of the people living there. I first spotted Amour Vert, the San Francisco based brand in a small boutique on Main Street in Half Moon Bay called Crow’s Nest. Obsessed with the chic designs and innovative fabrics, I knew this was a label to commit to memory.
Amour Vert (French for "green love") is the perfect union of eco-conscious fashion. With a husband and wife duo, Linda Balti (Creative Director) and Christoph Frehsee (CEO), they are not your typical design team story.
Balti developed fighter jet simulators as an engineer and Frehsee built a machine that cleared landmines safely. So, how do the two most unlikely people end up with a fashion line? Balti read an article that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world, falling second to big oil production. This led to her decision to consume fashion more mindfully in a non-harmful way to environment. Unable to find eco lines that soothed her Parisian taste, in 2009 Amour Vert was launched and became the line where “Paris chic meets Cali cool”.

Not willing to sacrifice sustainability, Amour Vert “employs a zero waste design philosophy”. Their use of organic and recycled fabrics, vegetable and non-synthetic dyes along with local garment production in Bay Area crowns Amour Vert’s statement of promoting eco-conscious fashion. As a true pioneer for the continued evolution of eco fashion, Balti was recently announced as one of the 30 new members of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). With Amour Vert on a big upswing we are bound to see many more incredible things out of this brand.

It was a beautiful Sunday night in May when I had just walked out of a movie theater located on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Third Street is home to many different shops and restaurants but more frequently, I’ve been seeing musicians gather there to busk and play their preferred instruments. Growing up in Los Angeles, I’ve been to Third Street many times and usually walked by and laughed at the strange performance artists that perform on the busy street – anything from K-Pop Break Dancers to 60-year-old Opera singers. It was never a place in my mind to discover musicians. Well, until this night.
As i continued to walk to my car, I heard a young female vocalist with a full sounding acoustic guitar. She had just finished her song and I paused in the street because I wanted to hear her next song. She began to sing and I thought to myself, “Wow, she has a great sound.” but then continued to walk to my car. Until I heard her begin the chorus.
Few people practice and play percussion with their guitars. It’s a fun way of using the body and strings of the guitar as a percussion instrument as you tap and hit the guitar in different places creating fun and new sounds. Whenever I hear it, I get really excited and this young female musician was killing it on the streets of Santa Monica.
I turned around and listened to her finish her song and took down her information. I had to talk with her and share her music with you all. Enjoy!

I had a chance to sit down with Lisa Haagen and talk a little more with her and her story. Here’s what she had to say:
Why California? What about this state drew you to it?
The draw was all very much interlaced with my decision to pursue music as a career. There was a couple of layers to the decision to move to California, but the core of it was that I have always been a really content person- I loved my home town and never felt any need to leave. Santa Monica however worked it’s way into my mind and the persistence of it stuck with me and I thought I should listen to that. I had been to California a number of times in my youth, but I had never spent a significant amount of time here.
Do you have any musicians or bands that have been a big influence for you as an artist?
I grew up listening to a really broad range of music, and I think that the spectrum had more of an effect than any specific artist on my style. I always was drawn to lyrics, and really love artists that can be silly and serious at the same time- like Regina Spektor and Ingrid Michaelson. The thing that got me started writing however was definitely the people I was around…the everyday life of those close to me. Even now they are who I look to for inspiration.
What was the first instrument you learned to play? How old were you? Do you have a favorite?
This answer gets complicated. I started piano lessons when I was 3, drum lessons at 4, and guitar lessons at 5. At the time, I was much more interested in sports so I definitely didn’t take full advantage of the cool opportunity that it was. My siblings were much better at capitalizing on it at the time. Even though the technical aspects didn’t stick I do think it helped me develop a good ear for music. When band started in school I transitioned to the bass guitar and continued to play the drumset for jazz band through the end of high school. When I was 17 I brought an electric guitar with me to college with the intent to learn it, and found myself being completely sucked in by songwriting. One of my buddies had an acoustic guitar that they lent me for a while and that marked the point where I got really into it. I was messing around on the piano a bit during that time frame as well, and have recently started writing a little more evenly across the two. I can’t say I prefer one- guitar has definitely had the biggest effect on my songwriting, especially as I’m getting more into the percussive styling. I’ve really enjoyed getting a chance to continue with all of them in arranging my songs, but playing live with a band I tend to stick with the acoustic guitar and have other musicians play the additional parts with me. Because of that, I really love playing with other musicians as well because I get a chance to jump on the other instruments live. For instance, I am about to do a west coast tour with another singer-songwriter and we are providing backing support for each-others sets- in this case I get to play percussion and I’m really looking forward to it.
If you could tour with any musician (dead or alive) who would you want to tour with?
Oy. Ben Howard, Andrew McMahon, Mat Kearney, Sara Barielles, Brandi Carlile…… there are so many!
What kind of advice would you give to other musicians that want to come to California to pursue their dreams?
I don’t know that my advice is specific to California – but I think I’d just say wherever you are at, try to play in front of people as often as possible. It helps you hone your craft – live audiences help you figure out what works and what doesn’t. Failure is a huge part of artist growth. You can’t be afraid of it – now is the time to get that all out before anyone knows who you are. Playing live often also lets you form a lot of good connections. One of the best things you can do is be around other musicians because those are people that you can learn from and also the people you will be building shows with.
