Mary Wiggins is a Register Yoga Teacher and Licensed Masseuse who has been teaching (and loving it!) since April of 2012. Although her lust for “Madonna arms” is what initially drew her to yoga, the mind/body connection is what has made her a lifelong fan.
Originally hailing from the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, Mary now calls Southern California "Home" and is loving every moment of it. A self-proclaimed full-blown yoga nerd and Established California's newest Health Contributor! So here we are, giving you a closer look of who she is. We are positive you'll fall in love with her, just like we have!
What was the moment that you fell in love with yoga?
I fell in love with yoga in an open air bamboo floored yoga shala in the middle of the rain forest of Costa Rica. That picturesque setting wasn't the reason though. After a class there one day, I remember feeling this overwhelming sense of gratitude, ease and comfort in my own skin that I had never experienced before. It was a full blown yoga buzz and I thought, "Yep, this yoga thing is for me!"
What keeps you inspired?
A lot of my inspiration comes from other people. Nothing inspires me more than seeing other folks on fire for life, rocking their truth and shining bright!
What do you do when you aren’t teaching?
When I'm not teaching, I'm usually yoga-ing somewhere, hiking with my dog, Rosco, reading/writing at the beach, or plotting my next yoga adventure or retreat!
What do you wish more people would realize about yoga?
You don't have to be "flexible" to come to yoga! I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say "I'm not flexible enough for yoga." Yoga is about working with what you have ("flexible" or not), and what you have is perfect.
What’s your healthiest daily habit?
My healthiest habit is probably stretching. Even if I'm not able to do an entire class, I almost always stretch. I'm in my car a ton cruising from studios to clients, so staying stretched is crucial for me.
What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
My teenage years were rough, just like a lot of people's were. I used to shy away from things when they got tough, so I'd probably tell my 16 year old self not to give up on things so easily. PERSEVERE!
"I AM WHOLE." I use it whenever I start to play the "I'll be happy when ______" game. It reminds me that I have everything I need, and that I am perfectly imperfect in this moment as I am, wherever I am.
What’s on your current Yoga playlist?
My musical taste is all over the map, so my playlists tend to reflect that. You can expect anything from hip hop to classic rock and anything in between. Playing yoga DJ is one of my favorite parts of teaching!
Favorite yoga wear?
Right now I'm rocking a "Healthy is the new Skinny" tank and Onzie pants. My affirmats "I am Grateful" yoga mat is always with me too. It's the perfect reminder to keep gratitude in my heart when I practice.
What advice would you give to someone seeking balance in their life?
Oh man... Balance is forever a work in progress in my world! I constantly have to check myself to make sure I'm getting the right doses of work & play, family & friends, and goal crushing & down time. It's helpful for me to sit down and get honest with myself about my priorities, and to figure out what I need to do to reach my goals.
What brought you to California?
My first trip to California was in 2009 to be in my best friend's Malibu wedding (swoon). I fell for it hard! A year later I moved here to complete a yoga teacher training and to immerse myself in the yoga mecca that is Los Angles! That was 4.5 years ago and counting. Good luck getting rid of me now, California!
What’s your favorite part about living in California?
The obvious reasons aside (perfect year-round weather, the ocean, the mountains etc), my favorite part of living here is the momentum and the energy of like-minded people that pulses through California, and specifically LA. It's not cheap or easy to live here, so people come here with a purpose. Whatever their profession/passion is, they're usually on fire about it and it's a fire you can feel! It truly motivates me, keeps me on my toes, and keeps me inspired.
Favorite Sunday Brunch spot?
Brunch go-to hands down is Venice Beach Alehouse! Delicious food & drinks (healthy & naughty), ocean front view, and the occasional appearance of Tree man! What more could you want?!
