I’m a sucker for an acoustic guitar.
I am.
So when Once came out in the theater back in 2004, I convinced a friend of mine to go to the movie theater to watch it with me. I had seen a preview of the movie and knew in a millesecond that it was a movie I had to see. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with acoustic and folk music. The art of songwriting and expressing feelings through music was beyond me. I daydreamed about one day living a life that revolved around creating music. However, a few years ago I came to terms with the fact that I would never become a creator of music but I will absolutely be an appreciator of it.
Once, sets its’ stage in Ireland. It opens with a lone busker on the streets of Dublin, singing his heart out about loss and heartache. The main guy (who remains unnamed) is fed up with music and stripped of any desire to continue his music aspirations. Enter “Girl”. Girl is from the Czech Republic and is living in Ireland and needs her vacuum visted (which Guy happens to fix vacuums). The two end up in a whirlpool of music, love, life and adventures.
The entirety of the movie leaves you wondering will they fall in love or won’t they? I won’t be one to spoil the story but I suggest you go watch the movie (or see the show ASAP).
Well, when I heard that they decided to make Once into a Broadway musical, I was skeptical. How can anyone achieve the goosebump that I felt when Glen Hansard opened with “Say To Me Now” in the movie?!
My mom was the one who contacted me via Facebook (my mom is so tech-savy – ya, I’m gonna brag for a minute) and was the one who initially bought tickets at the Pantages Theatre. The Pantages Theatre alone is one of the most beautiful venues in the world. Broadway shows are streaming through the place year after year. Once owned by Howard Hughes (yes, really) and home of the Academy Awards for ten years (yes, really) – this glittery and beautiful stage is the perfect place for a live performace show.
My overall take: nothing will ever top the movie. (but they ALMOST did it)
Go see it!
